Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
C. S. Monaco
This essay explores the meaning behind America's divergent response to Osceola, one of the most noted of native American war leaders, and the importance of political party affiliation in the construction of his media iconography. Moreover, Osceola's cultural and political significance is placed within the critical context of settler-colonialism. Previous work on this Native leader has bypassed the crucial role of Whig and Democratic political operatives as well as the emergent mass media in the manufacture of a self-serving and highly skewed celebrity image. Thus an essential perspective has been missing from the historiography, a lacuna that is particularly addressed …
Dancing The Fairy Tale, Laura E. Katz Rizzo
Dancing The Fairy Tale, Laura E. Katz Rizzo
Laura E Katz Rizzo
“Dancing the Fairy Tale offers a new historical perspective on the development of the art of ballet, and how women have played pivotal roles as performing artists, directors, and producers. Laura Katz Rizzo uses The Sleeping Beauty as her vehicle and she debunks the prevailing historical narrative that ballet’s evolution has been linear and dominated by male choreographers and directors. She successfully argues that the ballerina is an integral part of the creative process. Well written, and extensively researched, Dancing the Fairy Tale will be a welcome addition to any balletomane’s library, and an excellent text for courses in dance …
Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould
Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould
Rebecca Gould
During the final decade of his productive life, Moshe Gammer (1950-2013) edited the first major English-language series on Daghestani philology. This chapter examines key aspects of Gammer’s legacy, while offering an overview of Daghestani philology from the colonial period to the present, and outlining how this field of inquiry enables us to revise regnant paradigms concerning language, law, and the circulation of culture within contemporary Islamic Studies. I concentrate on the potential of Daghestan’s Islamic archives to contribute to the study of linguistic and legal modernity, transregional Arabic in its interface with the vernacular, and the multiplicity of Islamic modernities. …

An Academic Parable: Robert W. Fogel's Raft, Heitor Moura Filho

The book Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery, by Robert W. Fogel and Stanley L. Engerman achieved great fame as a revolutionary interpretation of North American slavery, even though at the time it was criticized in detail by specialists in quantitative economic history. We believe that to quote it as a pioneering quantitative study of slavery has become an academic “meme”, which does not adequately reflect the severe criticism suffered by the book during the years following its publication. This text looks back to the book’s release and the subsequent debates in the ideological and methodological …
The Comparison Of Power And Authority Of Women In China And Minangkabau Societies, Arif Rohman
The Comparison Of Power And Authority Of Women In China And Minangkabau Societies, Arif Rohman
Arif Rohman
The power and authority available for women are very important in measuring the cultural system in each society contains a gender bias or not. This study will examine whether the matrifocal and matrilineal society guarantees gender equality rather than the patriarchal and patrilineal society and to what extent these societies provide power and authority to women in both domestic and public spheres. To support analysis, this article will compare two Asian societies; those are China as a representative of the patriarchal and patrilineal society and Minangkabau as a representative of the matrifocal and matrilineal society. The analysis will be focused …

I’m in the process of completing the final draft on my biography book, “AN ACCOUNT OF MY LIFE’S BLESSINGS And MY SPANISH ANCESTORS - Among the First Families of New Mexico” that will go out for further editing and for additional information and commentaries to be inserted. I’m still trying to organize an area in the book for additional documents/photos that I still have to scan and upload onto the hard drive/CD for the final print. This has been more of an effort, or so it seems, than researching and writing my PhD dissertation, or at least I’ve put in …

Schooling In The ‘Iron Cage’ And The Crucial Role Of Interpretive, Normative, And Critical Perspectives In Social Foundations Studies, Brian W. Dotts
Brian W Dotts
This article addresses the unique role performed by social foundations programs in colleges of education and in addressing broader issues facing education today, which fundamentally include the development of interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives in academia. All three perspectives serve to create a scholarly framework within which students and academicians interpret and normatively reflect upon existing educational, political, historical, religious, economic, and social institutions critically. In other words, although many departments in colleges of education tend to fulfill the functional, professional, and institutional requirements essential in preparing future teachers to enter public and private schools, social foundations programs utilize interdisciplinary …

The Reactionary Road To Free Love: How Doma, State Marriage Amendments And Social Conservatives Undermine Traditional Marriage, Scott Titshaw
The Reactionary Road To Free Love: How Doma, State Marriage Amendments And Social Conservatives Undermine Traditional Marriage, Scott Titshaw
Scott Titshaw
Much has been written about the possible effects on different-sex marriage of legally recognizing same-sex marriage. This article looks at the defense of marriage from a different angle: It shows how rejecting same-sex marriage results in political compromise and the proliferation of “marriage light” alternatives (e.g., civil unions, domestic partnerships, or reciprocal beneficiaries) that undermine the unique status of marriage for everyone. In the process, it examines several aspects of the marriage debate in detail. After describing the flexibility of marriage as it has evolved over time, the article focuses on recent state constitutional amendments attempting to stop further development. …

The Effects Of Mass Consumption On American Society, Jon Foster
The Effects Of Mass Consumption On American Society, Jon Foster

For a generation that doesn’t relate to the ‘eighties’, fondly remembers the ‘nineties’, and came of age in the two thousands, we often think of the sixties with a bit of nostalgia; reminiscing about Woodstock, and hippies, the nuclear family or maybe the Beatles. Unfortunately, much of this understanding is isolated within a bubble; wherein the sincere socioeconomic issues of the time, often become detached from their idealistic counterpart. To clarify, the causal relations that gave rise to what my generation remembers and typifies as the ‘sixties’, becomes distorted within the context of the rapidly changing times.

Resorts And Reform: Archaeology At The Wiawaka Holiday House, Lake George, New York, Megan E. Springate
Resorts And Reform: Archaeology At The Wiawaka Holiday House, Lake George, New York, Megan E. Springate
Megan E. Springate
The Wiawaka Holiday House on Lake George, New York is among the oldest continuously operating women’s holiday retreats in the United States. The Holiday House was founded on the grounds of a failing resort hotel at the turn of the twentieth century by wealthy women largely from industrial families to provide factory “girls” opportunities for healthful vacations in the countryside. Before the Holiday House was established, the property was the site of two resort hotels; their histories, spanning much of the nineteenth century, reflect the rise and transformations in the Adirondack resort hotel business. Presented in the early stages of …

The Duck Supper: Roasting Gender In Early Twentieth-Century Bowling Green, Lynn E. Niedermeier
The Duck Supper: Roasting Gender In Early Twentieth-Century Bowling Green, Lynn E. Niedermeier
Lynn E. Niedermeier
In 1901, a scandal rocked Potter College for Young Ladies in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Five students attempted to climb from their dormitory window for a midnight rendezvous with some boys from town. When the college's president, Reverend Benjamin F. Cabell, interrupted the prank, a chaotic exchange of gunfire ensued between him and the boys. Cabell’s subsequent attempt to hush up the matter, his solicitude for the boys, and his harsh treatment of the female students drew outrage from citizens and mockery from the press. Both the incident and its aftermath highlighted the tension, affecting even this small Kentucky town, between …

Confounding Identity: Exploring The Life And Discourse Of Lucy E. Parsons, Michelle Diane Wright
Confounding Identity: Exploring The Life And Discourse Of Lucy E. Parsons, Michelle Diane Wright
Michelle Diane Wright
Despite the vast research conducted on radical activist history of late nineteenth century Chicago, there is very little that examines political and social ideologies that diverged from the westernized male archetype of the era. Furthermore, the contrived disciplinary divide that separates scholarly study into artificial and static compartments such as labor history, anarchist history, women’s studies or others, oversimplifies the contributions of individuals that straddle all categories of endeavor. Lucy Parsons, a woman of color, was born in Waco, Texas in 1853 but moved to Chicago in 1873 and became a pivotal figure in the labor and anarchist movements well …
