Aneuploidy, or abnormal number of chromosomes in a haploid set, in XY/XX organisms has consequences that can impede physical and cognitive development. To prevent aneuploidy, cellular division relies on the correct position of paired chromosomes and subsequent segregation in the meiotic program. If connections between paired chromosomes sever or errors in chromosome contraction towards spindle poles arise, aneuploidy occurs. Many arthropod species have chromosomes that naturally do not pair, or that pair differently than typical autosomes. Through the evaluation of such systems, novel insights into chromosomal coordination and positioning may be revealed. The objective of this study is twofold: (1) …

Chasmanthium latifolium (Michx.) Yates (Poaceae) is a loosely colonial, rhizomatous, perennial grass species that lives in riparian habitats, making it fittingly referred to as river oats. Native to the southern Midwest and the eastern half of the United States, C. latifolium reaches the northeastern edge of its range in Pennsylvania. Within Pennsylvania, eleven extant C. latifolium populations are found along four waterways: the Monongahela River, the Susquehanna River, and two tributaries to the Susquehanna River. This limited state distribution exhibits an east-west disjunct distribution, where western populations are largely separated from eastern populations with one centrally located population. Floodplain aquifer systems are diverse and heterogenous ecosystems that serve many ecological functions, including habitat provision to a range of groundwater species. The Flathead River system of northwestern Montana is home to many floodplain aquifers of great ecological importance to the region. The basic biology, population structure, and dispersal patterns of obligate groundwater organisms that reside within the aquifers of the Flathead are still largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the population structure of one such taxon, an undescribed species of the amphipod genus Stygobromus.
