Blog: Radical Sydney/Radical History, Rowan Cahill, Terry Irving

Terry Irving

This blog was initiated in 2010 in association with the publication of the book "Radical Sydney" (UNSW Press: 2010) co-authoured by Rowan Cahill and Terry Irving. Since then it has morphed to focus on the authors' ongoing thoughts on the theory and practice of 'radical history'. The blog also has related essays by historian Humphrey McQueen, and disability activist Joan Hume.

Radical Sydney - Places, Portraits And Unruly Episodes, Terry Irving, Rowan Cahill Aug 2014

Radical Sydney - Places, Portraits And Unruly Episodes, Terry Irving, Rowan Cahill

Terry Irving

Sydney is represented to its citizens and to the rest of the world as a postcard, an impressive, beautiful city, a desirable tourist destination.

But there has always been another Sydney not viewed so fondly by the city’s rulers, a radical Sydney they are intent on ‘disappearing’ beneath concrete and glass. In the arc of working-class suburbs to the south and west, menace and disaffection developed. From the early nineteenth century through to the late twentieth century these suburbs were large and explosive places of marginalised ideas, bohemian neighbourhoods, dissident politics and contentious action.

Through a series of snapshots of …

Rediscovering Radical History, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

This article examines aspects of the connection between radical history and labour history in Australia. It begins by resurrecting the forgotten history work by intellectuals in the labour movement from the 1880s to the 1950s, and the conservative attacks on radical history in the 50s and 60s. It continues by highlighting the early attempts to keep this radical tradition alive among labour historians, and concludes by criticising Robin Gollan's failure to distinguish popular democracy from the democratic possibilities of representative government.

Gender Violence In India Prajnya Report 2010, Professor Vibhuti Patel Dec 2010

Gender Violence In India Prajnya Report 2010, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Gender violence in personal lives as well as the systems and structures perpetuating it need serious examination. Indian women experience all kinds of gendered violence at different stages of their lives, from womb to tomb, as a result of modernisation and commercialisation of subsistence economies, family ties becoming less supportive, increasing migration, demanding work, inhuman labour processes in informal economies, sectarian vested interests manifesting through identity politics, trafficking of women and girls as cheap labour, forced marriage and various forms of misogyny in print and electronic media. Honour killing of young lovers and married couples by their relatives brings to …

Não Uma Outra República, A Nossa República, Outra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

The Pacificator: Discovering The Lost Bust Of George Augustus Robinson, Gareth Knapman Nov 2010

The Pacificator: Discovering The Lost Bust Of George Augustus Robinson, Gareth Knapman

Gareth Knapman

IN ONE OF THE BACKHANDED compliments for which Mark Twain was famous, he observed ‘in memory of the Greatest man Australasia ever developed or ever will develop, there is a stately monument to George Augustus Robinson, the Conciliator, in – no, it is to another man, I forget his name’.1 As a critic of imperialism and colonialism, Twain saw Robinson as a like-minded being who was on the right side of history. As far as Twain was concerned, this humanitarian hero and critic of colonial expansion was forgotten in the gilded age of 1890s high imperialism. In Twain’s time, stately …

Challenges And Strategies Of Mobile Advertising In India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Advertising is paid communication through a medium in which the sponsor is identified and the message is controlled. Every major medium is used to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, the Internet and today’s growing mobile advertising. Advertisements can also be seen on the seats of grocery carts, on the walls of an airport walkway, on the sides of buses, heard in telephone hold messages and instore PA systems but get paid for reading SMS on our mobile phones .It is the new way of marketing strategy for reaching subscribers. Mobile advertising is the business of encouraging …

Changing Mutual Perception Of Television News Viewers And Program Makers In India- A Case Study Of Cnn-Ibn And Its Unique Initiative Of Citizen Journalism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The Indian television system is one of the most extensive systems in the world. Terrestrial broadcasting, which has been the sole preserve of the government, provides television coverage to over 90% of India's 900 million people. By the end of 1996 nearly 50 million households had television sets. International satellite broadcasting, introduced in 1991, has swept across the country because of the rapid proliferation of small scale cable systems. By the end of 1996, Indians could view dozens of foreign and local channels and the competition for audiences and advertising revenues was one of the hottest in the world. In …

Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Nov 2010

Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Curry On Brooks, 'Before Earth Day: The Origins Of American Environmental Law, 1945-1970' (Book Review), Lynne E. Curry Nov 2010

Curry On Brooks, 'Before Earth Day: The Origins Of American Environmental Law, 1945-1970' (Book Review), Lynne E. Curry

Lynne E. Curry

Karl Boyd Brooks’s examination of environmental law in the mid-twentieth century serves to remind us of the widespread popular and bipartisan political consensus for protecting the environment that had coalesced by the time Americans celebrated the first Earth Day in April 1970. Brooks argues that “ordinary people made environmental law” (p. 5), by which he means that citizens identified unacceptable risks to the environment and initiated protests to which lawyers, legislators, regulators, courts, and policymakers were forced to respond. His account identifies and illuminates the key actors, laws, policies, and processes that produced environmental law as a viable field of …

Palavras Claras, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2010

Palavras Claras, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Quem assim fala, assim pensa. É critério infalível.

Lições Do Kiwi, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2010

Lições Do Kiwi, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Community Radio:History,Growth,Challenges And Current Status Of It With Special Reference To India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Oct 2010

Community Radio:History,Growth,Challenges And Current Status Of It With Special Reference To India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Community radio is a type of radio service that caters to the interests of a certain area, broadcasting content that is popular to a local audience but which may often be overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Modern-day community radio stations often serve their listeners by offering a variety of content that is not necessarily provided by the larger commercial radio stations. Community radio outlets may carry news and information programming geared toward the local area, particularly immigrant or minority groups that are poorly served by other major media outlets. Philosophically two distinct approaches to community radio can be discerned, …

Kings And Tyrants: Leonardo Bruni's Translation Of Xenophon's "Hiero", Brian Jeffrey Maxson Oct 2010

Kings And Tyrants: Leonardo Bruni's Translation Of Xenophon's "Hiero", Brian Jeffrey Maxson

Brian J. Maxson

Leonardo Bruni published one of his most widely copied translations, Xenophon's pro-monarchical Hiero, shortly before he penned his more famous original works, his Dialogues and Panegyric to the City of Florence. Scholars have traditionally focused on the political ideas present in these original treatises; yet, despite the centrality of political ideas to the Hiero, its temporal proximity to these works, and its enormous popularity (the work exists in 200 fifteenth-century manuscripts), scholars have neglected to offer a full assessment of Bruni's translation in the context of these works. Bruni's translation of Xenophon's Hiero fit into a debate …

The Beauvais Sacramentary In The Getty Museum As A "Coronation Sacramentary", Elizabeth Teviotdale Sep 2010

The Beauvais Sacramentary In The Getty Museum As A "Coronation Sacramentary", Elizabeth Teviotdale

Elizabeth C Teviotdale

Reexamines the evidence--paleographical, art historical, and circumstantial--that Carl Nordenfalk (1907-92) adduced for his hypothesis that Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, MS Ludwig V 1 (the ten surviving leaves of a sacramentary written and illuminated around the year 1000) was created for the occasion of the consecration in 1017 of Robert the Pious’s ten-year-old son Hugh as his co-ruler. In putting forward this hypothesis, Nordenfalk was building on a suggestion he made first in 1950 that the manuscript was written and illuminated at the behest of Robert the Pious by a Lombard artist named Nivardus, who was working at the …
