On June 10, 2021, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center released the Spring 2021 Current Term Enrollment Estimates (CTTE) report. The report provides estimated postsecondary enrollment numbers based on the Clearinghouse universe of institutions. The impact of COVID-19 related disruptions has caused higher education enrollment to fall to what the National Student Clearinghouse suggests are “new lows.” This fact sheet explores trends in higher education enrollment at Mountain West colleges during the 2020 and 2021 Spring semesters.

Ouachita Baptist University has set several enrollment records for the Fall 2021 semester, including the school’s highest total enrollment in 55 years as well as the largest freshman class, best freshman-to-sophomore retention rate and highest four-year graduation rate on record.

“Students are coming to, staying at and graduating from Ouachita in record numbers – all in the midst of a pandemic,” said Dr. Ben Sells, Ouachita president. “This reflects the great care that our faculty and staff take to create a transformational college experience, the unique campus culture students help create and the generous support of alumni, friends and churches.”

Ouachita Baptist University has reported a total spring 2021 enrollment of 1,619, a 3% increase since spring 2020, and the highest spring headcount for the university in 25 years. The increase reflects strong retention of traditional undergraduate students and new programs for non-traditional students.

The increase follows Ouachita’s fourth consecutive year of fall enrollment growth – with fall 2020 enrollment being the largest in 20 years – and also reflects a strong 94.1% fall-to-spring retention for the residential freshman class, the third-highest on record for the university since 2000-2001.
