Abstract Gods Among Men is a creative text that functions critically to dissect the genre of superhero fiction and bring forth critiques of our culture of worshipping celebrities and political figures. I cite Woody Evans’ work in my critical introduction as being central to my project. Evans puts forth the idea that superheroes are inherently conservative because they are reactive agents that do not proactively change anything. They instead maintain the status quo. The horror genre is a broad umbrella under which a number of subgenres and subcategories fall. Skin and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction stories which take on the horror genre. These stories serve to explore, test, and defy the conventions of the horror genre, making use of its tropes and traditions in some instances, abandoning and rejecting them in others. The stories in this collection connect to a number of horror subgenres, including body horror and environmental horror, in an attempt to define and exemplify these categorizations. As a society we have developed a hierarchical distinction that we apply to fiction, defining some of it as superior (literature), and some of it as inferior (popular fiction). While this distinction undeniably exists, it resides in our social consciousness, and is not a delineation that is supported by demonstrable differences in the properties of the texts themselves. Rather, it serves to inflect our readings and interpretations of the texts dependent upon their categorization. This story is about Sam and Oran, who are two lower class people entering adulthood and gaining fiscal independence by working as cashiers at a large store. They are struggling to accept their respective childhoods and trying to make peace with the way people are or at least appear to be. They cope with the difficulties of their loneliness, limited resources and troublesome interactions with various meditative activities.
