The Pretence Of Western Religion And Education In Nigeria: A Sociological Perspective., E. Okpilike

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The main aim of the missionary education was to reach Christianity and thus convert all those who came within the four walls of the mission house. The British colonial Missions set up norms of religious education that progressively colonized the converts. Religious education primarily meant carrying out civic duties which enabled Nigerians to adopt the Western culture at the expense of their own. Prior to the coming of Western religions and education, Nigerians were very religious and also functional in their education. They acknowledged the presence of God in whatever they did. Their religion therefore cut across their entire lives …

The State, Bureaucracy And Corruption In Nigeria, Dare Arowolo Jul 2010

The State, Bureaucracy And Corruption In Nigeria, Dare Arowolo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The transformation of societies to capitalism has introduced complexity into activities of man. Once capitalism transformed the traditional way of life, factors such as effectiveness of competition, freedom of movement and the absence of any system of social security compelled the state to assume responsibility for the protection and welfare of the individual (Jacoby, 1973:147). To help the state achieve this, it has become imperative to have a seeming standing power evolving from, but placing itself above, the society. Such power that alienates itself more and more from the society is being exercised on behalf of the state by certain …

Basic Social Values In Modern Nigerian School System, E. Okpilike

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

A careful study of current event in modern Nigerian scene, religious institutions and of course all other sectors of the society clearly show that there is an unbalanced equation as regards the input and output of societal values in the school system. It is either there is a reduction of the necessary and compulsory societal values which must be introduced and imbibed in the school system or that there is a wanton disregard, disrespect, or negligence of the excellent societal values already introduced or made available to the Nigeria school system. In these two probabilities the society receives the blame …

The 2007 General Elections In Nigeria: The Implication, Tolu Lawal, Oluwatoyin Abe

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Democracy is said to be consolidated when all parties and individuals operate freely in a competitive and transparent environment; where stakeholders are guided by the rule of law, fair play and respect for group and individual rights. In political systems that approximate the ideal of democracy, the vote and election are meaningful. Elections place some individuals in power and reject the claims of others. Elections most typically are retrospective judgments on the conduct of the person and party that has held power. Those who have given satisfaction are confirmed in the office, those who are held responsible for the poor …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Privatisation has become the current wave moving across both developing and developed nations all over the world. This is so in order to promote efficient allocation and management of resources. In Nigeria, like most other developing countries, the ownership and control of key public utilities have virtually been the responsibility of the government since independence in 1960. The case for government control of public utilities, such as electricity, telecommunication, gas, water supply and air transportation is based on the argument that basic goods and services need to be provided to the citizenry at affordable prices, and also that government needs …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The lecture method is probably the most prevalent and only method some university lecturers often employ in the training programs leading to the preparation of Nigerian graduates. In recent times the quality of graduates in Nigeria has necessitated a second look at this predominant method of preparation. Since the lecture method is predominantly teacher – centered and mostly leaves the learners as passive participants, only to take notes and probably ask questions after the lecture delivery if and when time permits, the need has arisen to look for alternative ways of graduates’ preparation that will be all inclusive. There is …

The education sector has not enjoyed a fair share of the total recurrent and capital expenditure of the federal Government, despite the 26% recommended by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).The high priority accorded education according to Longe (1985), has partly been due to the view of education as an investment.

ICT is one of the various factors that are drastically influencing occupational success especially in the educational sector. Adamu (2004) sees ICT as a set of technological tools and resources used to communicate and create, disseminate, to store and manage information. The information dissemination is easily possible through computer technologies. Markauskaite (2006) opines that the introduction of computer technology into teaching and learning is a giant stride towards improving the quality of education. …

Performance-Reward Based For Teachers: Implications For Educational Outcomes In Nigerian Secondary Schools, Samuel Oyebolu, K.O. Muraina

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Performance-related pay for teachers is being introduced in many countries, amidst much controversy and opposition from teachers and unions alike (Denver, 2006; and Houston, 2006). The rationale for these programmes is the notion that incentive pay may motivate teachers to improve their performance. For example, in early December 2000, the Israeli Ministry of Education unveiled a new teachers’ bonus experiment in forty-nine Israeli high schools. The main feature of the programme was an individual performance bonus paid to teachers on the basis of their own students’ achievements. The experiment included all English, Hebrew, Arabic, and Mathematics teachers who taught classes …

Influence Of Resources Allocation In Education On Secondary School Students’ Outcome In Nigeria., Olabanji Obadara, Abayomi Alaka

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

School finance is concerned with the mobilization and allocation of resources to schools. School finance issues are of paramount concern to all levels of educational system both at federal, state, and local government level. The child’s future as well as the future of a society in general, depends largely on the quality of the educational system. The high expectation of the society for students and teachers to perform at higher levels, and for schools to guarantee the success of all students, the question of how best to support the expectation through effective and efficient allocation resources becomes even more critical.

Relationship Between Principals And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Principals’ Performance Of Staff Development And Students Personnel In Secondary Schools, Delta Central Senatorial District, Nigeria, E.D. Nakpodia

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The success of any organisation solely depends upon the quality and efficiency of its staff personnel , who perform the functions necessary for the fulfilment of stated goals and objectives. These assumptions is as applicable to the school system as it is to any organisation involving human efforts. The extent to which the quality of education succeeds will depend strictly upon the quality of the personnel engaged in the educational process, and upon the effectiveness with which they carry out individual and group responsibilities. (Nakpodia, 2006)

It is bound with the efficiency of learning and improvement of the teaching/ learning services. Quality control of Basic Education centers is closely associated with a vital component of education (Monitoring & Evaluation). Today, ‘Quality Control’ is used more or less as a synonym for supervision or inspection which is within the comprehension of the wider segment of the educated publics. Instructional supervision in Nigeria began as a process of external inspection. In the 18th century, supervision was characterized by inspection …

Book Review: Challenges Of Sustainable Democracy In Nigeria. Ibadan: John Archer, Segun Oshewolo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Ojo’s edited book accommodates brilliant essays that focus analytically on the hurdles to Nigeria’s democratization process. The book takes the readers into an interesting, but academically cogent, theme, Nigeria’s democratization process: the odds and socio-politically expedient coping strategies. The foreword, excellently written by a Nigerian professor of political science, J. A.A. Ayoade, will no doubt ignite readers’ interest in the book. Apart from projecting Nigeria as a continental and global force, which necessarily elicits great enthusiasm from democracy observers locally and internationally, it also, precisely and concisely, chronicles Nigeria’s tortuous march to democratization. In the preface of this twenty-five chapter …

Business instruction is organized to prepare individuals for occupations in administrative office systems, accounting and finance, management, and computer information systems. It is the enterprise of education directed at the study and research of the field of business. It includes secondary education and higher education or university education, with the greatest activity in the latter. It is often or almost always oriented toward preparing students for the practice of an …

The Language Policy And Practice Of Tanzania And Singapore: What Lessons For Nigeria, Africa., Olufunson Fasanami Jan 2010

The Language Policy And Practice Of Tanzania And Singapore: What Lessons For Nigeria, Africa., Olufunson Fasanami

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Language makes a people. If a language is lost, the identity of the race is lost. Language is a universal concept and there is no society in the world where language is not used for communication. Many linguists have defined language as a means of communicating, ideas, thoughts, emotions and information, among others. The human race is imbued with the gift of verbal language, apparently, intelligible language for communication. There are other types of communication like the signs, symbols, gesticulations, braille for the blind and other non verbal communication media.

A Measure Of Students’ Connectedness In Tertiary Institutions In Anambra State Of Nigeria, Ada Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christi Odimegwu

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The Nigerian higher education has been accused of performing below expectation when judged from both internal and global benchmarks of quality of output, peaceful co-existence on campus, fair conduct of examination, amongst others. The nature of higher education is such that its students are seen by members of campus community as adults who have attained the age of taking full responsibility of their behaviours and students on their part see themselves as those set free from the encumbrances of family control and influences. Indeed the campus environment is one perceived as “everyman to himself”. Students’ relationship with teachers, fellow students, …

Importance Of Proper Dressing In Modern Living In Nigeria, D.O. Arubayi Jan 2010

Importance Of Proper Dressing In Modern Living In Nigeria, D.O. Arubayi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Dressing is an act of putting on clothes and usually a means of expressing our individuality. Thompson (2005) citing Kaiser (1997) opined that dressing is the total arrangement of all outward detectable modification of the body and all material objects added to it. The implication of this is that dressing which is an aspect of clothing is the external covering put on the body for different purposes. The way an individual dresses is a tangible expression of an individual’s unique value system. Arubayi (2004), enumerated the followings as reasons why people wear clothes: to protect, to cover their nakedness, to …

Perceived Efficacy Of Marriage Counseling In Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study Of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijebu Ode, J.T.B. Oluwatimilehin

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It has long been recognized that the major causes of difficulties of students are anxieties and psychological stresses (Adeyemo, 2000; Owuamanam, 2000; and Akinleye, 2003). According to Adeyemo (2000), concern over studies, unusual physical complaint and difficulties with interpersonal relationship have often led to successful or attempted suicide among students. Students in Nigeria tertiary institutions have a great need for guidance and counseling. This assertion is largely informed by the cultural conflict between the Western and African values whereby students are engaged in developing both occupational and social identities. This seems to support the view of Owuamanam (2000)who reported that …

The Commercialisation Of Knowledge Production Among Students Of The University Of Port Harcourt, Nigeria :The Praxis And Provisos., G.G. Kpee, L.E.S. Kaegon

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In recent time, there had been an urgent need for the understanding of and a planned framework for the introduction of the commercialization of knowledge production concept in our universities. Many dimensions to this need had been attempted. This include drawing up new course descriptions or revising the mix of the course subject portfolio. However, it is now becomes very obvious that such development requires a good deal more than just looking into specific course contents, or setting up an entrepreneurial centre and or introducing a course in entrepreneurial education as announced by Baridam (2009) during the 25th Convocation Ceremony …

Women’S Access To Senior Management Positions In The University Of Abuja – Nigeria, Isaiah Ilo Jan 2010

Women’S Access To Senior Management Positions In The University Of Abuja – Nigeria, Isaiah Ilo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Most of the research on women in higher education management has been conducted in the Western setting, particularly in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. Similar studies have also been done in Asia, with reference to Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and in a few cases in Africa, with reference to South Africa and Kenya. Little has been done on the subject in Nigeria. In one of such works on a related issue, Oloruntoba & Ajayi (2006) used data on the research outputs of 219 academics in three Nigerian agricultural universities to compare gender with research attainment. The findings …
