Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Calls Tolkien’s fiction highly “audience-centered,” inviting divergent interpretations of everything from the appearance of hobbits to the landscape; through the technique of leaving room for imagination, Tolkien is “demanding that his readers participate with him in the creative process.”

Jamaica Novel Has Ring Of Truth. The Harder They Come By Michael Thelwell (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance
Jamaica Novel Has Ring Of Truth. The Harder They Come By Michael Thelwell (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
In a recent interview, Michael Thelwell told of being present at a Caribbean Day celebration in New York attended by countless people with "a nostalgia for their country" and of his resultant resolve to give Jamaicans and their children something to read about themselves. In "The Harder They Come," Thelwell has more than achieved his goal, for the novel does not merely offer a bit of nostalgia for homesick Jamaicans; it is also a thrilling introduction to a culture and a people for the outsider.
A Kierkegaardian Reading Of Three Novels By Faulkner, Francine Marilyn Hall
A Kierkegaardian Reading Of Three Novels By Faulkner, Francine Marilyn Hall
Master's Theses
William Faulkner and S¢ren Kierkegaard, although separated in time by almost a century, possess a common concern: both are deeply interested in the numerous ways in which individuals live out their lives in either hope or despair. Exploring the avenues which might alleviate this despair and providing a basis for hope are tasks both authors have accepted as theirs.
This paper relates three novels by Faulkner to the stages of existence set forth by Kierkegaard in much of his philosophical writing. I intend to show that Faulk ner's characters serve as illustrations of different ways in which an individual may …

Timon Of Athens: The Iconography Of False Friendship, Clifford Davidson
Timon Of Athens: The Iconography Of False Friendship, Clifford Davidson
English Faculty Publications
The realization that iconographic tableaux appear at central points in the drama of Shakespeare no longer seems to involve a radical critical perspective. Thus a recent study is able to show convincingly that the playwright presented audiences with a Hamlet who upon his first appearance on stage illustrated what the Renaissance would certainly have recognized as the melancholic contemplative personality. As I have noted in a previous article, the hero of Macbeth when he sees the bloody dagger before him is in fact perceiving the image which most clearly denotes tragedy itself; in the emblem books, the dagger is indeed …
Providence & Free Will In The History Of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Steven Smith
Providence & Free Will In The History Of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Steven Smith
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The three books J.R.R. Tolkien has written about his imaginary world of Middle-earth, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, have a common element. In all thre& books, he presents the characters and their adventures within an historical framework which he has structured according to the four principles of Christian history: periodization, universality, apocalypse, and providence. While this historical perspective serves to give his fantasized world "an inner consistence of reality," it also frames one of the main themes of his stories: the relationship between Divine Providence and free will in a world containing good …

Notes that Williams uses many elements of the traditional ghost story in Descent Into Hell, especially in the story of the suicide. However, Williams “touches [the ghost story] with the numinous, giving its symbols a sacramental meaning.”
