"Actuated By The Fear Of Loosing Their All": Civilian Response To The Revolutionary War In Georgia, Leslie Hall

Between 1775 and 1782 Georgia was wracked by social and political revolutions, as well as a local civil war. Britain and the United States wanted Georgia, and during the Revolutionary War they established competing civil governments and military units within her borders. Irregular troops, autonomous militia units and unaligned marauders roamed the countryside, while the military requisitioned property and claimed booty. As the threat of famine and anarchy grew, the rival governments struggled to keep people from fleeing Georgia, and allowed a flexible allegiance in order to maintain the population.
