Literature As A Pathway To Steam Careers, Michelle Mohrweis
Literature As A Pathway To Steam Careers, Michelle Mohrweis
The STEAM Journal
In this piece, I discuss the way STEAM focused literature can help guide students into the world of STEAM. Through books, kids can see themselves doing STEAM focused careers, helping to make it more accessible even to groups still underrepresented in many technical fields. STEAM in children’s literature can also help students navigate important skills, such as the design process and learning how to have a growth mindset.

Their one-way road trip had started the day before when they left their home in San Bernardino for the final time. Paisley was afraid of moving away from the city she grew up in, but not for the same reasons many children her age would be. . So, her social life wasn’t her primary concern when it came time to abandon her home. Instead, she was afraid to leave San Bernardino because she had memorized all the perfect bike routes within a thirty-mile radius. On the other, the fear that their new home would have insufficient routes and roads compared …

Diamond Line Undergraduate Literary Magazine
In following up the premier issue of The Diamond Line, the fall 2020 editorial staff had big shoes to fill. We took on the challenge of creating something that would uphold the framework of Issue 1 while simultaneously branching out from its margins.
Like the editors before us, we had a vision, but ours took a new form — bright, warm colors. Sunset colors. Moons. Playful lines. Isolation and introspection. A stroll through an art gallery. A coming-of-age story bound between two groovy orange bookends. While Issue 2 does not have an overarching theme, we chose the cover art, “Pandemic …

Honors Theses
Westbound is a twenty-five chapter novella that aims to demonstrate ways in which creative writers can use climate fiction to overcome psychological barriers to act on climate change. The narrative follows Cassie, a character loosely based on a relative of its author, living in a future version of the United States that has been ravaged by climate change and its indirect consequences.
In the novella, Cassie and her mother Nia set out on a cross-country road trip as a climate disaster looms. The narrative explores their relationship and that with Cassie’s estranged father, the implications of projected ecological changes under …

Master’s Theses and Projects
For my Master’s Thesis project, I will be writing an original piece of realistic fiction inspired by the “dirty realism” literary movement of the 20th century. This piece of fiction, at the end of these two semesters, will resemble a novella in length and style while focusing on execution and maintenance of profluence as an element of narrative craft. My first semester will be spent conducting topical research on female urban youth and modern sex work in the form of short interviews and field research, closely reading some relevant contemporary “dirty realism” pieces of fiction, and using craft-based handbooks to …

Billion-Dollar Bride: Book 1—Godric's Academy For Young Ladies, Kaylin N. Stickley
MSU Graduate Theses
This thesis contains the first five chapters of a young adult romance novel featuring a young woman named Theadosia Lee. The plot is heavily influenced by Cinderella, and the biblical braiding technique is heavily influenced by that of Kiera Cass and C. S. Lewis. The piece was inspired by my desire to create more young adult romance novels that contain the biblical values that are sorely lacking in most modern young adult literature. I seek to write a love story that is based on mutual respect, a strong foundation of friendship, and an intentional decision to avoid sexual activities …
Delivering Extinction, Tatum Cordy
Delivering Extinction, Tatum Cordy
Honors College Theses
Living during a human extinction is something no one is prepared for. No one thought humans would last this long. Even the sun dies eventually. A child’s drawing with a dripping smile. Sun rays heating soil into dust, melting metals, and large pine trees would light like matches. Smoke would rise into the air blocking out everything but the fires taking over the once livable landscape of Earth. Then, it would be over. The sun would explode. Simple and quick, painless for the few who wouldn’t try to resist their demise. Too bad humans were a few million years early. …

Kind King Or Tyrannical Ruler? An Analysis Of Hilary Mantel’S Henry Viii In Wolf Hall And Bringing Up The Bodies, Amanda S. Nicholson
Kind King Or Tyrannical Ruler? An Analysis Of Hilary Mantel’S Henry Viii In Wolf Hall And Bringing Up The Bodies, Amanda S. Nicholson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) served as King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. A melancholic character, Henry was known for his many marriages, his temper, his bouts of tyranny, and his break with the Catholic Church. Most authors, even those writing contemporary accounts, portray Henry as a villain. Hilary Mantel paints Henry differently. In Wolf Hall and Bringing up the Bodies, the King is as he has always been; argumentative, sardonic, and excessive. However, Mantel chooses to augment these parts of his character with some of his better traits, giving the …

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Lanza Tu Pelo”: Storytelling In A Transcultural, Translanguaging Dialogic Exchange, Erin E. Flynn
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this study, we examined story circles to understand how the small‐group activity supports and shapes the storytelling of young students in multicultural, multilingual preschool classrooms. Through a representative example, we show how language development unfolds in the context of a transcultural and translanguaging dialogic exchange of stories. We describe features of increasing linguistic complexity present in students’ storytelling as they established affinity‐affirming connections over ideas, shared ways of languaging, and shared ways of storytelling. By examining changes in one student’s storytelling in the context of a mixed‐language story circle group, we offer insights into both language development and features …

Children Of The Corn, Quetzali Lopez
First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
“Child of the Corn” was a short script inspired by my family’s taqueria in Chicago. The story is intended to be a light comedy, but still addresses the issues of gentrification happening in cultural communities. Xiomara and her little brother, Abel, are working at their family’s restaurant when they discover a new yuppie taco joint has opened up across the street. While Abel is excited to scope out the competition, Xiomara is concerned about how can affect her family’s work.

Nightworld, Susan Renee Falco
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nightworld is a collection of short and flash fiction pieces exploring cycles of violence and redemption. Variations in the length and style are meant to create a formally experimental continuation of the Southern Gothic tradition. Mythic heroes from Robert Johnson to Shirley Temple populate this fictional landscape of musicians, acrobats, reverends, stray children, and wild animals. Predatory wildlife reflects on the inherent violence in biology. The title story follows a pair of musicians on a night when a near fatal overdose fails to provide a catalyst for change. In Nightworld, the characters choose the myth of the Self Destructive …

The Goose

Skeletons In My Closet: A Collection Of Personal Essays And Short Fiction, Macey Howell
Skeletons In My Closet: A Collection Of Personal Essays And Short Fiction, Macey Howell
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
My thesis will be a collection of personal essays and short fiction centered on examining the ties between fashion and identity and told through a Gothic literary tradition. I seek to explore my identity by examining my personal style using the mode of the Gothic. Through this project, I will encapsulate my sense of style, and therefore my sense of self, in words and explore the nuances of my identity through creative nonfiction and fiction.
I have a distinct sense of style that is inseparable from my identity as a woman, as an artist, as a human drawn to beauty …

Zamzaroo, Zarang, And The Rabbit Men, Adan Mulvaney
Conspectus Borealis
This short fiction story is the tale of a grandfather, his rabbit, and his adopted granddaughter. This story was originally inspired when I heard the story of a suicidal rabbit. The rabbit never ran away from loud or scary noises. By ignoring his innate survival instincts, he was essentially inviting death. I found it intriguing how stagnancy can be a form of death. Though the story itself is fiction, some of the events that happened to the characters actually happened to people surrounding me. It is my hope that after reading this story, the reader can appreciate how peculiar and …
