Selling The Southern Highlands: Tourism And Community Development In The Mountain South, Christopher Brenden Martin

Doctoral Dissertations

Focusing on Buncombe County, North Carolina, Blount County, Tennessee, and Sevier County, Tennessee as representative resort areas in the mountain South, this study recognizes tourism as a central factor in the historical development of the region's cultural identity, economy, and landscape. In studying the variant development patterns of resort communities in the southern highlands, it is apparent that tourism has simultaneously produced both continuity and change as well as positive and negative consequences. Survival Strategies Of Black Kalamazooans: Migration, Kinship Networks And Work In A Midwestern Village, 1860-1900, Carson Jeanne Leftwich

Masters Theses

An investigation of the lives of African Americans in a small Midwestern village in the second half of the nineteenth century finds that paradigms vary significantly from that of urban Northern or rural Southern black lives. Three survival strategies are explored: work, migration, and kinship networks. Residential and home ownership patterns are explored, as is the structure of the village, neighborhood, and home. The work of men and women, education, state of birth and subsequent migrations, household structure, and kin relationships are analyzed.

The study uses only public records: manuscript census records from 1860, 1870, and 1880; Kalamazoo City Directories …

The focus of this examination is Kelley's role in formulating, implementing, and sustaining America's anti-communist policy developed and solidified during the 1920s and 1930s. Particular attention is given to the senate recognition hearing of 1924, Kelley's training of future diplomats (George Kennan, Charles Bohlen, et al.), and his contributions to the preparations leading to the United States' recognition of Russia in 1933. The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr. Jan 1997

The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr.

Adams County History

The history of the American Revolution which most Americans have learned and which is everyday reinforced in the public media is essentially but one of several competing interpretations of that conflict. We rarely think about this, so successfully has that particular history taken root in our culture. Common sense, however, should caution us that the British also possess a version or versions which differ in important ways from ours. The French, our allies during the Revolution, offer yet another construction, one stressing that war's place in their own long history of conflict with Great Britain. And had the northeastern American …

James Shirley's The Politician And The Demand For Responsible Government In The Court Of Charles I, James R. Keller

Quidditas

On 13 June 1629, Dr. Lamb, a person physician and astrologer to the duke of Buckingham, while strolling down a London street was attacked by an angry mob and beaten to death. When he first noticed the crowd gathering, he summoned a group of sailors to guard him. However, incensed by years of arbitrary government, economic hardship, and war, the mob pursued Lamb with the intention of making his death an example for the duke; they called him "the Duke's Devil." As Lamb made his way toward a local tavern, the ever-increasing pack began to pummel him with stones, and …
