The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) realized many years ago that it would take skilled, qualified leaders in oncology nursing to sustain the specialty of oncology care for years to come. With the nursing shortage and shortage in leadership, it is imperative to examine the impact of attending a leadership program on the future of oncology nursing. Registered Nurses comprise the largest group of healthcare professionals in the United States, and forecasts predict a nursing shortage of epic proportions on the horizon. Significant factors include approaching retirement of Baby Boomer RNs, increased demand for care for aging Baby Boomers in the population, approaching retirement of nurse educators, and rejection of qualified applicants secondary to enrollment restrictions in nursing programs. Nursing student attrition further contributes to the pending shortage. Successful retention programs promote best-practice utilization of scarce resources. Previous researchers have reported that societal definitions of masculinity may act as a barrier to men entering the nursing profession, and that men who do enter nursing may hold a different view of masculinity. The purpose of this study was to describe the meaning of masculinity for recent male baccalaureate nursing program graduates. Whether they are naturally occurring, caused by environmental forces, or generated by humans, disasters have placed extraordinary stresses on society. Following September 11, 2001, the Department of Homeland Security was created to protect the nation and coordinate responses to future emergencies at the federal, state, and local levels. However, Governmental agencies can’t handle all aspects of mass casualty events.
