Bicycling During The 1890s: The Unlikely Means Of Women’S Social Reform, Rachel Lewchanin
History Student Projects
The paper focuses on the women’s bicycling movement in the US during the 1890s. More specifically, it argues that bicycling and the movement that developed behind it was used by upper and upper-middle class white women to create social changes that furthered their independence from certain societal expectations.

America In Wwi 1914-1915: Neutral In Policy, Allied In Practice, Kailian Blohm
History Student Projects
This paper explores to what extent the United States kept to its policy of neutrality in 1914-1915 before it officially entered WWI. The paper discusses key figures in defining Anglo-American relations. After considering both economic and diplomatic factors in American foreign policy, the paper concludes that the United States had a vested interest in an Allied victory from the outset of the war.

Knocking On Europe's Door: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The European Response To The 2015 Refugee Crisis And The Ukrainian Refugee Crisis, Jacob J. Mckim
Global Studies Senior Capstone
Europe is, and has long been at the center of refugee reception for many areas of the world due to its geographical position and general security. However, the European response to refugees has varied drastically in different situations. This paper examines the European response to both the 2015 Refugee Crisis and the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis. The focus being on what factors, whether political, racial, or religious, has led for some individuals to be received more favorably in Europe than others. Through examining this, the conditions for successful and long-lasting refugee reception hopefully be more clearly seen.

Christians In Conflict: How American Christians Responded To The Vietnam War, Shiloh Mcfarland
Christians In Conflict: How American Christians Responded To The Vietnam War, Shiloh Mcfarland
History Student Projects
This paper details the overall response of American Christians to the Vietnam War. Having a vast and varying response, the paper details Christians who both supported and protested the conflict in Vietnam. In order to provide a deep look into a vast topic in just nine pages, the paper uses the Southern Baptist church specifically to provide insight into the theological, political, and ideological reasons that Christians used as the basis for their response. The paper comes to the conclusion that Christians' response to the war was largely dependent on their buy-in to the containment theory.
The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp
The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
Unlike the general assumption that England was completely Christianized after Augustine’s mission to the island, witchcraft and paganism thrived all throughout the Christian period of Anglo-Saxon history. Sources condemning witchcraft and paganism increased during the Danish raids in the mid-ninth century and beyond due to an increased sense of a perceived threat of paganism. King Alfred himself reacted to this threat by doing everything he could to strengthen his people in their Christian beliefs through education reform and his law code. The Church battled against the perceived threat through penitentials–which they used to discourage pagan practices. Lay-people fought against …
The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan
The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
There has been no shortage of literature written on the Mercury Space Program, focusing on many different aspects ranging from the personnel, technology, politics, and achievements of the program. The prevailing discussion of the space program focuses on the astronauts themselves as they gained celebrity status long before they had done anything to merit it. The vast body of scholarship on the topic takes the popularity of the Mercury Seven astronauts as matter-of-fact rather than viewing it as manufactured by NASA in order to bolster support for a largely unproven space program. By emphasizing the “everyman” aspect of the astronauts, …

Protecting Youth From Mexican Drug Cartel Recruitment: The Prospects Of Educational Interventions, Lisa Hochstetler
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
This investigation considers the impact of Mexico’s War on Drugs since 2006 and the influence of widespread cartel networks on the youth population. As both victims and perpetrators of drug-related crime, the young individuals of Mexico are the center of this research. The goal of this investigation was to determine how education in Mexico’s grade schools could be leveraged to protect its youth from drug-related violence and cartel recruitment. Therefore, the study examines both the challenges suffered by the education system due to the Drug War and the prospects for educational interventions to strengthen and protect youth over and against …
Reform And Regression: The Aftermath Of The 1909 Cairo, Illinois Lynching, Kenedy Manuel
Reform And Regression: The Aftermath Of The 1909 Cairo, Illinois Lynching, Kenedy Manuel
History Student Projects
My paper highlights the research of the event and the context and impact of the lynching. My familial connection guided my research and led me to see the positives and negatives of this violent event. The effective use of the 1905 Illinois law against mob lynchings was a state victory. Ida B. Wells and other activists were helpful in this process. But researching the history of Cairo prior to the lynching and the aftermath of the murders, showed that the victory did not impact Cairo sufficiently. The event was not an anomaly once one researches America's problem with lynching at …

Searching For The Identity Of Neferneferuaten, Sarah Riley Campbell
Searching For The Identity Of Neferneferuaten, Sarah Riley Campbell
Celebration of Scholarship 2022
Queen, King, ruler, mother, Great Royal Wife, Nefertiti, Semenkare. All of these names pertain to the question of the identity of the ruler, Neferneferuaten. Ankhkheperure Neferneferuaten was a pharaoh who reigned toward the end of the Amarna era during the Eighteenth Dynasty. The royal succession of this period is very unclear as well as the gender of said pharaoh. The epithet of the pharaoh’s name establishes, or at least suggests, that the ruler was female. However, this fact is widely contested. Due to the gender questioning and the lack of concrete information available about the ruler Neferneferuaten, many have come …

Rani Lakshmi Bai Of Jhansi: A Study In Indian Patriotic Memory, Elise Wixtrom
Rani Lakshmi Bai Of Jhansi: A Study In Indian Patriotic Memory, Elise Wixtrom
Phi Alpha Theta Conference at Taylor University
Since the national Indian Independence movement of the 1940s, the Sepoy Mutiny has been ubiquitous as a romantic nationalist symbol. Among those immortalized by the Sepoy Mutiny is Rani Lakshmi Bai of of Jhansi, queen of the city of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Her holding, passed on by her late husband, was threatened by British rule under ascendancy laws.1 Due to her tenuous position, Lakshmi Bai eventually joined the Indian rebels, becoming a recognizable heroine in folk tales and British imagination alike. Her image, formed by the Indian Independence movement of the 1940s, has many fictional iterations. Most, if not …

Looking From Yesterday: Taylor University At 175, Ashley Chu, Tesia Jurasheck, Elizabeth Hammond, Alyssa Lykins
Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship
“Looking from Yesterday” is the title of Dr. Milo A. Rediger’s 1970 address about the importance of Christian higher education during times of uncertainty and volatility. In this address, Rediger references the “Taylor concept,” which included symbols of oil (light) and the cross as a hopeful sign to the world. Despite its delivery more than 50 years ago, the theme of Rediger’s address still rings true today as we continue to seek to fulfill the mission of Taylor University during our own challenging times. This year (2021-22), Taylor University will recognize its founding 175 years ago. This research project will …

From Perfect Shuffles To Landau's Function, Brian D. Beasley
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019
If we view a given shuffle of a deck of cards as a permutation, then repeatedly applying this same shuffle will eventually return the deck to its original order. In general, how many steps will that take? What happens in the case of so-called perfect shuffles? What type of shuffle will require the greatest number of applications before restoring the original deck? This talk will address those questions and provide a brief history of the work of Edmund Landau on the maximal order of a permutation in the symmetric group on n objects. It will also note some recent progress …
Developing Mathematicians: The Benefits Of Weaving Spiritual And Disciplinary Discipleship, Patrick Eggleton
Developing Mathematicians: The Benefits Of Weaving Spiritual And Disciplinary Discipleship, Patrick Eggleton
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019
Part of the goal of discipleship at the Christian university is for faith development to seep into the hearts of the students. Similarly, the goal of the development of future mathematicians is for the mathematical proficiencies, the practices like problem solving and analytical reasoning that permeate each of the courses, to seep into the hearts of our majors. This presentation shares how the weaving of our spiritual and disciplinary discipleship efforts benefits the faith development of our students while also helping them to think like a mathematician.
The Applicability Of Mathematics And The Naturalist Die, Ricardo J. Cordero-Soto
The Applicability Of Mathematics And The Naturalist Die, Ricardo J. Cordero-Soto
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019
Philosopher and Christian apologist William Lane Craig has proposed a valid deductive argument for God’s existence that is rooted in the applicability of mathematics to the physical universe. This argument was presented by Craig during a debate with philosopher and atheist Alex Rosenberg. During the debate, Rosenberg presented a rebuttal to the soundness of this argument by appealing to chance as an explanation to the applicability of mathematics to the physical universe. In this talk, the presenter will discuss how the naturalist die is unable to produce “chance application” of mathematics while defending the soundness of the argument in light …
Analyzing The Impact Of Active Learning In General Education Mathematics Courses, Amanda Harsy, Marie Meyer, Michael Smith, Brittany Stephenson
Analyzing The Impact Of Active Learning In General Education Mathematics Courses, Amanda Harsy, Marie Meyer, Michael Smith, Brittany Stephenson
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019
This talk shares the preliminary results of a study that explores the general perceptions and attitudes of students in general education mathematics courses taught using primarily active learning- based methods (like group work, projects, and discovery learning), and compares them with those enrolled in a general education mathematics course taught in a more traditional and lecture-based method. We present an analysis of survey data collected throughout the semester, which explores the disposition and mindset of students, their mathematical confidence and anxiety, and perceptions of pedagogical methods used for the teaching of mathematics. We also explored how these perceptions and dispositions …

Faith, Mathematics, And Science: The Priority Of Scripture In The Pursuit And Acquisition Of Truth, Bob Mallison
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2019
This research will examine some approaches for identifying truth as well as some issues involved in recognizing reliable sources of information. We will proceed from a decidedly Christian perspective including the conviction that God created an orderly universe (and that studying nature provides valuable information about Him) and that His Word, the Bible, even more clearly expresses in- formation about Him. We will discuss some of the essential tools used by mathematicians and scientists for the discovery of truth – namely, models. We will examine some valuable models from history, and briefly discuss that as additional scientific information became available, …
