A Confluence Of Cultural And Water History With The Seli’Š Ksanka Qlispe’ Dam Formerly Named The Kerr Dam, Allisen A. Hansen
2023 Symposium
The Seli’š Ksanka Qlispe’ Dam (SKC Dam), formerly known as the Kerr Dam is the first Native American tribally owned dam in the United States. Located on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes(CSKT) of the Flathead Reservation, on the Flathead River in Montana, the dam was once considered the blight of the Whiteman’s landgrab and genocide of culture and language. Now it is a source of hope to the tribe to help its members and improve its future. Completed in 1938, it is one of two dams on the Flathead River, just south of the Flathead Lake. By following the …
History And Development Of Hanford Reservation, Washington, Kylee M. Woodworth
History And Development Of Hanford Reservation, Washington, Kylee M. Woodworth
2023 Symposium
At the height of World War II, the United States government created the Manhattan Project in a race against Germany to develop the first atomic bomb. In search of remote areas to produce the necessary plutonium, the US government established a nuclear facility at Hanford, WA, which met all the criteria needed to develop and power the site. The Columbia River was vital to powering the plant and providing much-needed cooling water for the Manhattan B Reactor. The site created plutonium for the second bomb dropped on Japan, then it continued plutonium production into the Cold War. By the 1980s, …

The History Of Spokane Falls W.T. 1871-1891, An Example Of A Colonial Built Environment, Jacob Adamson
The History Of Spokane Falls W.T. 1871-1891, An Example Of A Colonial Built Environment, Jacob Adamson
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The history of Spokane Falls's built environment within Washington Territory exemplifies the Pacific Northwest's resettlement and reconstruction in the nineteenth century. The initial benefit of Spokane Falls' geography existed within the primary natural advantage of the waterpower of the falls on the Spokane River. The secondary natural advantage in human-induced transportation networks allowed the settlement center-place status. Spokane Falls W.T. developed as center-places for the periphery's agricultural and mining commodities under a theoretical and structuralized [urban] model. An interpretation of the physical and geographical history of Spokane Falls's built environment from 1871 to 1891 occurred where the city's layout existed …
The Reel Truth: The Importance Of Historical Accuracy In Film, Kyle A. Jenkins
The Reel Truth: The Importance Of Historical Accuracy In Film, Kyle A. Jenkins
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The first goal of this project is to build a case that historical accuracy in film is an especially important criteria when teaching using film, and that educators and their students should be able to discuss any historical inaccuracies in a way that does not diminish enjoyment of the film. Aside from students, there should also be an expectation from the general populous that when a film claims to be historically accurate its inaccuracies should not be harmful to the overall conversation. Secondly, this project will attempt to build criteria for critiquing and analyzing a film based on balanced criteria …

David And Goliath: The Abdication Of A Throne, Shawn Marie Dufrene
David And Goliath: The Abdication Of A Throne, Shawn Marie Dufrene
2019 Symposium
The year 1936 would come to be known as the Year of the Three Kings. King George V died as the night was falling to a close on January 20. His oldest son, known as David in the family, became Edward VIII, and would abdicate before the year was out. During those 326 days, it would become apparent to those around him that he was not fit for the throne. His desire to marry Wallis Simpson would be the final straw. His younger brother, Albert, or “Bertie,” became George VI, and Edward became known as the Duke of Winsor. Through …

Jews: The Makers Of Early Modern Berlin, Conlan Vance
2018 Symposium
This paper will discuss how Jews fit into the economic policies of Brandenburg-Prussia in the later 16th century. From Frederick William’s decree in 1671 to allow fifty Jewish families to settle in Brandenburg-Prussia to these families and their descendants becoming immersed in the economy of Berlin through their use in courts but more so through their trading, specifically, the ways in which they traded and how they used these to free themselves from some of the constraints of German Christian society. Thusly, this will be shown by looking at Jews in Brandenburg-Prussia in the later 17th century, Jews in …

From ‘Sacred And Undeniable’ To ‘Self-Evident’: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Jefferson's Original Draft Of The Declaration Of Independence, Patrick A. Mchugh
From ‘Sacred And Undeniable’ To ‘Self-Evident’: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Jefferson's Original Draft Of The Declaration Of Independence, Patrick A. Mchugh
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This research examines Thomas Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence. Ostensibly written for the simple purpose of justifying the American separation from Great Britain, the Declaration nevertheless utilizes persuasive techniques and narrative themes that are not necessary to the rhetorical goal of justification. Of particular interest is Jefferson’s curious choice to base his argument for independence around the theme of enslavement. In order to uncover Jefferson’s possible reasons for doing so, the original draft of the Declaration is examined using a combination of three methods of rhetorical criticism: analysis of the rhetorical situation, close textual analysis, and Dramatistic …

“A Revolution Within A Revolution:” The Quest For Women’S Liberation In Post Revolutionary Cuba, Mayra Villalobos
“A Revolution Within A Revolution:” The Quest For Women’S Liberation In Post Revolutionary Cuba, Mayra Villalobos
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Women in Cuba endured centuries of gender inequality in a nation known for its history of machismo, male domination. Cuban women expressed a desire to improve their status since 1898, when Cuba was granted its independence from Spain, and again in 1930 when a new women’s movement mobilized itself in Cuba. But only with the revolutionary regime founded by Fidel Castro in 1959 could women like Celia Sánchez, Vilma Espín, and Haydee Santamaría not only continue to advocate women’s suffrage but also pursue equality with Cuban men in the public and private sphere. This thesis examines the development of the …

To Labor As An Indian Travels: What The Spokan Indians Taught The Eells And Walkers, Early Missionaries On The Columbia Plateau, Pippin J. Rubin
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Between 1838 and 1848, two New England families interacted and lived among a small band of Spokan Indians. During their time together, both groups learned much from each other. The story of how the Eells and Walkers related to the Spokan is different from other missionary tales. Their peaceful existence and daily cultural exchanges shines a gentler light on this era of transition on the Columbia Plateau. Their story should not distract from what occurred elsewhere in the Oregon Country during the 1830s and 1840s, but its telling gives a fuller and thus a more accurate picture of what took …
