A Summary Of Lake Mcconaughy Rainbow Trout Spawntaking Activities, Rod Van Velson Dec 1970

A Summary Of Lake Mcconaughy Rainbow Trout Spawntaking Activities, Rod Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The objective of this activity is to raise and stock progeny from adult Lake McConaughy rainbow trout for the purpose of: (1) establishing spawning runs of McConaughy strain rainbow trout in streams which have the potential to support reproduction, (2) develop a stocking program for streams which have a coldwater habitat but lack suitable spawning areas (these rainbow, upon reaching a size of seven to nine inches will migrate downstream to Lake McConaughy. They will return to the streams in their third and fourth years weighing 2.0 to 6.0 pounds), and (3) providing additional life history and management information about …

The Fishes Of The Nemaha Basin, Nebraska, Larry Witt Nov 1970

The Fishes Of The Nemaha Basin, Nebraska, Larry Witt

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The possible effects of proposed watershed management practices on fish resources of the Nemaha Basin were poorly understood; thus, a study was undertaken to ascertain the species of fish present and their relative abundance and distribution within the basin. Thirty-five species were collected, 34 of them from the Big Nemaha River system and 28 from the Little Nemaha River system. These data may be used as a basis for future studies of fish population changes in the Nemaha Basin and possibly as a basis for studies in other watersheds.

The Effects Of Channelization In The Missouri River On Fish And Fish-Food Organisms, Earl R. Kendle Nov 1970

The Effects Of Channelization In The Missouri River On Fish And Fish-Food Organisms, Earl R. Kendle

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Plans by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to channel the Missouri River from Sioux City to Yankton are of great concern to the ecologists interested in this section of the river. The channelization of the last remaining relatively natural sketch of the Missouri River below the main stem reservoirs could prove to be ecologically disastrous. As the present time too little is known in the form of scientifically proven facts of the likely effects on fish and other organisms inhabitating the river. The populations of certain species of fish far downstream from and in the section to be channelized …

Bioassay Procedures For Oil And Oil Dispersant Toxicity Evaluation, Gilles Laroche, Ronald Eisler, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Hazards to marine and estuarine fauna associated with offshore drilling of oil and with transport of large quantities of oils via tankers are numerous and understandable. At present, there is a growing body of evidence on adverse effects to these organisms of crude oil (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) and chemical oil counteracting agents or dispersants (5) (6) (9) (10) (11) (12) (13) (14) (15) (16) (17). These effects are well summarized by Smith (18) and by Carthy and Arthur (19).

Comparatively few workers have studied the influence of oil-dispersant mixtures of marine life. Studies by …

Digital Systems For On-Site Collection For Water Quality Analysis, M. K. Testerman Nov 1970

Digital Systems For On-Site Collection For Water Quality Analysis, M. K. Testerman

Technical Reports

A prototype system has been developed for recording and transmitting digital data at a remote water quality monitoring station in an unattended manner. As many as eight analog signals from transducers, which measure water quality characteristics such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, chlorides, conductivity, redox, and turbidity, are converted to digital signals and recorded in binary coded decimal format on magnetic tape. This unit may be contacted from a central station for playback of the day's recording. The transmitted data can be recorded at the central station by teletype. Each data record includes a time-of-day "word" so that all data …

Nebraska Trappers' Guide: A Handbook On The Taking Of Muskrat, Mink, Beaver, And Coyote And The Handling Of Pelts, Edson Fichter, George Hytrek Nov 1970

Nebraska Trappers' Guide: A Handbook On The Taking Of Muskrat, Mink, Beaver, And Coyote And The Handling Of Pelts, Edson Fichter, George Hytrek

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Management of any game or fur animal is an effort to insure an annual harvestable surplus. Much of this effort must be placed upon the land. The development and maintenance of habitat--the place where the animals can live--constitutes a large portion of this effort. The objective of habitat development is the increase and improvement of homes for wildlife and thereby the increase in numbers and improvement of the quality of the animals produced. Another important and continuous job of game management. is the annual check on populations--their ups and downs. Information on the numbers of animals is necessary if only …

Instrumentation And Development Of Techniques To Measure And Evaluate Meteorological Parameters Important To Hydrology, Duane G. Chadwick Nov 1970

Instrumentation And Development Of Techniques To Measure And Evaluate Meteorological Parameters Important To Hydrology, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

Hydro-meteorological instrumentation concepts are discussed. The necessity for an economic and reliable telemetering system is recognized and ways are shown how to achieve this objective. Particular discussion is given on total-precipitation and water-content-of-snow sensing. A method is also presented showing how to make isohyetal plots of telemetered precipitation information on an x-y plotter by use of a resistance paper method in conjunction with an analog computer.

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1970 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven

Reports

The Applied Biology Department in the VIMS Division of Applied Marine Science and Ocean Engineering conducts. weekly surveys of oyster "setting" in Virginia rivers from the end of May through early October each year. Starting at the mouth of each river and proceeding upstream to the limits of oyster setting, the collecting areas a.re established on public and private beds. Spat counts are obtained from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes. The number of spat which set in one week on the smooth side of ea.ch shell on the string are tabulated.

Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton Oct 1970

Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton

Reports

Social well-being is an accepted subset of water investment feasibility criteria. Our attempt is to isolate income redistribution impacts conferred by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projects. Four project sites have been utilized to yield both pre and post project estimates of farm income and wealth. Production functions of the Cobb-Douglas type were estimated to yield information about factor shares, and thus enable inferences to be made about distribution of total product. Lorenz curves were developed to show changes in distribution of wealth and net income in terms of family enterprise, per acre, and per irrigated acre. Listing of individual …

Algal Growth And Decomposition: Effects On Water Quality, Phase Ii, Edward G. Foree, Ronald L. Barrow Oct 1970

Algal Growth And Decomposition: Effects On Water Quality, Phase Ii, Edward G. Foree, Ronald L. Barrow

KWRRI Research Reports

The decomposition and associated nutrient regeneration of three unialgal cultures and one mixed culture containing an indigenous population of bacteria and microscopic animals were studied under dark, constant temperature laboratory conditions. After periods of nutrient-deficient growth ranging from O to 30 days, these cultures were inoculated with decomposer populations and subjected to anaerobic and aerobic environments for the decomposition studies. The extend of decomposition was determined from the percentage volatile suspended solids and percentage particulate COD remaining after 200 days of decomposition. The average extent of decomposition was greater for aerobic than for anaerobic conditions. However, significant portions of the …

Ornitrol: Recent Developments, M. R. Woulfe Sep 1970

Ornitrol: Recent Developments, M. R. Woulfe

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

This talk today will be on recent developments with Ornitrol. All the recent developments have been with blackbirds and grackles; and, unfortunately, the man who has done the most recent work is sitting right here, so I can't steal his data very well!

We have done some work since I spoke to you last on some of the pharmacol¬ogy of SC-12937--which is an axocholesterol the active ingredient of Ornitrol. One of these developments is the determination of the half-life of SC-12937, which is 28 days. This is the reason, we feel, for its prolonged activity in birds. It is stored …

Sampling Of Corn To Assess Bird Damage: A Preliminary Review Of A Comprehensive Study, Philip Granett, John T. Linehan Sep 1970

Sampling Of Corn To Assess Bird Damage: A Preliminary Review Of A Comprehensive Study, Philip Granett, John T. Linehan

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

"How large a sample is needed to survey the bird damage to corn in a county in Ohio or New Jersey or South Dakota?" Like those in the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife and the U.S.D.A. who have been faced with a question of this sort we found only meager information on which to base an answer, whether the problem related to a county in Ohio or to one in New Jersey, or elsewhere. Many sampling methods and rates of sampling did yield reliable estimates but the judgment was often intuitive or based on the reasonableness of the resulting …

Photoperiodic Control Of The Testicular Cycle In The Eastern Red-Winged Blackbird, (Agelaius Phoeniceus Phoeniceus), Joel T. Kerlan Sep 1970

Photoperiodic Control Of The Testicular Cycle In The Eastern Red-Winged Blackbird, (Agelaius Phoeniceus Phoeniceus), Joel T. Kerlan

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The annual testicular cycle of many avian species which reside in temperate zones can be divided into two stages: the recrudescent stage and the regressive stage. The recrudescent stage is characterized by an increase in testis size which reflects the transition from an aspermatogenic condition to a spermatogenic condition. At the end of the breeding season, the birds enter the regressive stage. During this period a marked decrease in testis weight and volume indicates the return to an aspermatogenic condition. This stage is maintained until the next spring when presumably the increasing photoperiod induces gonadal recrudescence. If the birds are …

Physiological Interpretations Of Morphological Variation In The Red-Winged Blackbird, Dennis M. Power Sep 1970

Physiological Interpretations Of Morphological Variation In The Red-Winged Blackbird, Dennis M. Power

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

A number of widespread species vary morphologically throughout their range. Ultimately such geographic variation appears to be adaptive and represents local evolutionary responses to the pressures of natural selection. Detailed knowledge of size, shape and color variation in species such as the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) may eventually allow the identification of breeding localities of autumn and winter flocks simply from morphological evidence. Knowledge of variation in behavioral and physiological parameters also will be useful in assessing the effect of various control devices.

The present study stems from an attempt to elucidate the adaptive significance of geographic variation of redwings …

Serum Calcium Levels Of The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Tim Burkholder Sep 1970

Serum Calcium Levels Of The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Tim Burkholder

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Serum calcium levels were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry during different stages of development of the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). The effects of the reproductive cycle, growth, and soil calcium on mean serum calcium levels in this species were analyzed as were the effects of mean serum calcium levels on eggshell thickness, hatchability, and egg production.

The Effects Of Ornitrol On Wild Populations Of Red-Winged Blackbirds And Grackles, Robert C. Fringer, Philip Granett Sep 1970

The Effects Of Ornitrol On Wild Populations Of Red-Winged Blackbirds And Grackles, Robert C. Fringer, Philip Granett

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

For the past three years the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, in coop¬eration with the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, has conducted field evaluations on the effects of reproductive suppressants on wild populations of red-winged blackbirds. These studies have been performed in conjunction with the North East 49 (a Federally sponsored regional project which presently has nine states in the North East and Ohio cooperating to develop means to combat bird damage to agricultural crops) regional project on control of bird depredations.

Field evaluations in 1968 and 1969 centered around the effects of TEM (tri-ethylene melamine) on the reproductive rates …

Red-Winged Blackbird Movements On Lake Erie Islands, Mildred Miskimen Sep 1970

Red-Winged Blackbird Movements On Lake Erie Islands, Mildred Miskimen

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

What I am going to say this afternoon is based entirely on field observations. As I said, this is a progress report. Maybe in another five or ten years I shall have enough data so that I can come back and show you something more detailed. The area with which we are dealing is the archipelago that runs across between Ottawa county, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. I have not done any work on Point Pelee, but I have worked on Pelee Island, on all of the U.S. islands, and along the North shore around Sandusky bay. What I am considering …

Studies On The Movements Of Blackbirds And Starlings In The West End Of Lake Erie, Maurice L. Giltz, Harold E. Burtt Sep 1970

Studies On The Movements Of Blackbirds And Starlings In The West End Of Lake Erie, Maurice L. Giltz, Harold E. Burtt

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The operation of decoy traps at The North Central Farm, Vickery, Ohio, the Ottawa-Crane Creek-McGee Marsh Area, and on the Bass Islands in Lake Erie, has permitted the banding of thousands of Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), Common Grackles (Quiscalus quiscala), Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater), and Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). The repeats and returns of these banded birds justify inferences concerning the sex and age ratios in the populations and the stability of the populations, as well as indicating the seasonal migrations and movements of the populations.
