My thesis exhibition investigates concepts of memory and memorial. These are fueled by feelings of yearning, longing, and nostalgia. We allow memories to linger. I believe we try to strengthen these memories, encase them and tuck them away deep in our minds. These memories create in our psyche psychological memorials. Like physical memorials, our memories too deteriorate and crumble over time. We fill in the gaps to the point where it is unknown just how true these memories are. Color Journal consists of a collection of works, which depict landscapes and cityscapes with an underlining consciousness of the interrelationship between humans and their environment. Over the ages, the relationship changes through the history of human civilization. In the current age, nature seems to suffer a losing battle. Therefore, there is a personal nostalgic sentiment to emphasize the beauty of our natural environment and the importance of the balance of the relationship. The focus of my studio work is an exploration of my interest in the physical and mental dynamics that take place within the confines of my home versus the world outside. The home, spatial arrangements (architecture, passageways), maritime disasters, and the ambiguity of abstract expressionism all have an identifiable impact on my images. Abstraction allows me to maintain a visual ambiguity that often reflects the ambiguity of the real-life situations on which they are based. This thesis is based on the accumulation of old objects found or given to me within the past year. Many are everyday general items that are considered to no longer have a purpose because they are now rusty, used and worn. This thesis is about the search to uncover my infatuation for these objects, as well as, transmit to the audience their aesthetic beauty that generates a similar appreciation.
