Utilization Of Solar And Wind Power-Generation Systems In The Mining Industry: Recent Trends And Future Prospects, Elaheh Mohammadi Valikandi, Yosoon Choi

Journal of Sustainable Mining

In recent years, the mining industry has faced many challenges, such as rising demand, fluctuating energy prices, increasing energy consumption due to declining ore grades, and environmental concerns. According to the Paris Agreement, countries worldwide must focus on decarbonizing their economies to mitigate the global average surface temperature growth. This paper reviews how renewable energy, specifically photovoltaic and wind power systems, can be used to tackle some of these challenges. Operating mines globally, like the South Deep gold mine in South Africa and the MA'ADEN Alumina Refinery in Saudi Arabia, and abandoned mines, such as former coal mines in the …

The State Of The Carbon Capture And Sequestration Industry In California In 2024: Challenges And Policy Solutions, Noah Jackson Apr 2024

The State Of The Carbon Capture And Sequestration Industry In California In 2024: Challenges And Policy Solutions, Noah Jackson

School of Public Policy Capstones

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the process of capturing CO2 from an above ground carbon source, transporting it to a sequestration well, and permanently sinking it deep underground. Despite the state of California depending on CCS to reach carbon neutrality, not one CCS project is operational yet in the state. Due to the recent creation and expansion of state low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) credits and the federal 45Q credits, CCS projects are beginning to be developed. Between 2021 and 2023 twelve Class VI applications were submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in California.

Households' Preferences For Alternative Renewable Energy Technologies: An Attribute-Based Choice Experiment Survey In Metro Manila, Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan, Daniel Del Barrio Alvarez, Ruth S. Palanca, Nelson Matthew P. Tan, Gem B. Castillo, Dino Carlo A. Saplala, Nan Wang Jan 2024

Households' Preferences For Alternative Renewable Energy Technologies: An Attribute-Based Choice Experiment Survey In Metro Manila, Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan, Daniel Del Barrio Alvarez, Ruth S. Palanca, Nelson Matthew P. Tan, Gem B. Castillo, Dino Carlo A. Saplala, Nan Wang

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Using a choice-based conjoint analysis, we measured willingness to pay (WTP) for an increase in the share of specific Renewable Energy (RE) technologies, namely solar, wind, biomass, and small-scale hydropower. The study found that on average, Metro Manila (MM) households are WTP an additional 19.3% of their electricity bill for an additional 20% share of RE in electric power capacity that is sourced from solar power. The corresponding WTP for the other RE technologies are substantially lower - 11.9% for biomass, 10.5% for wind, and 9.8% for small-scale hydropower. The skewed preference for solar energy augurs well for the government's …

The Future Of Hydropower In Southeast Asia’S Renewable Energy Transition, Olivia Cairns Jan 2024

The Future Of Hydropower In Southeast Asia’S Renewable Energy Transition, Olivia Cairns

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis will examine the barriers to implementing hydropower in Southeast Asia and propose responsible solutions. This is necessary because Southeast Asia is not on track to reduce carbon emissions to meet climate change mitigation goals. Coal often outcompetes renewable energy sources as a means of addressing the growing demand for electricity. Many insist that the potential for solar and wind power expansion is high, but often ignore the key problems with these renewables at an industrial scale. Hydroelectric dams face rampant social opposition, mistrust due to policy failures, and a poor reputation for causing social and environmental harm. Yet, …

Performance Evaluation Of A Dual-Chamber Plant Microbial Fuel Cell Developed For Electricity Generation And Wastewater Treatment, Mahmood Golzarian, M. Ghiasvand, S. Shokri, M. Bahreini, Fatemeh Kazemi Jan 2024

Performance Evaluation Of A Dual-Chamber Plant Microbial Fuel Cell Developed For Electricity Generation And Wastewater Treatment, Mahmood Golzarian, M. Ghiasvand, S. Shokri, M. Bahreini, Fatemeh Kazemi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Plant microbial fuel cells (PMFC) have attracted great scholarly attention as a renewable energy source. These cells have three main components: anode, cathode chambers, and a proton exchange membrane. In this study, a dual-chamber plant microbial fuel cell system was designed using Cyperus papyrus and Shewanella oneidensis. The effects of various factors, including the size of the electrodes, the distance between the electrodes, and the inoculation volume of Shewanella oneidensis, on the ability of electricity generation, were scrutinized. The results indicated that increasing the size area of the electrodes from 2 × 2 to 4 × 4 and 6 × …
