A Pittsburg State University football players’ playbook from the mid-1950s, a football program from 1951, and a newspaper clipping.

Edward LeRoy Simpson was born in Miami, Oklahoma in 1934, to Eddie and Ada Simpson. From 1952-1956 LeRoy attended the Kansas State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University). He played several positions on the football team, including quarterback, and lettered all four years. He went on to receive a master’s degree from the Kansas State Teachers College in 1961. Gerald W. (Jerry) Barnard was born in Oswego, Kansas in 1918. Barnard attended the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) from 1936-1940 and after graduation, worked as an accountant. He worked with the Deming Investment Company and then the First National Bank of Oswego. 2001 National Lacrosse Finalist Plaque, Devin J. Hewitt

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

Amidst a dusty trophy case in Bream Athletic Center sits a small plaque. It has a gold lacrosse stick and simply states: “2001 National Lacrosse Finalist”. Most people would walk by and never even notice the plaque, and if they did they probably wouldn’t think twice about it. However, upon delving into the history of the plaque I found a story of intense on-and-off-the field rivalries, the emergence of a national power, players learning to come together to overcome adversity, the culmination of years of building, and eventual heartbreak. This collection contains a two and a half page, hand-written autobiography of Betty Bainbridge Pittman’s years at Armstrong Junior College.

Also included are programs for the First Commencement and Honors Day (1937), Sophomore Alumni Luncheon with Betty’s photograph on cover (1940), First Annual Session of the Armstrong College Institute of Citizens, and the 1939 Armstrong Class 50th Reunion (1989). An admission ticket and invitation to the Fourth Commencement (1940) and both of her degree certificates are a part of the collection. Mrs. Gordon (Rosalyn Weiser, Class of 1943) lent a scrapbook highlighting Mr. Gordon's athletic career, giving the archivist permission to make photocopies of its contents before returning it to her. The scrapbook contained a letter from Dean J. Thomas Askew inviting Gordon to take exams for a tuition scholarship because of his excellent high school grades. The archivist also made copies of newspaper clippings (The Savannah Morning News, The Inkwell, 1938 and 1939) related to Gordon's years at Armstrong on the basketball and football teams.
