Members of the Grand Forks Business and Professional Women’s Club (GFBPWC) personified the intersection of consumer culture, Progressive reform, and the professionalization of women’s labor that occurred between 1890 and 1930. Their membership in the GFBPWC implied economic, political, and social empowerment and granted them an opportunity to actively participate in and transform their community. Not only were these professional women recognized as reputable, upstanding, and passionate members of their community, but they also saw themselves as agents of positive change and improvement within their own lives and for future generations. Course Materials

This winter session course invites students to explore motion capture through the lens of traditional oral storytelling practices. Students will actively identify the unique and distinguishing features of orature, and leverage their own cultural backgrounds, personal perspectives, and idiosyncrasies to create motion capture data that can be used in crafting an immersive digital retelling of a folktale.

The Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) at the University of Maine is a state-funded department of research and advocacy for Maine laborers and their issues. First established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, the original aim of the Bureau was to foster education about the history and current issues of labor in today's techno-capitalist society, as well as advocate on behalf of labor. Scranton, Pennsylvania was home to early industry crucial to early American development. Early settlements turned to booming businesses as locals took advantage of local coal and iron deposits to build the rail industry. This growth, furthered by the geographic advantages of the city, made Scranton the perfect place for a new business venture. In 1891, the English Nottingham Lace Firm was looking to expand business, eventually settling on Northeastern Pennsylvania. Although the company saw some difficulties at its inception, it soon became the largest global producer of Nottingham lace in the world. Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins

Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …
