The photographs depict primarily queer men using figurative body language to indicate their sexuality. "World War I has occupied an uneasy place in the American public and political consciousness.1 In the 1920s and 1930s, controversies over the war permeated the nation’s cultural and political life, influencing memorial culture and governmental policy. Interest in the war, however, waned considerably after World War II, a much larger and longer war for the United States. Despite a plethora of scholarly works examining nearly every aspect of the war, interest in the war remains limited even among academic historians. The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. The El Paso Women’s History Coloring Book Volume II celebrates this anniversary and women’s achievements, while also acknowledging that much work still remains to be done regarding women’s and voting rights.

This new bilingual (Spanish and English) coloring book builds upon the El Paso Women’s History Coloring Book, published in March 1991. The original coloring book was created by Eva Ross, a retired teacher and former Equity Program Specialist of the Ysleta Independent School District. On November 9 and 10, 1938, Nazi leadership unleashed an unprecedented orchestrated wave of violence against Jews in Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland, supposedly in response to the assassination of a Nazi diplomat by a young Polish Jew, but in reality to force the remaining Jews out of the country. During the pogrom, Stormtroopers, Hitler Youth, and ordinary Germans murdered more than a hundred Jews (many more committed suicide) and ransacked and destroyed thousands of Jewish institutions, synagogues, shops, and homes. Thirty thousand Jews were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.

Would the United States have developed differently if Virginia had not passed a law in 1670 proclaiming all subsequently arriving Africans as servants for life, or slaves? What if the state had not stripped all Free Blacks and Indians of voting rights in 1723, or outlawed interracial sex for 337 years?

Complicated Lives upends the pervasive belief that all Africans landing on the shores of Virginia beginning in late August 1619, became slaves. For 170 years, Akron has been linked to the wider world—ever since John Brown, the famous abolitionist and Akron’s most consequential resident, traveled on behalf of Colonel Simon Perkins to the European capitals in 1846 to market the wool that became Akron’s first international export. In the late nineteenth century, Akron industrialist Lewis Miller captured international accolades for the farm machinery manufactured at his Buckeye Mower Works, located where E. J. Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics, and the Maverick Tradition is a case study of one of the most unique congressional districts in the United States. Located in Fairfield County, the fourth district is a bedroom community close to New York City. The district's close proximity to Wall Street, the tendency of the district's constituents to elect free-thinking congresspersons, and the wealth and celebrity status of many district residents have resulted in a setting which can be described as an anomaly in the larger context of congressional politics. Glenna Snow was the home economics editor for the Akron Beacon Journal in the 1930s and 1940s. Snow and the newspaper produced a book of readers' recipes in 1938. Six years later, adding more recipes and a substitution section due to government rationing during WWII, the 1944 edition was published. Introduced by historian, Kevin Kern, this reprint edition contains1385 "recipes in a readable form so that each ingredient, with its amount falls into the proper place at the proper time, to give the best results." The recipes are diverse and unique including instructions for "War Cake" and "Martha Washington Omelet." …

"Running of Full" is a well-written account of twin sisters, Ruth and Ruby Crawford, who in their long lives made marks in every field of endeavor they undertook. Through the proverbial glass ceilings in law, banking, accounting, they rose to be among the first women bank officers in the country. Their stewardship and devotion to community and national causes, like the Humane Society, are legend. Often called "the 24-hour Crawfords," Ruth and Ruby were known as much for their prodigious energy as they were for their wit and charm.
