Hydrocarbon Levels In Tampa Bay Final Report, Larry J. Doyle, Edward S. Van Vleet, William M. Sackett, Norman J. Blake, Gregg R. Brooks
Reports
The primary purpose of this project was to establish and characterize, as far as possible, hydrocarbon base levels for the Tampa Bay Estuary. In addition, we were to characterize 1) hydrocarbon molecular compositions, 2) the isotopic composition of total and lipid sediment organic carbon, and 3) evaluate the potential for utilizing isotopic analyses to quantify and determine the extent of future oil spills.

Enallagma aspersum and E. traviatum (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) are the most abundant larval odonates in Bays Mountain Park (Sullivan County, Tennessee, USA), although their spatial distributions are essentially nonoverlapping. E. traviatum coexists with insectivorous fish in a small lake, whereas E. aspersum is restricted to a small fishless pond nearby. Behavioral observations revealed that E. aspersum larvae were more active than E. traviatum, and tended to occupy more conspicuous positions. E. aspersum also engaged in more confrontations than E. traviatum, especially at higher density. In laboratorye xperimentsw ith juvenile bluegills( Lepomism acrochirusa) s predators,E . aspersum larvae were more vulnerable to …
Investigation Of Pollution In A Karst Aquifer Utilizing Optical Brightener, John Thrailkill, Ralph F. Wiseman, Bridget R. Scanlon
Investigation Of Pollution In A Karst Aquifer Utilizing Optical Brightener, John Thrailkill, Ralph F. Wiseman, Bridget R. Scanlon
KWRRI Research Reports
Optical brightener is an additive to laundry detergents and is found contaminating groundwater. Its concentration may rapidly and inexpensively be determined by fluorescence techniques, and because its source is human wastewater, its presence in groundwater serves as a direct indication of pollution from septic tanks, sewer leaks, and landfills.
A total of 105 wells and springs in an area within the Inner Bluegrass Karst Region near Lexington, Kentucky, were described and sampled. Analyses were made for optical brightener (430 samples), total coliform (91), fecal coliform (93), and fecal streptococci (90). As many as 20 optical brightener and 4 bacterial samples …
A Water Quality Element For The Extension Of The Salt Ponds Special Area Management Plan To Quonochontaug, Winnapaug (Brightmans) And Maschaug Ponds, Clarkson A. Collins
A Water Quality Element For The Extension Of The Salt Ponds Special Area Management Plan To Quonochontaug, Winnapaug (Brightmans) And Maschaug Ponds, Clarkson A. Collins
Theses and Major Papers
The Salt Ponds Project scientific research and management efforts were designed to address the management issues typical to barrier beach-lagoon systems. It was anticipated that the finds of the project would be applied to the management of similar estuarine systems in Rhode Island and elsewhere. This paper presents findsings and recommendations relating to water quality and land use for the watersheds of Quonochontaug Pond, Winnapaug Pond, and Maschaug Ponds. With the inclusion of these waterbodies into the SAM Plan framework, all of the barrier beach-coastal lagoon ecosystems of the south shore will come under a plan specifically designed to protect …
Hillsborough Bay Macroalgae Study Final Report, Mangrove Systems, Inc.
Hillsborough Bay Macroalgae Study Final Report, Mangrove Systems, Inc.
Reports
Hillsborough Bay. the northeastern portion of the Tampa Bay estuarine system (Fig. 1) has long suffered from the problems caused by industry and urbanization (Simon 1974). The macroalgal community of this estuary has been identified as a source of nuisance odor problems for many years. A study by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration (FWPCA 1969) indicated that these problems resulted from degraded water quality (primarily eutrophication) which led to large populations of one or two species of marine red algae (Gracilaria spp.). Seasonal freshwater input resulted in the death and decay of these quantities of algae, producing the odor …

Present And Historical Environmental Survey Of The Poquoson River, York County, Virginia And The Warwick River; Newport News, Virginia : With Special Reference To Biotic Communities And The Effects Of Alum Discharge, Robert J. Diaz, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Gene M. Silberhorn, Gary F. Anderson
Reports
The objectives of this study were:
1. to determine the areal extent of discharged materials within each of the rivers using the aluminum:silicon ratio as an indicator;
2. to evaluate the benthic invertebrate communities within each of the rivers;
3. to determine whether there are differences in the productivity of the benthic algal and planktonic communities which can be attributed to the discharge of alum sludge in each river;
4. to evaluate the condition of the marsh communities in each river near the filtration plant;
5. to review historical biological data for the Poquoson and Warwick Rivers and to relate …
Laverkin Springs, Utah On-Site Pretreatment And Desalting Processes Evaluations, R. J. Eisenhauer, Bureau Of Reclamation
Laverkin Springs, Utah On-Site Pretreatment And Desalting Processes Evaluations, R. J. Eisenhauer, Bureau Of Reclamation
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
During December 1979 through August 1980, pilot plants and laboratory facilities were operated at the LaVerkin Springs, Utah site to characterize the water and to evaluate various pretreatment processes and desalting processes. The pretreatment processes studied included aeration-precipitation, lime treatment, lime-soda ash treatment, and lime-ion exchange treatment. Desalting at 80 and 90 percent water recovery levels was studied with both electrodialysis and high pressure reverse osmosis process equipment. Also, a "spiractor" was evaluated at the site as a lime-soda ash reactor and as a calcium sulfate desupersaturator. Data and results obtained from the test program will be used for feasibility …
Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For years superphosphate has been the cheapest, convenient and most effective way of supplying phosphorus to newly cleared soils in Western Australia's South-West that are acutely deficient in phosphorus. However its effectiveness as a phosphorus source falls markedly after application. Regular applications are needed to maintaine profitable pastures and crops on these soils.
After a big jump in supperphosphate prices in the mid 970s, researchers tested the use of Australian rock phosphates as potentially cheaper alternative phosphorus fertilisers to superphosphate. On the none-leaching sands, as this article shows, none of the rock phosphates was as effective for plant growth as …

Evaluation Of The U. S. Army Corps Of Engineers' Decision-Making Process For Selection Of Dredged Material Disposal Sites, Brian P. Thompson
Theses and Major Papers
This study evaluates the decision-making process of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) as it applies to the selection of land or open-water disposal sites for sediment from dredging projects planned by the COE. The study seeks to illustrate: 1) the structure of the COE decision-making process as provided for in laws, regulations, and COE policies; 2) the operational, economic, and environmental variables that might influence COE decision-making; 3) how the New England Division of the COE makes decisions on disposal sites for dredged material through consideration of operational, economic and environmental objectives. The study finds that the COE …
