Assessing Intra-Urban Particulate Matter (Pm2.5) Concentrations At The Lower Rio Grande Valley (Rgv), South Texas, Usa, Using Low-Cost Sensors, Esmeralda Mendez Aug 2022

Assessing Intra-Urban Particulate Matter (Pm2.5) Concentrations At The Lower Rio Grande Valley (Rgv), South Texas, Usa, Using Low-Cost Sensors, Esmeralda Mendez

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid technological developments of novel low-cost air quality sensors enable long-term ambient monitoring in neighborhood areas. In this study, spatial and temporal trends are analyzed by localized level monitoring with low-cost sensors (TSI BlueSky Air Quality Monitor). Eleven low-cost sensors were deployed across the Lower Rio Grande Valley, South Texas region: Brownsville, Edinburg, Weslaco, and Port Isabel. 24-hour PM2.5 concentrations are correlated with PM2.5 from existing Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Continuous Ambient Monitoring Stations (CAMSs) to express temporal and spatial heterogeneity from March 01, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Results indicated the deployed low-cost sensors as a better …

Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis) Behavior And Accelerometer Telemetry In The Bahia Grande Of Texas, Jonathan Truett Cawlfield Dec 2021

Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis) Behavior And Accelerometer Telemetry In The Bahia Grande Of Texas, Jonathan Truett Cawlfield

Theses and Dissertations

There has been very little study of the Texas population of snook. No studies have have looked at behavior in the Texas snook population. In this study we look at behavioral patterns and activity level in Lower Laguna Madre snook utilizing accelerometer telemetry tags. Twenty-one common snook were surgically implanted with tags and monitored from summer and fall of 2019 until September 2020. The accelerometer tags which sum acceleration over the x, y, and z planes calculated (ODBA) which was used to estimate behavior. This behavior was then compared with environmental data like diel period, tidal period, water temperature, and …

The Influence Of Human Disturbance On Wildlife Use Of A Highway In South Texas, Thomas J. Yamashita Jul 2020

The Influence Of Human Disturbance On Wildlife Use Of A Highway In South Texas, Thomas J. Yamashita

Theses and Dissertations

Roads can greatly impact wildlife. Wildlife vehicle collisions contribute to population declines while disturbance from human activity may prevent wildlife from using areas around roads. The construction of mitigation structures may lessen these effects through fine scale modification of animal use of roadside areas. In this thesis, how the construction of wildlife mitigation structures impacted the fine scale distribution of wildlife on State Highway 100 in Cameron County, Texas was examined. Spatial and temporal scale may also influence these relationships. The relationship between human activity and wildlife activity around the highway was explored and how the distribution of wildlife road …

Survival Of Off-Host Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) Annulatus (Acari: Ixodidae) Larvae In Study Arenas In Relation To Climatic Factors And Habitats In South Texas, Usa, Emily Jesselle Zamora May 2020

Survival Of Off-Host Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) Annulatus (Acari: Ixodidae) Larvae In Study Arenas In Relation To Climatic Factors And Habitats In South Texas, Usa, Emily Jesselle Zamora

Theses and Dissertations

The cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus (Say), is an economically destructive arthropod because of its ability to vector bovine babesiosis. Cattle fever ticks can spend more than 90% of their life cycle as questing larvae, but the effect of climatic factors on their off-host behavior and survival is unclear. The goal of this study was to measure the effects of specific ecological factors on off-host larvae in nature. The study was conducted in a south Texas pasture over a 20-mo period, during which time larval populations were surveyed and ambient weather variables - relative humidity and temperatures – were …

Characterizing Polychlorinated Biphenyl Degradation Potential In Surface Water Bacteria From Rio Grande Valley, Texas Reservoirs, Alisha M. Janiga Aug 2018

Characterizing Polychlorinated Biphenyl Degradation Potential In Surface Water Bacteria From Rio Grande Valley, Texas Reservoirs, Alisha M. Janiga

Theses and Dissertations

The Donna Reservoir in Donna, Texas is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution. This reviews the current understanding of PCBs and investigate the potential of PCB degradation by native bacteria communities in the Donna Reservoir. The metabolic diversity, biphenyl tolerance, bphA1 presence were tested on surface water samples from the Donna Reservoir. The Ecoplate data suggest that the communities have a diverse metabolic capacity and the degree of plant life may interact with carbon type metabolism but not the rate of growth. Biphenyl growth curves showed that all the samples from the Donna Reservoir are tolerant to the average PCB …

Development Of Lower Rio Grande River Water Quality Transportation Numerical Model For Bi-National River Management, Jose O. Gonzalez Aug 2017

Development Of Lower Rio Grande River Water Quality Transportation Numerical Model For Bi-National River Management, Jose O. Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, water quality modelling has focused on modelling individual water bodies. However, water quality management problems must be analyzed at the larger scale to include influences from various water bodies that are interconnected. This paper provides a study on the hydrologic and quality transportation calculation by developing a hydrodynamic (unsteady state) channel routing model using a water-balanced approach. A one dimension Lagrangian river model was developed and applied to the 210 plus miles for the lower Rio Grande River Basin from the Falcon Dam to the head water of Brownsville that pours onto the Gulf of Mexico. This model can …
