Emerging Technologies And Advanced Analyses For Non-Invasive Near-Surface Site Characterization, Aser Abbas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This dissertation introduces novel techniques for estimating the soil small-strain shear modulus (Gmax) and damping ratio (D), crucial for modeling soil behavior in various geotechnical engineering problems. For Gmax estimation, a machine learning approach is proposed, capable of generating two-dimensional (2D) images of the subsurface shear wave velocity, which is directly related to Gmax. The dissertation also presents a method for estimating frequency dependent attenuation coefficients from ambient vibrations collected using 2D arrays of seismic sensors deployed across the ground surface. These attenuation coefficients can then be used in an inversion process …

The rheology of drilling fluid, which characterizes its flow and deformation, is vital for transporting and suspending rock cuttings as well as for enhancing the drilling rate. Precise control of drilling fluid rheological parameters is essential to ensure borehole cleanliness and efficient drilling. This paper proposes an intelligent identification method for drilling fluid rheological parameters based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The method employs magnetic stirring to generate stable images of drilling fluid flow, uses various data augmentation methods to increase the number of images and create a database, thereby enhancing the model’s robustness and generalization capabilities. This research utilizes advanced machine learning techniques to evaluate node vul-
nerability in power grid networks. Utilizing the SciGRID and GridKit datasets, con-
sisting of 479, 16,167 nodes and 765, 20,539 edges respectively, the study employs
K-nearest neighbor and median imputation methods to address missing data. Cen-
trality metrics are integrated into a single comprehensive score for assessing node
criticality, categorizing nodes into four centrality levels informative of vulnerability.
This categorization informs the use of traditional machine learning (including XG-
Boost, SVM, Multilayer Perceptron) and Graph Neural Networks in the analysis.
The study not only benchmarks the capabilities of these …

Techniques To Overcome Energy Storage Limitations In Electric Vehicles, Matthew J. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, battery limitations (cost, size, and weight) complicate electric vehicle adoption. While important research on battery development is ongoing, this dissertation discusses two main approaches to overcome those limitations within the existing battery technology paradigm. Those thrusts are: improving battery health through an optimal charging strategy and minimizing necessary battery size through dynamic wireless power transfer. In this dissertation, relevant literature is discussed, with opportunities for further development considered. Within the two thrusts, three objectives sharpen the focus of the research presented here. First, a planning tool is defined for a battery electric bus fleet. …

Quantitative volumetric assessment of filamentous actin (F-actin) fibers remains challenging due to their interconnected nature, leading researchers to utilize threshold-based or qualitative measurement methods with poor reproducibility. Herein, a novel machine learning-based methodology is introduced for accurate quantification and reconstruction of nuclei-associated F-actin. Utilizing a convolutional neural network (CNN), actin filaments and nuclei from 3D confocal microscopy images are segmented and then each fiber is reconstructed by connecting intersecting contours on cross-sectional slices. This allows measurement of the total number of actin filaments and individual actin filament length and volume in a reproducible fashion. Focusing on the role of F-actin …

An Investigation Of Information Structures In Dna, Joel Mohrmann
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The information-containing nature of the DNA molecule has been long known and observed. One technique for quantifying the relationships existing within the information contained in DNA sequences is an entity from information theory known as the average mutual information (AMI) profile. This investigation sought to use principally the AMI profile along with a few other metrics to explore the structure of the information contained in DNA sequences.
Treating DNA sequences as an information source, several computational methods were employed to model their information structure. Maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimators were used to predict missing bases in DNA sequences. …
Next-Generation Crop Monitoring Technologies: Case Studies About Edge Image Processing For Crop Monitoring And Soil Water Property Modeling Via Above-Ground Sensors, Nipuna Chamara
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly in the past two decades. Internet of Things (IoT) technology has advanced rapidly during the last decade. Merging these two technologies has immense potential in several industries, including agriculture.
We have identified several research gaps in utilizing IoT technology in agriculture. One problem was the digital divide between rural, unconnected, or limited connected areas and urban areas for utilizing images for decision-making, which has advanced with the growth of AI. Another area for improvement was the farmers' demotivation to use in-situ soil moisture sensors for irrigation decision-making due to inherited installation difficulties. As Nebraska …

Mineral Matter Behavior During The Combustion Of Biomass And Coal Blends And Its Effect On Particulate Matter Emission, Ash Deposition, And Sulfur Dioxide Emission, Rajarshi Roy
Theses and Dissertations
Combustion of coal is one of the primary sources of electricity generation worldwide today. Coal contains different chemicals that cause particulate matter(PM) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. These are health hazards and are responsible for deteriorating the ambient air quality. Particulate matter also forms ash deposits inside the coal combustor, which in turn decreases the energy efficiency of the power plants. Using biomass as a fuel in these utility boilers can potentially reduce the problems of particulate matter emissions and ash deposition, and can significantly reduce the SO2 emissions. However, biomass needs to be pretreated to make its properties similar …

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a nonspecific and persistent ailment that entails many physiological, psychological, social, and economic consequences for individuals and societies. Although there is a plethora of treatments available to treat CLBP, each treatment has varying efficacy for different patients, and it is currently unknown how to best link patients to their ideal treatment. However, it is known that biopsychosocial influences associated with CLBP affect the way that we move. It has been hypothesized that identifying phenotypes of spinal motion could facilitate an objective and repeatable method of determining the optimal treatment for each patient. The objective …

This study numerically investigated the reaction behaviours of catalytic ozone decomposition reaction in a 10.2-meter-tall gas-solids circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactor. A pseudo-homogeneous reactive transport model for ozone decomposition, integrated with the two-fluid model, was developed and validated using experimental data. Based on the model, the impacts of turbulence models, specularity coefficients, and simulation methods on reaction behaviours in the CFB riser reactor were explored. These three factors were found to significantly affect the hydrodynamic characteristics and the reaction behaviours in the riser. A comparative study of CFB riser and downer reactors was conducted. Operations in the direction of and …

Asteroid detection is a common field in astronomy for planetary defense, requiring observations from survey telescopes to detect and classify different objects. The amount of data collected each night is continually increasing as new and better-designed telescopes begin collecting information each year. This amount of data is quickly becoming unmanageable, and researchers are looking for ways to better process this data. The most feasible current solution is to implement computer algorithms to automatically detect these sources and then use machine learning to create a more efficient and accurate method of classification. Implementation of such methods has previously focused on larger …

Customer attrition in the banking industry occurs when consumers quit using the goods and services offered by the bank for some time and, after that, end their connection with the bank. Therefore, customer retention is essential in today’s extremely competitive banking market. Additionally, having a solid customer base helps attract new consumers by fostering confidence and a referral from a current clientele. These factors make reducing client attrition a crucial step that banks must pursue. In our research, we aim to examine bank data and forecast which users will most likely discontinue using the bank’s services and become paying customers. …
