The Rise And Fall Of Gilmore Girls' Feminist Legacy, Mckenna Ahlgren Oct 2018

The Rise And Fall Of Gilmore Girls' Feminist Legacy, Mckenna Ahlgren

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the feminist legacy that the television series Gilmore Girls (2000-2007, 2016) built during its original airtime and how its later revival diminished that legacy. Gilmore Girls’ main characters are three generations of women within the Gilmore family, providing a unique opportunity to analyze their feminist identities and characterizations relative to different iterations of feminism. This paper examines how the youngest Gilmore, Rory, is influenced by her mother’s and grandmother’s embodiments of feminism. Their expressions of femininity and sexuality, their approaches to motherhood, and their behaviors in their romantic relationships throughout the series correlate with the predominate feminism …

The World Of Women: Resources, Kellian Clink Jul 2018

The World Of Women: Resources, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

Women are absent from most standard encyclopedias in academic libraries such as the Europa World Year Book or the States’ Man Yearbook. To provide excellent service to our Gender and Women’s Studies scholars, librarians need to provide alternative sources of country information. Below are directories, country studies, and a listing of some significant websites with authoritative, timely, and substantial information about women around the world.

Some of the resources scoured to find these included the LibGuide: https://guides.library.oregonstate.edu/wgss280, the University of Wisconsin’s Women’s Knowledge Digital Library. In addition, intentional searching for websites and 30 years’ experience helping GWS scholars contributed to …

Morpho: Expectations & Mutations, Lynda Bostrom May 2018

Morpho: Expectations & Mutations, Lynda Bostrom

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Morpho: Expectations & Mutations is a written document accompanying the culmination of my three years painting at a graduate level. The result of which is an autobiographical body of work navigating the tension of being a human with an invisible disease, while straining to understand Western societal constructs of women. I simultaneously reject these fairy tales as a standard recipe for happiness, yet identify with its visual language that is rooted in the vernacular of my generation. Redefining the elements I reject or embrace helps me to look beyond the boundaries of these constructs, and adopt an attitude of curiosity …

Feminist Oral History Practice In An Era Of Digital Self-Representation, Margo Shea May 2018

Feminist Oral History Practice In An Era Of Digital Self-Representation, Margo Shea

Margo Shea

Beyond Women’s Words unites feminist scholars, artists, and community activists working with the stories of women and other historically marginalized subjects to address the contributions and challenges of doing feminist oral history.

Feminists who work with oral history methods want to tell stories that matter. They know, too, that the telling of those stories—the processes by which they are generated and recorded, and the different contexts in which they are shared and interpreted—also matters—a lot. Using Sherna Berger Gluckand Daphne Patai’s classic text, Women’s Words, as a platform to reflect on how feminisms, broadly defined, have influenced, and continue to …

Young Women In Chilean Politics: Political Participation Among Students At The University Of Viña Del Mar, Julia Ludovici May 2018

Young Women In Chilean Politics: Political Participation Among Students At The University Of Viña Del Mar, Julia Ludovici

Senior Honors Projects

Chilean women face inequality in political participation. There is a large gap in gender representation in Chilean politics, despite the election of a woman to the presidency—twice. Feminist theory has long been at play in Chilean academia, and my research builds upon some of the basic propositions of feminist theory: the patriarchy and oppression of women, and the double standards faced by women in their private vs. public lives. Michelle Bachelet’s presidency, along with the recent “quota law,” both provide historical and present-day context to the issues faced by women and their political participation. Based on the data collected by …
