South Bend, the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, is a city with a population of slightly more than 100,000. Located about 100 miles from Chicago, it serves many of the educational, financial and health care needs of a five county metropolitan area of over 700,000 people. South Bend and its sister city, Mishawaka, are served by four general hospitals. The two largest each have about 40 percent of the available beds in the community.
