Fostering Total Wellness Through Peer Helping: Reflections On The Smu Experiences, Gilbert Tan, Timothy Hsi Dec 2005

Fostering Total Wellness Through Peer Helping: Reflections On The Smu Experiences, Gilbert Tan, Timothy Hsi

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Peer Helping is widely implemented in Colleges and Universities in the United States and Canada. Despite the popularity of these programs, very little has been researched on peer helping in the Asian context. This paper traces the theoretical foundations of peer helping and the nascent development of a peer helping program in the Singapore Management University and how this program has developed since the beginning of 2004. The initial focus of the program was based on the model of paraprofessional student counselors assisting their fellow peers through difficult moments in their lives. Over time, the program was fine-tuned to embrace …

The Decline Of The Puerto Rican Fulltime Faculty At The City University Of New York (Cuny) From 1981-2002, Felipe Pimentel Oct 2005

The Decline Of The Puerto Rican Fulltime Faculty At The City University Of New York (Cuny) From 1981-2002, Felipe Pimentel

Policy Documents

We show in this brief how the Puerto Rican fulltime faculty at CUNY has been steadily declining while the number of Puerto Ricans earning doctorates has increased considerably since the early 1980s. This analysis intends to draw attention to this paradoxical situation by examining statistical information from dif-ferent data sources. Policy-makers at the City University have insufficiently addressed the historical underrepresentation of Puerto Rican fulltime faculty at this institution—to the point where this issue has become a serious question that needs to be thoroughly analyzed. This document includes some recommendations to increase the number of Puerto Rican fulltime faculty in …

Explicating Factors That Foster Civic Engagement Among Students, Masami Nishishiba, Hal T. Nelson, Craig Shinn

Center for Public Service Publications and Reports

This paper investigates many facets of civic engagement by analyzing how college undergraduate students conceptualize civic engagement and by examining factors that predict greater student involvement in political, social, and community affairs. We administered a survey to college students at the beginning of fall, winter, and spring terms, 2001-02.We analyzed survey responses using a structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. The analysis examines how expectations of community and political efficacy, attitudes regarding citizen control of government, and attitudes toward diversity relate to the students’ civic engagement behaviors such as monthly volunteer hours, organizational participation, advocacy, voting, direct political action, and action to …

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Cory, my daughter, accuses me of having no thoughts of my own. I was talking with Jeremy [“Cory, what do you call him? partner? significant other? boyfriend?” “Mom, I just call him Jeremy.” Alright, then.]. Jeremy asked why I was an almost pacifist. Without even breathing, I launched into Addams’s arguments for pacifism, fully attributed to her, of course. That’s when Cory accused me of having no thoughts of my own. So, if I have no thoughts of my own, inhabiting Addams’s thoughts is not a bad substitute.

Remembering how Addams viewed much of her work as interpreting American institutions …

Experiential Learning Process: Exploring Teaching And Learning Of Strategic Management Framework Through The Winter Survival Exercise, Maheshkumar P. Joshi, Elizabeth B. Davis, Ravi Kathuria, C. Ken Weidner Ii

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines an attempt to introduce experiential learning methods in a business strategy course. In organizational behavior and industrial/organizational psychology, experiential teaching methods have been so widely adopted that some authors have suggested dropping the distinction between experiential and traditional teaching. Although intuitively appealing, experiential methods have not yet become popular among professors teaching strategy to traditional-age undergraduate students. It seems that heavy reliance on case-based teaching has resulted in a lack of emphasis on experiential learning tools for strategic management. In this study, the Winter Survival Exercise was used to introduce, concisely and effectively, the strategic management framework …

Inside Umaine, Vol. 2, No. 2, Department Of Public Affairs And Marketing

General University of Maine Publications

Inside UMaine was the employee newsletter issued starting in 2005. The newsletter was published once each month during the academic year. The intent was to "complement the university's other communication vehicles, including the UMaine Today magazine, UMaine Today Online and various other online Information Services, such as the university's Web-based calendar." The newsletter took over where the Maine Perspective left off to promote professional achievement and stories about campus events and advancements.
