The Effects Of Learning To Learn: Nine Years Of Data From Western Michigan University, Kimberly A. Morrill
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine what effect the LTL course had on student grade point averages and graduation rates at Western Michigan University. Three hundred fifty seven undergraduate students who took the LTL class between Fall semester 1987 and Winter semester 1995 were selected as the experimental group. The LTL students were divided into categories based on whether they were Beginners, Transfers, or Re-entries. The three groups of students were matched with control subjects based on demographic variables and academic history using logistic regression. Statistics were computed on all subjects in terms of the differences between the …

Narrated Voices Of African American Women In Academe, Sharon L. Holmes
Narrated Voices Of African American Women In Academe, Sharon L. Holmes
Student Affairs Faculty Scholarship
This study was conducted to investigate the academic experiences of selected African American women faculty and administrators employed by two-year and four-year predominantly white institutions. The sample selection was purposeful, and three faculty members and two administrators agreed to participate. Each participant was interviewed on five separate occasions using an open-ended interview guide. Data analysis followed the standard inductive coding procedures articulated by Y. Lincoln and E. Guba (1985), and the constant comparative method (A. Strauss and J. Corbin, 1990) was used to generate theory in the study. The narratives of the participants provide insight into the academic experiences of …

Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.
This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
This special CLAGS newsletter goes to press exactly one month after hijackers rammed jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and aimed for a third target before being brought down in the fields of Pennsylvania. In the days immediately following the attacks, pundits, politicians and plain folks asserted that our lives in America had been changed forever. Certainly all of us at CLAGS have been stunned and shaken. Gathering for our first board meeting of the year just days later, we expressed our grief, confusion, anxieties, and fears. Like everyone, no doubt, we questioned the meaning and purpose …
