Cross-Well Radar. Ii: Comparison And Experimental Validation Of Modeling Channel Transfer Function, Arvin Farid, Sophia Zhan, Akram Alshawabkeh, Carey Rappaport
Akram N. Alshawabkeh
Close agreement between theory and experiment is critical for adequate understanding and implementation of the cross-well radar (otherwise known as cross-borehole ground penetrating radar) technique, mentioned in a previous paper by the authors. Comparison of experimental results to simulation using a half-space dyadic Green’s function in the frequency domain requires development of transfer functions to transform the experimental data into a compatible form. A channel transfer function (CTF) was developed to avoid having to model the transmitting and receiving characteristics of the antennas. The CTF considers electromagnetic wave propagation through the intervening media only (soil in this case) and hence …
Historic Preservation In Nazi Germany : Place, Memory, And Nationalism, Joshua Hagen
Historic Preservation In Nazi Germany : Place, Memory, And Nationalism, Joshua Hagen
Joshua Hagen
While numerous studies have examined the post-war contestation surrounding commemorative sites associated with the legacy of Nazi Germany, relatively little attention has been dedicated to the ways in which the Nazi regime itself sought to create places of memory congruent with the movement's political and cultural goals. Indeed, party leaders sponsored a variety of disparate, and at times contradictory, programs to re-orientate some of Germany's most prominent historic places to better serve the needs of the regime. To expand our understanding of this process, this article examines the practice and rhetoric of historic preservation in Bavaria during the Nazi period …

Channel Instability In A Braided Sand Bed River, William Graf
Channel Instability In A Braided Sand Bed River, William Graf
William L. Graf
The Gila River of central Arizona is representative of braided, sand bed rivers in alluvial valleys that have inherent unstable behavior and destructive channel migration. The 112-year record of channel conditions along a portion of the Gila River provides data for the construction of locational probability maps for main flow channels. Zones of stability and hazardous instability alternate with each other at 3.2 km (2 mi) intervals. During the past century the overall sinuosity of the main flow channel has remained close to 1.18, despite numerous changes in actual location. Spatial and temporal variation of sinuosity have occurred in subreaches …
Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William Graf
Dam Nation: A Geographic Census Of American Dams And Their Large-Scale Hydrologic Impacts, William Graf
William L. Graf
Newly available data indicate that darns fragment the fluvial system of the continental United States and that their impact on river discharge is several times greater than impacts deemed likely as a result of global climate change. The 75,000 dams in the continental United States are capable of storing a volume of water almost equaling one year's mean runoff, but there is considerable geographic variation in potential surface water impacts. In some western mountain and plains regions, darns can store more than 3 year's runoff, while in the Northeast and Northwest, storage is as little as 25% of the annual …
The Effect Of Dam Closure On Downstream Rapids, William Graf
The Effect Of Dam Closure On Downstream Rapids, William Graf
William L. Graf
The force of flowing water and the resistance of the largest boulder provide a means of evaluation of the stability of rapids in canyon rivers. Field measurements and calculations show that the closure of Flaming Gorge Dam, Utah, has had a significant effect on the stability of rapids in the canyons of the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument 68 km (42 mi) downstream from the dam. The reduction in peak flows by the dam has limited the competence of the river to move boulders deposited in the main channel by tributary processes, landslides, and prehistoric floods. Before the dam …
‘We’Re Just Like The Irish’: Narratives Of Assimilation, Belonging, And Citizenship Among Arab American Activists, Caroline Nagel, Lynn Staeheli
‘We’Re Just Like The Irish’: Narratives Of Assimilation, Belonging, And Citizenship Among Arab American Activists, Caroline Nagel, Lynn Staeheli
Caroline R. Nagel
This paper examines narratives of assimilation and belonging as activists attempt to position Arab-Americans as citizens and full members of the American polity. In interviews with activists, the experience of the Irish as immigrants and citizens was often invoked as the paradigmatic example of how immigrants are incorporated as citizens—an example that activists promoted as one that Arabs would follow. By invoking the Irish experience, activists hope to remind Americans that immigration history is not one of effortless assimilation, but is rather characterized by systematic exclusion and marginalization. In so doing, they articulate narratives of assimilation and belonging that draw …
