Proust, born some fifteen years after Freud; was equally fascinated with the potential for the unconscious mind. He was obsessed by the desire to overcome the destructive force of Time and assure tor himself a place in eternity. He wanted to project himself into the future by creating a work of art, for he believed that Art, alone surpassed Time. His work of art would be a novel, but rather than simply recounting past experiences, he sought to actually bring them to life again by evoking in the reader the same sensations he experienced. Nonsense literature and nonsense poetry have provided release from the shackles of logic for centuries. But the greatest masters of English nonsense are Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.

It is my intention in this study to examine Montesquieu’s treatment of women in his works. I have concentrated on his two major works Lettres Persanes (1721) and De l’Esprit des Lois (1748) not only because they are considered his best works, but also because, after reading his other writings that deal with women, I think that the ideas expresed in these two works are clearly representative of his thoughts in general about women.
