Sin In A Southern City: The Unearthed History Of Atlanta’S Postbellum-To-Progressive Era Prostitution Trade, Mandy J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D., Allyson Stephens
University Library Faculty Presentations
This presentation was given by Dr. Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh (Georgia State University Library faculty member) and Allyson Stephens (Georgia State University Sociology graduate student) at the 2022 Atlanta Studies Symposium. The presenters describe the methodology and share preliminary analyses of US Census data on Atlanta’s prostitution trade from 1880 through 1910. The presented research is a component of a larger project to reconstruct the lost history of the rise and fall of Atlanta’s prostitution trade from the Postbellum Era through the Progressive Era, drawing from newspapers, US Census data, city directories, property records, maps, and more. This site provides a …

"A Friend, A Nimble Mind, And A Book": Girls' Literary Criticism In Seventeen Magazine, 1958-1969, Jill E. Anderson
University Library Faculty Publications
This article argues that postwar Seventeen magazine, a publication deeply invested in enforcing heteronormativity and conventional models of girlhood and womanhood, was in fact a more complex and multivocal serial text whose editors actively sought out, cultivated, and published girls’ creative and intellectual work. Seventeen's teen-authored “Curl Up and Read” book review columns, published from 1958 through 1969, are examples of girls’ creative intellectual labor, introducing Seventeen's readers to fiction and nonfiction which ranged beyond the emerging “young-adult” literature of the period. Written by young people – including thirteen-year-old Eve Kosofsky (later Sedgwick) – who perceived Seventeen to be an …

“‘Going Steady?’: Documenting the History of Dating in American Culture, 1940-1990” is a one-credit, pass/no-credit freshman seminar taught for Georgia State University’s Honors College. This course has grown out of my current research on post-World War II girls' cultural and intellectual history and out of my work as Georgia State University's History, African-American Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Librarian. "Going Steady?" is designed to teach basic primary-source searching and interpretive skills and to familiarize students with primary sources available to them as Georgia State University students. Centering on a broad and engaging topic, the course offers a general …

DISCOVERY: Georgia State Honors College Undergraduate Research Journal
With the ending of World War II, the returning American veterans forced working women out of their war-time jobs and back to the home where they were to become views and mothers. During this time of transition, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein formed a partnership through which they would create musicals that were very different from the typical Pre-1945 musicals which featured all male casts and songs dealing with what it was like to be in war.
The new musicals featured a heroic main character that always falls for the dainty girl next door. This girl next door would always …

Father Of The Nation: Ghanaian Nationalism, Internationalism And The Political Iconography Of Kwame Nkrumah, 1957 – 2010, Harcourt Fuller
History Faculty Publications
This article addresses the ways in which Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s prime minister and president, sought visually to propagandize the complementary, yet competing demands of nation-building, Pan-Africanism, and internationalism (most notably Cold War politics and Third World non-alignment) from 1957 to 1966. In order to illustrate the complexities inherent in juggling these three main pillars of his presidency, this article examines the iconography and symbolism of the postage stamps, and to a lesser extent, the national currencies produced during the Nkrumah era. It also notes how every regime that has succeeded Nkrumah, from the National Liberation Council that ousted him from …
