The Regional English Of The Former Inhabitants Of Cades Cove In The Great Smoky Mountains, M. Jean Jones Aug 1973

The Regional English Of The Former Inhabitants Of Cades Cove In The Great Smoky Mountains, M. Jean Jones

Doctoral Dissertations

Cades Cove is the largest pastoral region in the Great Smoky Mountains. Surrounded on all sides by formidable ridges, the Cove remained isolated from the outside world for over a century. Inhabitated by a rugged group of settlers who came from farther north in the early nineteenth century, the Cove was home for a thriving and homogeneous culture until the 1940's, when the last residents were forced to leave in order that the National Park be established.

Two significant factors influenced the undertaking of this investigation of Cades Cove Regional English: first, the absence of comprehensive, accurate, and comparable linguistic …

Patterns Of The Negative Epic Quest And Three Modern Novels By Andre Gide, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, And Malcolm Lowry, John Robert Greer Aug 1973

Patterns Of The Negative Epic Quest And Three Modern Novels By Andre Gide, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, And Malcolm Lowry, John Robert Greer

Master's Theses

Many critics have approached the subject of modern epic, but like E. M. W. Tillyard, they dismiss "eccentric" literature from consideration on the claim that the execution of epic requires "balance" and "objectivity." It seems unfortunate to dismiss works that--while remaining essentially negativistic and subjective in their impact-uniquely capture the spirit of their milieu and refract in a singular way a "choric" effect (to borrow Tillyard's term); that is, "the unconscious metaphysic of a group." To accommodate the inverted comparison between epic and certain individuated works by modern authors, I here attempt to define a form I call the "negative …

Sherwood Anderson, Christopher Sergel, And Winesburg, Ohio, Frank Stoddert Johns Aug 1973

Sherwood Anderson, Christopher Sergel, And Winesburg, Ohio, Frank Stoddert Johns

Master's Theses

In 1936, Sherwood Anderson read a stage version of Winesburg, Ohio to his friends Roger and Christopher Sergel. For Anderson the play marked the culmination of his efforts at playwriting. He had adapted his finest collection of stories for the stage, and it would now be the responsibility of the theatre and particularly of his producer, Jasper Deeter, to see that the play succeeded. Deeter produced the play at the Hedgerow Theatre in 1937. Anderson had no doubts concerning the merits of his play.

For Christopher Sergel, however, Sherwood Anderson's reading was only a beginning. Anderson's masterpiece, he felt, had …

A Comparison Of Jane Austen's Early And Late Characterization, Janet R. Moore Aug 1973

A Comparison Of Jane Austen's Early And Late Characterization, Janet R. Moore

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to compare an early well-developed heroine, Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, with a late well-developed heroine, Anne Elliot in Persuasion, in Jane Austen's novels to see if there are any changes in characterization and techniques of characterization and to evaluate these techniques.

In Chapter One, I have shown that throughout the nineteenth century from the time of publication, critics commented on Jane Austen's ability to create realistic characters. Not until the twentieth century, however, was Jane Austen's work evaluated critically. Twentieth century critics agree that she was a master at character …

Three Studies In Characterization, Diana A. Kohler Aug 1973

Three Studies In Characterization, Diana A. Kohler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

THE WOMEN OF BEN JONSON IN EPICOENE AND BARTHOLOMEW FAIR. This paper compares and contrasts the method variations that cause the women of Epicoene to be less interesting and more stereotyped than those of Bartholomew Fair.

Basically, in the women of Epicoene, Jonson used character types exclusively. The women were all "masculine," and remained that type throughout the play. In Bartholomew Fair, Jonson created versatility in the characters by including more information on the women through rhetorical "places," particularly the consilium or reason behind their actions. The multiplied places in the women in Bartholomew Fair, the changes in the …

The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore Aug 1973

The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore

Masters Theses

Chapter I: Introduction

As human beings, when we cannot see clearly into the workings of life, we call it ambiguous--and rightly so. Judgment of our own behavior and that of others is always suspect. We have a tendency to label this person as "good" or that act as "evil," but there should always be a certain amount of uncertainty as to whether or not our perceptions and our ensuing judgments are correct. Those of us who are literature have also, by habit, come to look at literature as reflecting the same standards of right and wrong, of good and evil. …

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno Jun 1973

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of my thesis to trace the evolution of Steinbeck's view, in his non-fiction of what the conflict between good and evil consists, along with the development of this concern, and its related stylistic influence, on his fiction, in order to show that Steinbeck's major concern was for man's relationship to this conflict.

I was alerted to the existence of an evolution in view in Steinbeck by the chance reading of his last novel, The Winter of Our Discontent, in juxtaposition with several early novels. In order best to follow this change, then, I read all …

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass May 1973

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass

Senior Scholar Papers

The thirty poems collected here were written durin 1972-197. They begin as rather imagistic pieces, but the imagist tendencies are tempered with a preoccupation with the process of emotion. The poems progress through a middle period of finding a poetic voice by combining elements of other styles with the stylistic tendencies that rise out of myself. The subject matter is deliberately varied. The poems emerge, in the last few pieces, as the beginnings of a voice which combines a preoccupation with man in the unity of the world, the state of natural world and the nature of its retaliation for …

Characters As Functions Of Landscape In Seven Poems By Lawrence Durrell, Richard King Leroy May 1973

Characters As Functions Of Landscape In Seven Poems By Lawrence Durrell, Richard King Leroy

Master's Theses

No single theory explaining the creative process has won the assent of writers and critics. Most scholars agree that the process has sub-conscious origins and that it concludes only when the last revisions reveal the entire finished composition. However, the act of creation is de- pendent upon numerous aesthetic factors, and artists have given credit to various stimuli which have produced their special inspiration.

An Interpretation Of Ecstasy As Found In The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson, Thomas B. Mccary May 1973

An Interpretation Of Ecstasy As Found In The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson, Thomas B. Mccary

Master's Theses

Emily Dickinson was indeed used to grief, as the record of her life clearly indicates. She was disappointed in love and and disappointed in her efforts to achieve literary fame. Yet there was moments of happiness and even ecstasy in Emily Dickinson's life. The purpose of this thesis is to examine those moments of ecstatic elevation--the "Soul's Superior instants" as Emily called them--in order to achieve a better insight into the mind of the poet and the nature of often curious verse.

An examination of ecstasy requires a study of Emily's religious background her psychological make-up. It also behooves the …

An Orientation Of The Theoretical Aspects Of Verbs In English, Mostafa Hedayatnia Apr 1973

An Orientation Of The Theoretical Aspects Of Verbs In English, Mostafa Hedayatnia

Master's Theses

Traditional grammar originated in Greece in the fifth century B.C. and has been closely connected with philosophy and literary criticism ever since. Through the course of centuries, numerous grammars have been presented, with new ideas and definitions each "varying greatly in purpose, quality, basic assumption, and method of analysis." Each system of grammar has been productive in its own way as well as erroneous and has been succeeded by other systems still faulty. Consequently, in spite of the tremendous amount of theoretical data processed by investigators and experts, neither an explicit nor a complete grammar of a language has ever …

"Mercy Seasons Justice", Robert Freeman Davidson Apr 1973

"Mercy Seasons Justice", Robert Freeman Davidson

Master's Theses

This is a study of the development of the mind of William Shakespeare as it relates to justice which tries to show how certain of Shakespeare's beliefs and theories, those shared by most of his con temporaries, were altered in the course of that development. The plays chosen for this treatment of the mind of Shakespeare -- the historically related cycle of Richard II, Henry IV (I and II), Henry V, Henry VI (I, II, and III), and Richard III -- show the ideas in question in greater abundance than any other of Shakespeare's plays. The historical grouping consists …

Sir Thomas Wyatt And The Struggle Of The "Weried Mynde", Susan Eichenfeld Ashton Jan 1973

Sir Thomas Wyatt And The Struggle Of The "Weried Mynde", Susan Eichenfeld Ashton

Dissertations

When the poetry of Sir Thomas Wyatt has attracted critical attention at all, it has been both praised and blamed for a variety of reasons, often the wrong reasons. Wyatt's role in the historical development of English verse, as the poet who introduced such forms as the sonnet, the rondeau, and terza-rima into English poetry, has been emphasized, while the originality and innovativeness of his poetry have been largely neglected,
