The Gift Of The Gods: The Impact Of The Korean War On Japan, John P. Bowen Aug 1984

The Gift Of The Gods: The Impact Of The Korean War On Japan, John P. Bowen

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The Korean War was a benchmark in the modern history of Japan. It became a catalyst for political action, and the fountainhead of the "economic miracle" that raised Japan once again to a prominent position among nations. The Korean War helped solve many political problems, including the tricky question of a peace treaty. It confirmed Japan's commitment to a no-war constitution. It also permitted the Japanese government to relax the restrictions imposed by occupation authorities. The war created a fortuitous economic stimulus that permitted Japan to emerge from the recessionary period that followed World War II and to establish the …

The U.S. In Central America And The Caribbean, Michael J. Kryzanek Mar 1984

The U.S. In Central America And The Caribbean, Michael J. Kryzanek

Bridgewater Review

The revolution in Central America has not only helped most Americans learn where El Salvador and Nicaragua are situated on the map, but, more importantly, it has placed before them two opposing interpretations of what is actually going on in that part of the world. By the Reagan Administration, the American public is told that the fighting in this region is a result of communist expansionism. The Salvadoran rebels, in concert with the Nicaraguans and the Cubans, are seeking to spread their influence and establish Marxist satellite states. Those who disagree with the Reagan position claim that the outbreak of …

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1984

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Not since the 1930s have I been as concerned for the short term future of American agriculture as I am now. Last year's net farm income is estimated at only about $15.5 billion. In the aggregate, and in real term, that is the lowest it has been in decades. Fortunately, on a per capita or per farm basis the numbers are less depressing and, fortunately, they will begin to trend upward again in 1984. But it looks as if export tonnages will decline for the fourth year in a row, and farm land values may also decline for the fourth …

"Stock Index Futures At The Merc", Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO ADDRESS THIS GROUP. LAST YEAR, WHEN I TALKED TO YOU AT THE SCIA ANNUAL MEETING IN BURGENSTOCK, I TOLD YOU OF THE DYNAMIC GROWTH THE FUTURES INDUSTRY WAS UNDERGOING. I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT THAT GROWTH CONTINUED IN 1983. THE CHICAGO MERCANTILE EXCHANGE HAD ITS SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE RECORD-BREAKING YEAR, TOPPING 1982 TRADING VOLUME BY MORE THAN 13 PER CENT. SINCE 1972 WE HAVE SEEN OUR ANNUAL VOLUME GROW FROM 4.5 MILLION CONTRACTS TO 38.1 MILLION CONTRACTS--A TRULY PHENOMENAL RECORD!

The Palestinian Right To Self-Determination And Statehood, Beth Holland Jan 1984

The Palestinian Right To Self-Determination And Statehood, Beth Holland

Honors Theses

Israel and the United States believe that the Israelis have the right to exist as a nation and that the Palestinians do not have this right. The Palestinians believe that Israel, with the help of the United States, has usurped their land, and that they, the Palestinians, have the right to self-determination and statehood.

Who, then, is right, and who is wrong? The writer of this paper believes that Israel's right to statehood has been used to justify the suffering of the Palestinians. When right is used to sanction another's misery, it becomes wrong. Therefore, hoping that she may strengthen …
