An Assessment Of The Effects Of Desertification In Yobe State, Nigeria, Jibril Musa Phd

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria

Desertification is one of the most serious environmental and socio-economic problems of our time. Desertification describes circumstances of land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions resulting from the climatic variation and human activities. The fundamental goal of this thesis was to assess the effects of desertification in Yobe State, Nigeria. The present threat of desertification in the sahel has reached an alarming stage where crops cultivation and animal rearing/grazing are no more productive, soil has lost its nutrient/fertility, various infrastructure had given way because of windstorm from the neighbouring Niger Republic and sand dunes had taken over. The …

Collaborative Tourism Planning In Ireland: Tokenistic Consultation And The Politics Of Participation, Noel Healy Nov 2012

Collaborative Tourism Planning In Ireland: Tokenistic Consultation And The Politics Of Participation, Noel Healy

Noel Healy

This article explores the political structures that shape Irish tourism development and decision-making. Drawing on two controversial cases of tourism development in the West of Ireland—Mullaghmore and the Cliffs of Moher—this article illustrates how a limited consultation approach dominated by short-termism and political expediency has hitherto resisted any intentions among local communities and sustainability advocates to increase public participation in tourism planning. A comparison of these two cases reveals how the particularities of the Irish political system and the prevalence of a producer-orientated development paradigm combined to reinforce an exclusionary approach to tourism planning. This was further compounded by the …

Potential Of Spatial Analysis Of Housing Submarkets In Understanding Residential Segregation, Sungsoon Hwang Nov 2012

Potential Of Spatial Analysis Of Housing Submarkets In Understanding Residential Segregation, Sungsoon Hwang

Sungsoon Hwang

Residential segregation has important implications for social mobility, namely through achievement gap by neighborhoods. The endeavor to unravel processes leading to residential segregation can benefit from empirical analysis of housing submarkets. This paper discusses how spatial analysis of housing submarkets might be useful in exploring patterns and processes of residential segregation. As a case study, housing submarkets in St. Louis and Cincinnati are empirically delineated using fuzzy clustering, and differences in spatial pattern of residential segregation in these two metropoiltan areas are discussed.

Population Access To Waste Collection Services: Urban Vs Rural Areas In Romania,, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

This paper aims a comparative analysis at county level concerning urban and rural population access to sanitation services in the context of EU accession. Partially coverage of population to such services contributes to illegal dumping of waste generated and uncollected.Furthermore, waste management facilities are inappropriate, particularly in small cities or rural areas. Comparative analysis of urban vs. rural population served by waste collection services using thematic cartography highlights on the one hand the existing disparities within a county and on the other hand reflects the regional disparities across Romania. The demographic, socioeconomic and geographic differentiations between urban and rural areas amplify …

Improper Household Waste Disposal In Rural Territory.Case Study: Neamt County, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Open dumping of waste generated and uncollected is the most common option in waste management schemes from rural areas. Lack of sanitation services or rudimentary waste management systems favored this practice. This paper proposes a method to estimate the amounts of household waste uncontrolled disposed at local administrative unit level (commune) for 2003 and 2010. Based on estimating the amounts of waste generated and uncollected are introduced new indicators in the quantitative analysis taking into account the household waste composition, individual composting of biodegradable waste or recyclable waste from households for a more proper assessment of waste disposed. Usually household …

The Law Of The Sea Convention, The Eastern Mediterranean, And Clinton’S Testimony, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

Since the U.S. is still the world’s sole superpower, its participation in international conventions is very important for both itself and the better function and implementation of the various International Legal Frameworks. As such, a possible future ratification of the [Law of the Sea] Convention by the U.S. would have broad politico-legal implications for other states and areas in the world, where the Treaty has not been signed or ratified and maritime disputes are in place. One such region is the Eastern Mediterranean. This paper firstly looks at the development of the Law of the Sea, the contested provisions of …

Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai Sep 2012

Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Municipal waste management in the last two decades has become a global environmental priority in the context of increasing amounts of waste generated due to the development of a mass consumer society. Various issues of waste management , territorial and temporal variability, spatial analysis of treatment or disposal facilities, systemic implications on the environment, the harmonization of international policy at national, regional and local level are solid arguments for studying this field by geography. Mostly technical or economic studies, lacking a vision of territory are supplemented in the conceptual and methodological level by geographers. This paper performed on the one …

Is Dismissing The Precautionary Principle The Manly Thing To Do? Gender And The Economics Of Climate Change, Julie Nelson Sep 2012

Is Dismissing The Precautionary Principle The Manly Thing To Do? Gender And The Economics Of Climate Change, Julie Nelson

Julie A. Nelson

Many public debates about climate change now focus on the economic "costs" of taking action. When called on to advise about these, many leading mainstream economists downplay the need for care and caution on climate issues, forecasting a future with infinitely continued economic growth. This essay highlights the roles of binary metaphors and cultural archetypes in creating the highly gendered, sexist, and age-ist attitudes that underlie this dominant advice. Gung-ho economic growth advocates aspire to the role of The Hero, rejecting the conservatism of The Old Wife. But in a world that is not actually as safe and predictable as …

Theorizing Scale In Critical Place-Name Studies, Joshua Hagen Aug 2012

Theorizing Scale In Critical Place-Name Studies, Joshua Hagen

Joshua Hagen

Building on broader developments in critical social theory, geographers have made significant strides in explicating the assumptions, motivations, and values involved in place naming. This has led to an emphasis on understanding the processes involved in the inscription, subversion, and revision of place names. Despite the increasingly sophisticated approaches found in place-name studies, the field of toponymy occupies a relatively minor position in academic geography. There are varied and complex reasons for this marginality, but perhaps the most salient critique is that place-name research has been slow to engage broader developments in geographic and social theory.

Historic Preservation In Nazi Germany : Place, Memory, And Nationalism, Joshua Hagen Aug 2012

Historic Preservation In Nazi Germany : Place, Memory, And Nationalism, Joshua Hagen

Joshua Hagen

While numerous studies have examined the post-war contestation surrounding commemorative sites associated with the legacy of Nazi Germany, relatively little attention has been dedicated to the ways in which the Nazi regime itself sought to create places of memory congruent with the movement's political and cultural goals. Indeed, party leaders sponsored a variety of disparate, and at times contradictory, programs to re-orientate some of Germany's most prominent historic places to better serve the needs of the regime. To expand our understanding of this process, this article examines the practice and rhetoric of historic preservation in Bavaria during the Nazi period …

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin Aug 2012

Trains Through The Plains The Great Plains Landscape Of Victorian Women Travelers, Karen M. Morin

Karen M. Morin

The young British novelist Iza Hardy, during her travels to America in 1881-83, anticipated the American West as terra incagnitae, a place completely beyond civilization. Like many other British tourists to America in the late nineteenth century, Hardy traveled extensively throughout the East Coast and South, and took a transcontinental journey to the Pacific Coast by train (Fig. O. Out of her American travels Hardy produced Between Two Oceans: Or, Sketches of American Travel (1884) and a book about Florida. Hardy's coverage of the western portion of her American journey followed the transect the railroad did, with chapters of …

Protected Area Governance Conflicts In Ireland - Mending Poor Relations And New Modes Of Governance, Noel Healy Jul 2012

Protected Area Governance Conflicts In Ireland - Mending Poor Relations And New Modes Of Governance, Noel Healy

Noel Healy

Protected area governance concerns the interactions among structures, processes and traditions that determine how power is exercised, how decisions are taken and how citizens or stakeholders have their say (Graham et al., 2003). Over the last few decades, protected area governance has moved away from being a predominantly state-based ‘top-down’ model to a multi-level system under which powers and responsibilities are difused among a diversity of national and local government actors, civil society organisations and local communities management (Lockwood, 2010). Although the 1990s saw the emergence and increasing emphasis on the role of partnerships and collaboration as important elements in …

Η Τουρκική Περιφερειακή Πολιτική Ασφάλειας Σε Νέο Γεωπολιτικό Περιβάλλον, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

Disparities In Municipal Waste Management Across Eu-27. A Geographical Approach, Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol May 2012

Disparities In Municipal Waste Management Across Eu-27. A Geographical Approach, Florin C. Mihai, Liviu Apostol

Florin C MIHAI

Inadequate waste management leads to many environmental issues and the adoption of an efficient and sustainable waste management has become a priority objective of the EU. However, besides the demographic factors, the various socio-economic and geographical conditions of this complex space lead to major disparities in municipal waste management between North and South, East and West. This paper aims to do a spatial-temporal analysis of the Eurostat indicators using ascending hierarchical cluster analysis that divides the member states into five typological classes. The resulted maps highlight territorial disparities among Member States on municipal waste management and also reveal the evolution …
