Henry James: Seeing A Life Through Biography, Letters, And Fiction, Pierre A. Walker Oct 2004

Henry James: Seeing A Life Through Biography, Letters, And Fiction, Pierre A. Walker

Pierre Walker

Film directors, opera composers, playwrights, and choreographers have long been drawn to adapting Henry James's fiction. In recent decades, fiction writers from Carlos Fuentes to Joyce Carol Oates to Hilary Bailey to Alan Hollinghurst have reset such stories of James's as The Aspern Papers, The Turn of the Screw, and "The Pupil." But this year, Colm Tóibín, in The Master, and David Lodge, in Author, Author, have both taken the unusual step of making Henry James the central character in full-length psychological novels. Partly because of the coincidence of these two authors' working simultaneously on similar projects, but also because …

Frankenstein Meets Lacan: Desire And Discourse In Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", Laura Hamblin Dec 2003

Frankenstein Meets Lacan: Desire And Discourse In Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", Laura Hamblin

Laura Hamblin

This presentation looks at Frankenstein's creature and his predicament by analyzing three manifestations of the creature: the creature as demon; the creature as the Other; and the creature as the Shadow. In each of these instances, language and the lack of fulfillment of desire function as the medium through which the creature becomes a monster.

Write First: Putting Writing Before Reading Is An Effective Approach To Teaching And Learning, Peter Elbow Dec 2003

Write First: Putting Writing Before Reading Is An Effective Approach To Teaching And Learning, Peter Elbow

Peter Elbow

The phrase “reading and writing” reflects the implicit assumption that reading comes first and that writing must follow. First graders can “write” all the words they can say, albeit in their own manner and using invented spelling. Encouraging this kind of writing gives children control over letters and texts, giving them an understanding that they need ultimately for reading. The word learning itself tends to promote reading over writing because we often assume learning refers to input, not output, that it’s a matter of putting other people’s ideas inside us. Writing is more caught up with meaning making, however, and …

The Original Placement Of The Hereford Mappa Mundi, Daniel Terkla Dec 2003

The Original Placement Of The Hereford Mappa Mundi, Daniel Terkla

Daniel Terkla

Although antiquarians, historians of cartography, palaeographers and art historians have written about the Hereford mappa mundi for more than three hundred years, we know little about its original placement or use. This paper relies on new masonry and endrochronological evidence and the system of medieval ecclesiastical preferments to argue that this monumental world map was originally exhibited in 1287 next to the first shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe in Hereford Cathedral’s north transept. It did not function as an altarpiece, therefore, but as part of what I call the Cantilupe pilgrimage complex, a conglomeration of items and images which was …
