Prior to 2009, South Texas was essentially an archaeological tabula rasa, largely unknown in the academic, public, or grey literature due to its location far from research universities, the state historic preservation office, and cultural resource management firms. Here, we relate how a consortium of anthropologists and archaeologists, biologists, historians, geologists, and geoarchaeologists have embraced a locally focused, place-based STEAM research approach to tell the story of a largely unknown region of the United States and make it accessible to K–17 educators,¹ the public, and scholars with bilingual maps, books, exhibits, films, traveling trunks, and scholarly publications. The City of San Antonio (COSA) Public Works Department retained Pape-Dawson Engineers, Inc. to conduct cultural resource investigations for proposed road improvements along Mission Road and Acequia Road (i.e., the Project) within San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The Project consists of the installation of brick pavers and continuous illumination assemblies, electrical service, and underground infrastructure along both sides of Mission Road from SE Military Drive to the San Antonio River and along Acequia Road from Mission Road to Ashley Road. On behalf of Southwest Independent School District (SWISD), Pape-Dawson Engineers, Inc. (Pape-Dawson) conducted an archaeological survey for the proposed SWISD Natatorium Project (Project) in southwestern San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. SWISD proposes to develop one of three plans for the natatorium complex on an approximately 2-hectare (5-acre) tract of land (Project Area).

The Project Area is located within the City of San Antonio’s (COSA) jurisdictional boundary, necessitating compliance with the Historic Preservation and Urban Design Section of the COSA Unified Development Code (Article 6 35-630 to 35-634). (Pape-Dawson) conducted an intensive cultural resources survey supplemented by shovel testing and mechanical trenching for the proposed Westpointe West Off-Site Sewer Extension Phase 3 Project (Project) in western San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The Project consists of the installation of a 1.5-mile (mi; 2.4-kilometer [km])-long, 36-inch (91-centimeter)-diameter sewer extension pipeline on privately-owned land northeast of Talley Road, between two tributaries to Medio Creek. At the request of the City of San Antonio (COSA), Pape-Dawson Engineers, Inc. (Pape-Dawson) monitored for cultural resources during the planting of new trees within portions of the existing Olmos Basin Golf Course, located west of the intersection of Basse Road and US 281, in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The trees were placed randomly throughout the golf course along with new, connecting irrigation lines. Excavations for the trees averaged 3.6 feet (ft) (1.1 meters2 [m2]) in diameter and 1.6 ft (0.5 m) deep. On behalf of CPS Energy, Pape-Dawson Engineers (Pape-Dawson) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the Calaveras Power Station proposed improvement areas in east San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The property improvements will consist of a series of evaporation ponds, the location of which has not yet been determined. Vertical depths of impacts are anticipated to extend up to 20 feet (ft) (6 meters [m]) below the ground surface. The current project area comprises two tracts of land totaling approximately 228 acres (92 hectares [ha]).

At the request of Matiraan, Ltd., Pape‐Dawson conducted an intensive archaeological survey with shovel testing and backhoe trenching of the proposed 37‐acre (15‐hectare [ha]) Casa Bella Estates residential development in compliance with the Historic Preservation and Design Section (Article 6 35‐360 to 35‐ 634) of the City of San Antonio (COSA) Unified Development Code (UDC). Based on the results of those investigations, the COSA Office of Historic Preservation (SA‐OHP) requested further work to mitigate the effects of the proposed development on a potentially significant archaeological site (41BX2131). On behalf of the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (Alamo RMA), Pape-Dawson conducted an intensive archaeological survey of a 2.53-kilometer (km) (1.57-mile) segment of North Foster Road in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The proposed project will extend along North Foster Road from Interstate 10 (IH 10) to East Houston Street (Farm-to-Market [FM] Road 1346), and will include expanding the existing twolane road to a four-lane road, consisting of two 3.7-meter (m) (12-foot [ft]) travel lanes, with a 1.8-m (6- ft) shoulder in each direction. This report documents the removal of individuals buried within Campbell’s Bayou Cemetery (41GV171) to avoid potential impact to the remains during implementation of remediation activities at the Malone Service Company Superfund Site (Site) in Texas City, TX. An oil recovery and waste processing facility had operated at the Site for more than 30 years, ending in the mid1990s. The facility had stored, processed, and disposed of industrial solid wastes and hazardous wastes. In July 2012, a group of companies known as the Malone Cooperating Parties (MCP) entered into a Consent Decree with the U.S. Government, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, …
