The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form Aug 1956

The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form

History ETDs

Since neither the North nor the South had faced squarely the likelihood of war until the action at Fort Sumter, it is not surprising that both governments were unprepared for the handling of prisoners until they were actually confronted with the capture of troops. Of necessity, an impromptu and makeshift prison administration had to be devised, and, indeed, the retention of prisoners was not universally accepted as essential so long as it could be avoided. No suitable provisions or advance preparations for the care of war prisoners were undertaken by governments more vitally concerned with the deployment and supply of …

The History Of Interposition, John Harrison Geiser Jul 1956

The History Of Interposition, John Harrison Geiser

Master's Theses

As long as governments, laws and regulations have existed, men have sought means to challenge, circumvent and annul them. Whether honorably or selfishly motivated, only time, the great revelator can prove; and few lessons learned serve to prevent mens thoughts from again straying to these channels or desire.

To thoroughly exhaust the subject or desire in man to resist authority in government would be to re-write mythology and add still another labor to the burdens or Hercules. To do it completely would involve a lifetime of study, another of writing, and would necessitate encompassing all knowledge of men, religion, government …

Some Views Of Slavery From The Writings Of Virginia Authors, 1824-1865, Josephine Mary Logan Jul 1956

Some Views Of Slavery From The Writings Of Virginia Authors, 1824-1865, Josephine Mary Logan

Master's Theses

The period from 1824 to 1865 was a most critical one in the history of the United States. It was during those years that issues of great magnitude arose. After a period of discussion, views crystallized and finally became fundamental beliefs in the minds of the people of both the North and tho South. The result of those beliefs culminated in the Civil war. Tho issues were concerned chiefly with the question or states' rights, tho protective tariff, and, last but not least, with that of African slavery.

In Virginia, which had been the first of tho English colonies in …

The Public Domain In New Mexico 1854-1891, Victor Westphall May 1956

The Public Domain In New Mexico 1854-1891, Victor Westphall

History ETDs

New Mexico enjoys the use and benefits of the most complete and ingenious system of identifying land areas ever devised by man - the rectangular system of surveying. This system of survey was used in the states of the United States except "six New England States, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas, the United States not being the owner of public lands in any of these political divisions." The economic efficiency of surveying with this system has done much to preclude the possibility of litigation over boundaries as is …

Oxford Movement: Its Themes And Their Significance, Arthur B. Goyette May 1956

Oxford Movement: Its Themes And Their Significance, Arthur B. Goyette

Senior Scholar Papers

In retrospective, the Oxford movement of nineteenth century England provides one with an interesting study of the struggles between the spiritual and secular worlds. However, repeated abstraction in an interpretation of its significance has tended to distort accurate understanding of its historical development. Often this also has resulted n a misinterpretation of the nature of its major themes and their significance to the world. For these reasons, this study has attempted to describe the origin, maturity, and dissolution of the series of events which strictly speaking may be considered to be the Oxford movement. In conclusion, liberty has been taken …

A History Of The Rambouillet Breed Of Sheep In Utah, Edwin M. G. Seely May 1956

A History Of The Rambouillet Breed Of Sheep In Utah, Edwin M. G. Seely

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The domestic sheep in the flocks in the state of Utah all trace their origins back to Europe. Between the sixteenth century and the present, sheep have made at least six different journeys from the old world to America and have fused their blood in the formation of the sheep industry of Utah. Each of these movements has a dramatic and interesting story to be told, but the trek of the Rambouillet is perhaps the most fascinating of all. The journey began in Spain, when by sea and by land the hardy fine-wool Spanish Merino made its way into France …

David Lipscomb's Doctrine Of The Church, Herman L. Barnett Jan 1956

David Lipscomb's Doctrine Of The Church, Herman L. Barnett

Graduate Thesis Collection

David Lipscomb, editor of the Gospel Advocate for almost half a century, was a man of wide influence. He was intensely devoted to the cause of Christ. In the estimation of his admirers he "had a keener and deeper insight to the meaning of the Holy Scriptures and of God's dealings with the race than any other one man in all Christendom." Though such a judgement is open to question, the man becomes a fit subject for such a study as we have attempted to make.

Japan's Foreign Policy, 1931-1941 : As Influenced By The Militarists And The Zaibatsu, William F. Hecomovich

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There are the ways in which Japan was prepared for war. The purpose of this paper will be to show how the militarists achieved the power that they did, power so great that it enabled them to go over the heads of, and the protests of, the civilian branch of government and even the Emperor himself if necessary. The history of the warlords needs to be examined in order to furnish a background needed for a study such as this.

The primary function of this investigation will be to show the role played by these two factions during the “decisive …

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania Jan 1956

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The decline of British influence in world affairs is one of the more pronounced political phenomena of modern times. Over the past century key territories subject to British rule have been slipping loose from their imperial moorings at an ever more rapid rate. Those remaining subject to British authority grow progressively more belligerent.

In his search for an understanding or this eclipse or British sovereignty, the contemporary historian finds himself groping through a network of complexly interrelated social, political, economic, and psychological processes. One or another student or history has argued that specific instances or groups of these processes are …
