Anti-Romantic Attitudes In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Mildred T. Faris Aug 1936

Anti-Romantic Attitudes In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Mildred T. Faris

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the anti-romantic attitudes of Jane Austen. Her novels are realistic, almost wholly free of the element of Romanticism which claimed so large a part of the literature of the period (late eighteenth and early nineteenth century). It is obvious at the first casual reading of Jane Austen that, although she lived during the period of the great Romantic movement and was writing Northanger Abbey at the same time that Wordsworth was writing "Preface to the Lyrical Ballads," there is no suggestion that she knew or cared to know the impulse that …

English Language and Literature ETDs

John Galsworthy said of his novels that they were "a criticism of life." This definition is generally recognized and has been accepted by critics as an approach to the study of his works. English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis is a study of the metrical practices, sources of imagery, and philosophy of life of Robert Frost.

The metrical tables have been compiled after a careful study of 1811 lines of Frost's blank verse. Ten of what are commonly considered among his best poems in blank verse were used as a basis for the study. The metrical findings in the …

English Homilies And English Miracle Plays, Anthony J. Achee

English Language and Literature ETDs

Acquaintance with a few finely poetic passages in the homilies of Aelfric led me to suspect that perhaps our ancient homiletic literature was worthy of more attention than it seemed to have received at the hands of scholars. Consequently, when the opportunity for producing an original study presented itself, the field was waiting for me; that of the early English homilies.

The metrical tables have been compiled after a careful study of 1811 lines of Frost's blank verse. Ten of what are commonly considered among his best poems in blank verse were used as a basis for the study. The metrical findings in the blank verse of each of the five books of the author's poetry have also been tabulated. A final table …
