Numeracy
In this paper, we describe the process at Michigan State University whereby we have created two courses, Math 101 and 102, designed to foster numeracy and alleviate mathematics anxiety. The courses--which are not sequential--provide a means of satisfying the University's general education requirement without taking college algebra or calculus, among other options. They are context-driven and broken into modules such as "The World and Its People" and "Health and Risk." They have been highly successful thus far, with students providing positive feedback on their interest in the material and the utility they see of it in their daily lives. We …
Multimodal Transportation Planning Curriculum For Urban Planning Programs, Kristine M. Williams, Tia Claridge, Alexandria Carroll
Multimodal Transportation Planning Curriculum For Urban Planning Programs, Kristine M. Williams, Tia Claridge, Alexandria Carroll
TREC Final Reports
Integrated multimodal transportation and land use planning is critical to advancing mode choice, public health and safety, and livability objectives. Communities across the U.S. are seeking to redefine their planning process accordingly. In response, university graduate urban planning and engineering programs are beginning to address multimodal planning and sustainable transportation, but most do not yet offer a robust curriculum on these topics. To help address this need, the University of South Florida (USF), Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) developed a curriculum for a course on multimodal transportation planning and its role in advancing livability and related objectives. The course …

Collegebound: History, Outcomes And The Future Of Outdoor Orientation At The College Of Saint Benedict And Saint John's University, Tyler Thompson
Forum Lectures
Outdoor orientation programs at four-year colleges and universities have a rich history of easing student's transition into college and helping students be successful. Collegebound is the outdoor orientation program for first year or transfer students at St. Ben's and St. John's. This program itself has a rich history with almost 30 years of trips that began in 1987. Recently the program grew nearly 50% in one year alone and received its highest participation rate in its history with 63 student participants in 2015. Collegebound is more than just a wilderness trip, but rather an experience that fosters community, learning, healthy …

Ecotheraphy As A Tool For Mental Wellness, Jenna L. Matsumura
Ecotheraphy As A Tool For Mental Wellness, Jenna L. Matsumura
The Vermont Connection
Students are arriving on college campuses with more mental wellness concerns and higher rates of diagnoses than previous years. As universities explore ways to increase the programmatic efforts to address these issues, the role nature plays in regards to the human psyche is often not considered. Although universities offer outdoor education programs, the positive impact of the biosphere is relatively underutilized. In this article the author will (a) present a brief overview of the growing presence of mental illnesses on college campuses, (b) provide an introduction and critique of ecotherapy, and (c) propose the placement of house plants within university …

Higher Ed's Carbon Addiction, Mary Finley-Brook, Alex Krass
Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications
Each year higher education produces millions of metric tons of greenhouse gases (GHG). As research and study abroad programs span the globe, faculty and staff travel regularly to professional meetings. Colleges compete for prospective students and offer state-of-the-art technology, entertainment, food services, and other high-impact facilities. Universities that market a comfortable, stimulating campus in order to attract and retain talent may resist carbon budgeting, as combustion of dirty fossil fuels currently remains vital to the operation of most campus buildings, sport fields, and labs.
Universities are integral to climate science knowledge production. Nevertheless, policymakers in many academic institutions appear unaware …
