Blog: Radical Sydney/Radical History, Rowan Cahill, Terry Irving
Terry Irving
This blog was initiated in 2010 in association with the publication of the book "Radical Sydney" (UNSW Press: 2010) co-authoured by Rowan Cahill and Terry Irving. Since then it has morphed to focus on the authors' ongoing thoughts on the theory and practice of 'radical history'. The blog also has related essays by historian Humphrey McQueen, and disability activist Joan Hume.

Radical Sydney - Places, Portraits And Unruly Episodes, Terry Irving, Rowan Cahill

Sydney is represented to its citizens and to the rest of the world as a postcard, an impressive, beautiful city, a desirable tourist destination.
But there has always been another Sydney not viewed so fondly by the city’s rulers, a radical Sydney they are intent on ‘disappearing’ beneath concrete and glass. In the arc of working-class suburbs to the south and west, menace and disaffection developed. From the early nineteenth century through to the late twentieth century these suburbs were large and explosive places of marginalised ideas, bohemian neighbourhoods, dissident politics and contentious action.

Rediscovering Radical History, Terry Irving
Rediscovering Radical History, Terry Irving
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
This article examines aspects of the connection between radical history and labour history in Australia. It begins by resurrecting the forgotten history work by intellectuals in the labour movement from the 1880s to the 1950s, and the conservative attacks on radical history in the 50s and 60s. It continues by highlighting the early attempts to keep this radical tradition alive among labour historians, and concludes by criticising Robin Gollan's failure to distinguish popular democracy from the democratic possibilities of representative government.
Gender Violence In India Prajnya Report 2010, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Gender Violence In India Prajnya Report 2010, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
Gender violence in personal lives as well as the systems and structures perpetuating it need serious examination. Indian women experience all kinds of gendered violence at different stages of their lives, from womb to tomb, as a result of modernisation and commercialisation of subsistence economies, family ties becoming less supportive, increasing migration, demanding work, inhuman labour processes in informal economies, sectarian vested interests manifesting through identity politics, trafficking of women and girls as cheap labour, forced marriage and various forms of misogyny in print and electronic media. Honour killing of young lovers and married couples by their relatives brings to …

Não Uma Outra República, A Nossa República, Outra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Mapping International Chaos, Dylan Kissane
Mapping International Chaos, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
Mapping is inherently a subjective and exclusionary practice as the cartographer decides which elements of the world are included and which can safely be ignored. Similarly, when an international relations theorist describes a new theory it is necessary to define the elements which are essential to understanding the complexities of an international political system, explain why other elements have been excluded and justify why those decisions were made. The subjective nature of theorizing international affairs and the necessary exclusionary practices in which the theorist engages mean that the arguments supporting a new theory of international relations must be rather stronger …

Revolution In Political Affairs, Dylan Kissane

Extract:
"Recognising the marked impact of the internet on both practical politics and the practices of political scientists, it is not too large a step to paraphrase the US Department of Defence and decree the internet a Revolution in Political Affairs. Akin to its military phrase mate, the internet is effecting all areas of political discourse, exchange and public policy while, at the same time, forcing those who study and theorise politics to change their existing ways of thinking, working and imagining their chosen field..."
(Not So) Special Relationships: Explaining Alliance Behaviour In The English Speaking World [Relaţii (Nu Atât De) Speciale. Explicarea Comportamentului De Alianţă În Lumea Vorbitorilor De Limbă Engleză], Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
ENGLISH: Throughout the 20th century the major powers in the global Anglosphere often found themselves allies in armed conflict. These war-time alliances – sometimes temporary, more often part of a longer term cooperation – are sometimes held to arise because of common histories, common values, similar national ideologies and similar notions of international right and wrong. Indeed, the political rhetoric surrounding declarations of war has often cited such factors as colonial history, international friendship and “special relationships” as motivators for joining armed coalitions against third party states. Yet while there stand stark examples of these major English speaking powers acting …

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi
Fathi Habashi
The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

Change And Continuity In Paraguayan History - 1811, 1911, 2011, Robert Andrew Nickson
Robert Andrew Nickson
This concluding chapter of a book to celebrate the bicentenary of Paraguay in 2011 briefly traces the dramatic changes to the country - in territorial dimension, demography, landscape and social indicators - over the 200 years since independence in 1811. In contrast, it then highlights the continuity of dependence on primary production for insertion in the global economy as well as the cultural resilience of the Guaraní language as the key marker of national identity.

The Pacificator: Discovering The Lost Bust Of George Augustus Robinson, Gareth Knapman
The Pacificator: Discovering The Lost Bust Of George Augustus Robinson, Gareth Knapman
Gareth Knapman
IN ONE OF THE BACKHANDED compliments for which Mark Twain was famous, he observed ‘in memory of the Greatest man Australasia ever developed or ever will develop, there is a stately monument to George Augustus Robinson, the Conciliator, in – no, it is to another man, I forget his name’.1 As a critic of imperialism and colonialism, Twain saw Robinson as a like-minded being who was on the right side of history. As far as Twain was concerned, this humanitarian hero and critic of colonial expansion was forgotten in the gilded age of 1890s high imperialism. In Twain’s time, stately …

The Indian television system is one of the most extensive systems in the world. Terrestrial broadcasting, which has been the sole preserve of the government, provides television coverage to over 90% of India's 900 million people. By the end of 1996 nearly 50 million households had television sets. International satellite broadcasting, introduced in 1991, has swept across the country because of the rapid proliferation of small scale cable systems. By the end of 1996, Indians could view dozens of foreign and local channels and the competition for audiences and advertising revenues was one of the hottest in the world. In …
Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

CEFAM Cutting Edge #1 (18 November 2010 / B-316 / 15h)
Do the English speaking countries have a special relationship? If one English speaking country becomes involved in a war do others rush to assist them? What explains why English speaking countries sometimes stand as one but other times stand alone? This presentation takes the 20th century as a case study of Anglophone (non)cooperation and explains why national interests will always override international friendship.

Erin Passehl Stoddart
Students in the Boise State University course, “History of Women in Idaho,” helped develop Idaho Women’s History Day with research papers and poster exhibits at the Idaho State Capitol. These papers represent three perspectives on that project and highlight research on three individual women in Idaho history: Espe Alegria, May Arkwright Hutton, and Agnes Just Reid.
