Indonesia’S Trade Diplomacy Through Fta: Analysis On Actors, Processes, And Goals Of Diplomacy, Pantri Muthriana Erza Killian
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The purpose of this article is to examine the various FTAs that Indonesia has been involved in within the last 15 years by looking at the three core elements of trade diplomacy: actors, processes, and goals of FTAs. Based on these elements, this research finds that Indonesia’s FTA diplomacy tends to be dominated by foreign policy interests compared to economic ones, which can be observed through several elements. First, Indonesia’s FTA diplomacy is dominated by state actors and foreign policy players with little involvement from economic players and non-state actors. The numerous FTAs signed through ASEAN also reinforced this domination …

The Moderation Of Frente Farabundo Martí Para La Liberación Nacional’S Economic Orientation In El Salvador, 2009-2019, Petrus Putut Pradhopo Wening
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
Frente Farabundo Martí Para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) was a Marxist guerrilla group, known for its activities in the 1980s and 1990s to seize El Salvador’s government through war. Post-peace accords, FMLN transformed into an electoral political party and successfully won to lead the government of El Salvador in 2009-2019, but then they compromised their economic policies to suit neoliberalism. This article uses Gill and Law’s conceptualisation of the theory of direct and structural power of capital to explain the causes of FMLN’s neoliberalism-compromising economic policy adjustment in 2009-2019. This article finds that El Salvador’s social and political-economy historical dynamics, …

Indonesia's Involvement In The Afghanistan Peacebuilding Process, Fabian Nur Farizan, Dudy Heryadi
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Lederach’s pyramid model identifies three approaches to peacebuilding, along with the main actors in the population affected by the conflict—namely top leadership, middle range leadership, and grass-root leadership. The Influence Of Information Power Upon The Great Game In Cyberspace: U.S. Wins Over Russian Meddling In The 2018 Elections, Joseph H. Schafer
Military Cyber Affairs
The 2018 U.S. pivot in information and cyberspace degraded Russian operations in the 2018 election. Following pervasive Russian information power operations during the U.S. 2016 elections, the United States progressed from a policy of preparations and defense in information and cyberspace to a policy of forward engagement. U.S recognition of renewed great power competition coupled with Russia’s inability to compete diplomatically, militarily (conventionally), or economically, inspires Russia to continues to concentrate on information power operations. This great game in cyberspace was virtually uncontested by the U.S. prior to 2017. Widespread awareness of Russian aggression in 2016 served as a catalyst …

Who Upholds Your Human Rights When You Are “Stateless?” Why Couldn’T The Un Protect The Rohingya’S Human Rights?, Hyochan Lee
Student Theses and Dissertations
In 2017, genocide in Myanmar took place against the stateless minority Rohingya Muslims. Why couldn’t the UN protect the Rohingya’s human rights? The international community's efforts to oppose these violations against the stateless people have been only passive. Then, who upholds your human rights when you are stateless? Using chronology, historical institutionalism, and process tracing analyses, this thesis (1) evaluates the UN’s legal regime’s systemic design and capabilities in protecting human rights; then (2) identifies the design flaws of our international human rights regime; and lastly, (3) develops a recommendation to protect all people, stateless or not. Based on both …
Las Implicaciones De La Migración Transnacional Entre Estados Unidos / México Para El Desarrollo Profesional De Los Docentes: Perspectivas Antropológicas // The Implications Of Us/Mexico Transnational Migration For Teacher Professional Development: Anthropological Perspectives, Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Against Nature: Imperial Law And Homosexuality In India, Juliano Estrada Donatelli
Against Nature: Imperial Law And Homosexuality In India, Juliano Estrada Donatelli
Outstanding Student Work in Asian Studies
In this essay, I will explore India’s Section 377, as a case study, to analyze the effect and legacy imperialism has had within former colonial territories, such as India. In order to do so, I will draw from literary sources to first characterize male homosexual relationships within India during pre-imperial rule. Then I will transition into the second part of the essay, in which I will discuss the motivation and inception of Section 377 under British ruling; to this section, I will also be contrasting the more official imperial mandates with the histories of European writers and travelers who, upon …
Soft Power And Human Development In Central Asia, Cheryl White
Soft Power And Human Development In Central Asia, Cheryl White
Honors Theses
Due to the wealth of natural resources and the strategic geographic location of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, these two countries have attracted a significant amount of soft power investments, including foreign direct investment, non-government organizations, and infrastructure development. This paper compares the fluctuations in the soft power measurements to the levels of human development in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The findings show highly similar changes in the amount soft power investments to the level of human development indicators, suggesting a strong correlation between the two measures. A methodological analysis and further data sets would be necessary to determine the connection though.

Argentina’s new non-binary ID cards (DNI in Spanish) were highly celebrated when they were announced in July 2021 via a presidential decree. Government agencies had until November 18th to update systems and databases to include the new gender marker “X.” But that didn’t happen, so those with the non-binary DNI are unable to access essential services. The Argentine government cited the national 2012 Gender Identity Law, which guarantees a DNI that fully reflects a citizen’s gender identity, as the basis for the measure. However, for many in the trans*, non-binary and gender non-conforming community, the decree was unnecessary to enforce …

Many asylum seekers, or foreign nationals who have been confirmed to have a credible fear of persecution in their home countries, regardless of how they enter the United States, are placed into Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers. Two avenues for the release of detainees while they wait for their asylum cases to be heard by an immigration judge are bond and parole applications, the basis …

The Yakuza: Organized Crime In Japan, Darlene N. Moorman
The Downtown Review
Examining organized crime groups should not be purely economic; in other words, the culture, social structure, political contexts, and so on, are also critical in an insightful analysis of any organized crime group. For this paper, the Japanese yakuza are considered both in an economic viewpoint, such as how they make money, but also in other areas, such as its syndicates' notable cultural contributions and specific social characteristics. Moreover, this paper explores the dynamic changing of the organization overtime, especially in regards to its shifting relationship with the Japanese government.

Am I My Brother’S Keeper? : Local And Global Responsibility In The Digital Age, David Gethings
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
What is our responsibility towards others, both locally and globally, particularly as it relates to human rights? In a world connected by ever-advancing communications technology and social media, the question of responsibility takes on a greater significance when individuals have the capacity to be better informed than at any previous time in history. The digital age connects people from around the globe, fostering greater awareness about global issues and creating personal connections, which builds understanding and empathy. Traditionally, domestic responsibility has centered on civic engagement, such as being active politically and in the community. International responsibility has largely remained the …

Failure To Protect: Why The International Community Will Fail To Respond To The Cultural Genocide Of Turkish Cypriot People, Hilmi Ulas
Peace Studies Faculty Articles and Research
The international community has time and again committed to never let genocide occur again – however, multiple bouts of genocide have occurred since the Holocaust. This, in addition to the current quandaries surrounding the Uyghurs of China, points to the fact that the international laws and institutions have loopholes that allow for genocides – especially those that enact structural and cultural violence without necessarily employing direct violence – to ‘slip through’.
This has been the case in spite of R2P policies being in place. In this paper, I examine the inability of international systems to capture ‘cultural genocide’ or intervene …

Watch Me If You Can! Un Cinéma Algérien En Quête De Diffusion Et De Réception, Salima Tenfiche
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
After a civil war that left more than 200 000 dead in Algeria in the 1990s, the return to peace in 2003 and the rise in the price of oil allowed Algerian cinema to return to the international scene. The state has invested several billion Algerian dinars since 2005 to revive film production and start renovating the country's four hundred movie theaters that had been abandoned since the late 1980s. Today, fifty-three movie theaters are functional throughout Algeria, yet they do not open their doors to the public. These movie theaters are still perceived as shady places, and they struggle …

Travelling by cart, but more often by train and later by automobile, films reached small towns and large villages alike. Travelling pictures were the first - and often the only - means of access to cinema for much of the African continent. They made it possible to reach the countryside, albeit randomly and sporadically.
To analyse the development of travelling pictures during the late colonial period, this article emphasises commercial, for-profit ventures rather than official, government-sponsored tours playing educational and propaganda films - though the line between the two was often blurred. Whether they functioned autonomously or were tied to …

La Distribution En France Des Films D'Afrique Sud Saharienne Francophone, Patricia Caillé, Claude Forest
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Since the first such productions of the post-independence era, films directed by African filmmakers from former sub-Saharan French colonies have enjoyed very limited broadcast in theatres in France. Indeed, with very few exceptions, they have hardly been seen by French audiences at all. The image of the "festival film" - a label they were assigned - has had a significant negative impact, reinforcing their status as niche films reserved exclusively for film buffs. The few film titles that come up over and over again have led critics astray, restricting their view of this cinema to the places and stories portrayed …

Compared to other African countries and despite the potential size of its audience, until the beginning of the new millennium, Congo DRC seemed to be lagging behind in its local film production. Guido Convents' work on Congolese cinema from the earliest times to the present shows a portrait of cinematography around the Congo, which takes into account cinema "for Congolese, by Congolese or with Congolese actors" for lack of an indigenous productive centrality, if not limited to feature films directed by Mwezé Ngangura and recognized authors of the diaspora (Balufu Bakupa Kanyinda, among others). With the success of the feature …

Objective: This research examines how Cuban immigrants experience cope and adapt to the United States. Cuban immigration is associated with specific stressors related to the immigration experience and the necessary process of acculturation and assimilation. These major stressors can result in mental health concerns among Cuban immigrants; however, no studies have examined how acculturation may influence Cuban immigrants’ coping skills and resultant mental health concerns. This unique study is the first to examine the coping skills Cuban immigrants use during acculturation and the effects of these skills on Cuban immigrants’ mental health. Methods: Seventeen participants completed a semistructured interview and …
The Use Of Similar Fact In Criminal Proceedings: An Updated Framework, Siyuan Chen
The Use Of Similar Fact In Criminal Proceedings: An Updated Framework, Siyuan Chen
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
When confronted with the question of whether to admit similiar fact for criminal cases, courts in Singapore are often faced with balancing potentially competing norms in the form of evidential expediency and fairness to the accused. Specifically, although similiar fact may help establish the ingredients of an offence, there existis a real risk that any resulting conviction of the accused and this potential weakness in inferential reasoning through indirect proof will - to use the word in its broadest sense - predjudice the accused.
