Financial Partnering And Other Strategies To Help Centers Of Teaching And Learning Thrive In Hard Times, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, B. Philips

With Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) entering a period of economic downturn, the authors demonstrate how their Center has survived hard times through financial partnering with on- and off-campus groups. They also explain how to develop successful strategies for partnering (both financial and otherwise), analyze the dynamics of such collaborations, and offer some useful guidelines.

"Can No Prayers Pierce Thee?": Re-Imagining Marian Intercession In The Merchant Of Venice, Ruben Espinosa

In post-Reformation England, anti-Catholic polemics delineated Marian devotion as dangerous, if not idolatrous, and attacked the Virgin Mary’s influence by contending that belief in her intercessory power posed a threat to God’s authority. But the very existence of these polemics indicates that prayer to, and desire for, the Virgin Mary’s intercession endured the Reformation. This article addresses Shakespeare’s attention to this Marian strength in The Merchant of Venice to demonstrate how he draws on Mary’s “lost” intercessory power in his development of Portia as a character reminiscent of the compassionate Virgin Mary of Catholic tradition. The Spanish Tragedy As Intertext For Orhan Pamuk's Kar (Snow), Rachel Hile

In Kar (2002; English version Snow, 2004), Orhan Pamuk uses the genre of early modern English revenge tragedy, specifically Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, to emphasize the theme of revenge and to illuminate his ideas about women's agency within Islamic culture. Through his departures from the generic expectations of revenge tragedy, Pamuk conveys a sense of the moral complexity of the many acts of revenge in the novel. In another important alteration of this intertext, during the play-within-the-novel performance of The Spanish Tragedy, Kadife, who plays the Bel-imperia role, goes “off script” by not committing suicide on …
