Application Of Geophysical And Geochemical Techniques For The Assessment Of Groundwater Recharge From Wadi Al Bih Dams, Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Sager Al Asam Dec 1997

Application Of Geophysical And Geochemical Techniques For The Assessment Of Groundwater Recharge From Wadi Al Bih Dams, Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Sager Al Asam

Theses

Groundwater from Wadi AI Bih is still a major source of water required for irrigation, industry and domestic purposes in Ras AI Khaimah area, United Arab Emirates. Because of the continuous population growth, demand for pumping more water has created an imbalance in the groundwater resources of Wadi AI Bih basin, and the estimated discharge (11 million m3/year) has exceeded the calculated natural recharge (9 million m3/yr). To restore the balance between natural recharge and discharge and maintain a good-quality groundwater, the UAE government has built Wadi AI Bih dams in 1982.

The objectives of this …

Inhibitory Effect Of Carbamate On The Cell Division Of Rat Bone Marrow, Mariam Hamad Rashed Al-Dhaheri Dec 1997

Inhibitory Effect Of Carbamate On The Cell Division Of Rat Bone Marrow, Mariam Hamad Rashed Al-Dhaheri

Theses

The cytotoxic effect of methomyl carbamate was studied in three groups (control group, 1 % treated group and 10% treated group) and each group contain 2-3 White Wistar rats. The 1% treated group was received 1 % of methomyl LD50, while the 10% treated group was received 10% of methomyl LD50. The administration was orally and repeated three times with 24 hr intervals time. The effect of methomyl was investigated in four experimental run, by analysing the change in cell count in bone marrow after methomyl treatment. It was found that methomyl treatment caused significant reduction …

Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari Dec 1997

Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari

Theses

Arabian Gulf countries, witnessed rapid development in many aspects of life. Although these

developments have improved the quality of life in the UAE, they have drawbacks that generated

health problems and environmental hazards. One of the consequences of rapid development is the

usage of large amounts of pesticides in agricultural production for the sake of increasing the yield of crops. However, the expanded use of these pesticides is known to result in acute respiratory symptoms and changes in body metabolism. To-date, no population-based study has been conducted to investigate the effects of pesticides on plasma amino acids and liver enzyme …

Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Re-Injecting Oil-Field Water Into The Miocene Clastic Sediments On The Shallow Aquifer In The Bu Hasa Oil Field, United Arab Emirates, Khalid Ali Al Amari Jun 1997

Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Re-Injecting Oil-Field Water Into The Miocene Clastic Sediments On The Shallow Aquifer In The Bu Hasa Oil Field, United Arab Emirates, Khalid Ali Al Amari

Theses

The Bu Hasa oil field is located about 200 km southwest of Abu Dhabi City in the U.A.E. Oil production from the field started in 1965 and a water injection program was initiated in 1970. This research is focused on the assessment of the environmental hazards to the Quaternary Liwa aquifer from either the re-injection of oil-field water into the Miocene Clastic aquifer or surface dumping into unlined pits.

Well logs, core samples, structure and isopach contour maps, stratigraphic cross sections, and water chemistry analyses were utilized in this study. Moreover, a detailed hydrogeological aquifer assessment was conducted and a …

Study On The Parasites Of Falcons In The United Arab Emirates, Mohammad Ismail M. A Sultan Al-Ulama May 1997

Study On The Parasites Of Falcons In The United Arab Emirates, Mohammad Ismail M. A Sultan Al-Ulama

Theses

Sakers Falco cherrug, Gyrfalcons Falco rusticolus, Peregrines Falco peregrilllls, in addition to Hybrids (saker X gyrfalcon, or gyrfalcon X peregrine), were found to be the most popular species of falcons in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The importance of falcons and falconry in Arabia was highlighted with a brief history of falconry in Arabia.

The study focused on the prevalence of intestinal parasites (coccidia, helminthes and nematodes) and blood parasites (Haemoproteus sp. and Leucocytozoon sp.) as well as ecto-parasites (Ticks and Mites) of these falcons, with discussion on the possible sources of infection in view of the …

An Assessment Of The Prevalence Of Trichomonas Sp. In The Domestic Pigeon (Columba Livia) Population, In The Emirates Of Abu Dhabi And Dubai, Theresa Caroline Bailey Jan 1997

An Assessment Of The Prevalence Of Trichomonas Sp. In The Domestic Pigeon (Columba Livia) Population, In The Emirates Of Abu Dhabi And Dubai, Theresa Caroline Bailey

Theses

A survey of 250 captive (animal market) and free-flying (trapped at a sheep farm) pigeons was conducted to assess the prevalence of Trichomonas sp. in the domestic pigeon (Columba livia) population, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oropharyngeal swabs demonstrated that 52% of all pigeons were found with Trichomonas sp. in their oropharynx, of which 60%, 68% and 35% of pigeons were Trichomonas sp. positive in the AI Ain and Abu Dhabi animal markets and AI Ain sheep farm respectively. Captive birds had a significantly higher infection rate than the free-flying pigeons. Inspection of the oropharynx of live pigeons positive …

Evaluation Of Groundwater Quality In Shallow Aquifers Under Cultivated Lands At Al Oha Area, United Arab Emirates, Waleed Nasser Ahmed Bin Braik Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Groundwater Quality In Shallow Aquifers Under Cultivated Lands At Al Oha Area, United Arab Emirates, Waleed Nasser Ahmed Bin Braik

Theses

To assess the impact of application of chemical fertilizers in agriculture on the Quaternary aquifer at AI Oha area, United Arab Emirates, 76 groundwater samples were collected during February 1995 - March 1996. Samples were analyzed for major, minor and trace chemical constituents in the Food Control Laboratory, Abu Dhabi.

The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of collected samples varied between 500 milligrams per liter (mg/l) in the east and 3,500 mg/l in the west. Except for bicarbonate ion (HC03-), concentration of major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+) and anions (CO32- …

Effect Of Oil Pollution On Juvenile And Adult Rabbitfish (Siganus Canaliculatus), Mohammed Abdul Rahim Hassan Al Zarouni Jan 1997

Effect Of Oil Pollution On Juvenile And Adult Rabbitfish (Siganus Canaliculatus), Mohammed Abdul Rahim Hassan Al Zarouni

Theses

The possible toxic effect of crude oil and dispersant on the reproduction and performance of common marine fish in the United Arab Emirates coasts were investigated. Adult female and juvenile rabbitfish (Siganus canaliculatus) were exposed to different concentration of Sharjah light crude oil (0, 4, 6 ml crude oil/l) in the presence or absence of 0.3 mI/l Nalfleet dispersant (Maxi-Clean 2) dissolved in sea water. Juvenile fish were exposed to treatments for 3, 6, 9 or 15 days and adult female were treated for 18 days. At the end of each experimental period histopathological changes in the skin, gills, liver …
