Ian Bremmer's book Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism focuses on the discontents of globalization and draws a link between economic insecurity and tides of political polarization that have swept across states, splintering segments of the population and leaving deep social fractures in their wake. In this review essay, I expand on Bremmer’s argument by incorporating two other recent works of global political economy that shed light on the current state of globalization, The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy by Dani Rodrik and Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity by William Robinson. In this article I discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has led to the overall decline of globalization in its current form. I discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the shortcomings of globalization in its current form that proves it to be unsustainable in the long term. In addition, I discuss new ideas for what a new form of globalization would look like that would be more stable and prosperous, along with being better able to manage global crises such as the current pandemic.

“Diplomacy, in order for it to be successful, depends heavily on communication. Traditionally, we think of that communication as taking place through the means of spoken language. When applied correctly, language can protect against an outbreak of war, yet when it fails, language may also launch it. Similarly, throughout history, music has operated alongside spoken language as a means of both conducting and preventing conflict. In this thesis, I explore whether war, diplomacy, and music have shared an inextricable link throughout the past centuries, and if so, how the link has expanded and evolved into modern day soft-diplomacy. The Human Development And Capabilities Approach As A Twenty-First Century Ideology Of Globalization, Devin K. Joshi

While many scholars have analysed neo-liberalism (i.e. market globalism) as an ideology of globalization, much less is known about alternative and emerging ideologies that challenge neoliberalism on a global scale. Addressing this gap, I critically examine the ‘human development and capabilities approach’ (HDCA) as a counter-ideology to neoliberalism promoted by the United Nations. Applying morphological discourse analysis and incorporating critical insights from recent work by Manfred Steger and Paul James, this study demonstrates how the HDCA (i.e. capabilities globalism) functions as a well-developed ideology steeped in a global imaginary.
