Abstract

Problem

This project aims to improve patient satisfaction for vulnerable population patients while in hospital, namely transgender and gender non-conforming people. A major roadblock for this population in seeking medical care is their fear of discrimination when accessing healthcare, resulting in a delay, or avoidance of medical care. Multiple studies agree there is a need for nursing education on cultural competence to improve care and satisfaction for vulnerable populations.

Poverty is a multi-faceted global problem. Nurses and providers are front-line caregivers for this vulnerable population. In order to provide effective care, individuals must understand their own attitudes towards poverty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for changes in Practical Nursing students’ attitudes towards poverty with the use of a poverty simulation based upon the Experiential Learning Theory. Participants were surveyed using the Short Form Attitudes towards Poverty (SFATP) tool. Impressions Of Participants In A Chemical Mass Casualty Exercise, Ethan J. Start, Joan M. Culley, Abbas Tavakoli

A mass casualty exercise was performed to investigate triage and decontamination of patients exposed to an irritant gas. Nursing students participated in two groups: emergency department triage (ED) and decontamination (DECON). While participants felt overall that the experience was valuable, DECON participants had a greater interest in emergency response and were more likely to volunteer again.
