Consequences Of Environmental Manipulation On Behavioural And Neuromorphological Plasticity As It Relates To The Reintroduction Of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) To Lake Ontario, Ali I. Mokdad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reintroduction of imperilled species has become an important tool in conservation biology and relies on the captive-rearing of remaining individuals, or a subset thereof, as a lifeline to prevent extinction. The success of reintroduction efforts has generally been low, mainly due to poor post-release performance of captive-reared animals. Captive-breeding programs tend to produce behaviourally and neurologically compromised animals that deviate from wild phenotypes and are less fit in natural settings. While genetic adaptation can account for some of the behavioural deficiencies expressed by captive-reared animals, phenotypic plasticity has been shown to play a large role. Phenotypic plasticity is generally …

Multifaceted Environmental Enrichment In Industrial Fish Hatcheries: The Influence Of Enriched Rearing On The In-Situ Behaviour And Post-Stocking Success Of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Justine Elizabeth Mcandrews Oct 2021

Multifaceted Environmental Enrichment In Industrial Fish Hatcheries: The Influence Of Enriched Rearing On The In-Situ Behaviour And Post-Stocking Success Of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Justine Elizabeth Mcandrews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hatchery fish reared and stocked to sustain or restore wild populations often perform poorly in novel environments compared to their wild counterparts. To combat maladaptive hatchery-acquired traits environmental enrichment is an emerging tool used to provide ‘life skills training’ to hatchery fish prior to release. Through the application of simple yet multifaceted enrichment protocols in an industrial fish hatchery, this thesis aimed to demonstrate how enrichment could be applied to improve the ecological viability of stocked fish. At a provincially-run fish hatchery, a subgroup of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were subject to 10 weeks of environmental enrichment …

Getting Over The Dam: Overcoming Institutional Barriers To The Recovery Of Atlantic Salmon By Navigating The Social-Science/Policy Interface, Melissa E. Flye Dec 2019

Getting Over The Dam: Overcoming Institutional Barriers To The Recovery Of Atlantic Salmon By Navigating The Social-Science/Policy Interface, Melissa E. Flye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term governance has undergone somewhat of an evolution since its inception, originally describing the act of governing, it has come to represent a more collaborative form of governing which is distinct from hierarchical control models (Marin and Mayntz, 1991). Collaborative governance refers to the systems associated with public policy decision making and resource management which span the jurisdictional boundaries of public agencies, levels of government, and/or public and private spheres in order to pursue a public policy goal or outcome (Emerson et al., 2012). Environmental management is often considered an inherently collaborative effort, as ecological systems and species rarely …

Phenology And Effects Of Dams On The Success Of Atlantic Salmon Smolt Migrations In The Penobscot River, Maine, Daniel S. Stich Dec 2014

Phenology And Effects Of Dams On The Success Of Atlantic Salmon Smolt Migrations In The Penobscot River, Maine, Daniel S. Stich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar populations are diminished throughout their range and high marine mortality is among the drivers of the failure of many stocks to recover. A goal of salmon recovery is to maximize the number of juvenile ‘smolts’ entering the ocean to offset loss therein. Dam removals and changes to hydropower allocation in Maine’s largest river, the Penobscot River, have occurred as part of the Penobscot River Restoration Project (PRRP). These activities, in addition to stocking have the potential to influence the number of smolts reaching the ocean. Telemetry was used to investigate factors influencing initiation of migratory behavior, …
