Transforming Technology Management Courses For Web Delivery, Wayne Wakeland

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores the ramifications of using web technology in teaching technology management courses, computer-based modeling and simulation courses in particular. The emphasis is on what works, but disappointments are also mentioned. Web technology is being used to supplant lectures with self-paced materials and lab exercises that enable students to take courses remotely and asynchronously. Web-based exams are also discussed.

Relationships Among Long -Term Debt, Current Fund Revenues And Expenditures, And Endowment Value At Public Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Michael Lee Stump Jan 2001

Relationships Among Long -Term Debt, Current Fund Revenues And Expenditures, And Endowment Value At Public Four-Year Colleges And Universities, Michael Lee Stump

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study is to determine what relationships exist among current fund revenues, current fund expenditures, long-term debt, and endowment value for public four-year colleges and universities, for fiscal years 1992 through 1997. An important objective of the study is to "let the data speak for itself." The research questions focused on trends among the four variables; whether long-term debt displaced some portion of current fund revenue and whether endowment value influenced this relationship; whether institutions incurred more debt when their revenues and endowment values have been increasing; and whether revenues failed to keep pace with institutions' needs …

Student Debt And Debt Burden Of Graduate And First Professional Students: A National And Institutional Analysis, Daina Paupe Henry Jan 2001

Student Debt And Debt Burden Of Graduate And First Professional Students: A National And Institutional Analysis, Daina Paupe Henry

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this research was to assess the short-term debt burden of graduate education for those students needing to acquire loans. Building on and refining the work of Leslie and Brinkman, and Keynes (but narrowing the analysis to post-baccalaureates) an analysis of amount of student debt and debt burden (the proportion of debt payments to income) was conducted. Using institutional and NPSAS data, debt was analyzed by student level (i.e. masters, doctoral, first-professional) and program of study (business, education, law, physical sciences, social sciences, and other). Student loan debt was combined with average consumer debt to assess total debt …

The Relationship Between Conceptual Level And Moral Development Of Substance Abuse Prevention Professionals Working In Higher Education And Their Comprehensiveness Of Programming, Mary Katherine Crozier Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Conceptual Level And Moral Development Of Substance Abuse Prevention Professionals Working In Higher Education And Their Comprehensiveness Of Programming, Mary Katherine Crozier

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are prevalent on American college and university campuses. The higher education literature is replete with research on prevalence rates (Presley, Meilman, and Cashin, 1998; Wechsler, Lee, Kuo, and Lee, 2000), substance abuse prevention theories (Gonzales, 1994), history of substance abuse prevention (O'Bryan and Daughtery, 1992), and descriptions of prevention programming (anderson and Milgram, 1996; Mills-Novoa, 1994). There is, however, little research on the substance abuse prevention professionals who are charged with developing and offering prevention programming in higher education.;This study is one of the first to examine the substance abuse prevention professional in higher education. …

Post Doi Moi Urban Higher Education In The Socialist Republic Of Vietnam: The Case Of Hong Duc University, Jeanne Beth Natali Jan 2001

Post Doi Moi Urban Higher Education In The Socialist Republic Of Vietnam: The Case Of Hong Duc University, Jeanne Beth Natali

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is experiencing unprecedented peace and prosperity. Although Vietnam's war-damaged economy continued to decline for ten years after hostilities ended in 1975, everything changed in 1986 when doi moi, a moderate economic reform program, was introduced. Doi moi put enormous stress on higher education, whose function in the past had been to train workers for the state sector. Suddenly, higher education had to respond to the changing needs of Vietnamese society.

A 1992 educational sector study found that higher education was irrelevant to the needs of the transitional Vietnamese society. Universities were too small and …

Prototype Development For A Leak-Preventive Toilet Flush System- An Met Senior Design (Capstone) Project, Cheng Y. Lin Jan 2001

Prototype Development For A Leak-Preventive Toilet Flush System- An Met Senior Design (Capstone) Project, Cheng Y. Lin

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

A senior design (Capstone) project for three mechanical engineering technology students at Old Dominion University is described. A prototype design is presented to perform the functional test of a leak-preventive toilet system. There are two major leaks in the toilet water tank. In the first case, leaking occurs when the seal in the water tank becomes aged. The leak is very easy to detect visually, since the outside of the tank and the floor becomes wet. In the second case, leak occurs when the flapper valve can't complete shut off the water, due to corrosion or damage of the rubber …

Looking Back, Looking Ahead, Alisa Solomon Jan 2001

Looking Back, Looking Ahead, Alisa Solomon

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Vivien Ng said something at a roundtable discussion CLAGS hosted in October that has been ringing in my ears ever since. The roundtable had brought together a range of Women's Studies and LGTBQ Studies scholars, writers and teachers, to consider what lessons LGTBQ Studies might draw from its older sister as the younger field becomes further institutionalized at universities and colleges across the country. Was feminism still a motive force? we wondered. Did that field somehow speak to and from a vibrant movement, or at least to and from women's communities? Was it still accountable to them in some way? …

The Relationship Between Academic Self-Concept And The Achievement Expectancies On The Academic Achievement And Persistence Rate Of African-American Freshmen Students, Ira Falls Iii Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Academic Self-Concept And The Achievement Expectancies On The Academic Achievement And Persistence Rate Of African-American Freshmen Students, Ira Falls Iii

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This study addressed the use of certain noncognitive variables and their relationship to the academic achievement and persistence rate of African-American freshmen students attending a large, predominately white institution. Academic achievement was defined as a student's cumulative college grade point average and cumulative credits earned at the end of the freshmen year of study. Persistence rate was defined as the number of freshmen who enrolled compared to the percentage of those who re-enrolled for the Fall semester of their sophomore year. Moreover, the purpose of this study was to identify selected variables that are associated with increased African-American academic achievement …

The Validation Of A Detailed Strategic Planning Process Model For The Implementation Of Distance Education In Higher Education, Kenneth Phillip Pisel Jr. Jan 2001

The Validation Of A Detailed Strategic Planning Process Model For The Implementation Of Distance Education In Higher Education, Kenneth Phillip Pisel Jr.

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to develop, refine, and validate a model of the strategic planning process for distance education. To achieve this end, the informed opinion from a population of peer-nominated experts was solicited over three rounds of iterative Delphi questionnaires administered via electronic mail. Using descriptive statistics to analyze central tendency and variation, the straw model was refined into a validated model by the final Delphi round. In developing this model, the study answered specific questions about the following: (1) The impact of volatile technological change on a strategic distance education plan. (2) The optimum size and …
