Development And Verification Of A Laboratory Model For Use In The Study Of A Continuous Flow Pressurized Activated Sludge Process, Wayne Frederick Nolte Dec 1979

Development And Verification Of A Laboratory Model For Use In The Study Of A Continuous Flow Pressurized Activated Sludge Process, Wayne Frederick Nolte

Dissertations

Investigations concerning the responses of domestic wastewater treated at elevated pressures have demonstrated an acceleration in the rate of biological assimilation of the waste material. The literature is not extensive, but presents much conflicting data. There has been a lack of a coherent approach to the investigation of pressure in wastewater treatment. This demonstrates the need for standard testing apparatus and procedures.

A bench scale pressurized activated sludge process was designed and constructed. The apparatus was tested over a broad range of conditions and was found to give reproducible results. Kinetic responses of the pressurized process are presented.

Use Of Thermal Storage For Load Management In A Solar-Augmented Heat Pump System, James Thomas Schmitz Dec 1979

Use Of Thermal Storage For Load Management In A Solar-Augmented Heat Pump System, James Thomas Schmitz

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Electric utilities are today faced with the dilemma of satisfying increasing demands for electrical energy while their ability to build new power plants is being severely curtailed primarily due to environmental concerns. By redistributing the power demand of individual customers (and thus the utility) with respect to time, greater overall electricity consumption can be met without increasing the generating capacity of the utility. This redistribution can be accomplished using thermal energy storage at the customer’s location. For heating and cooling of buildings, thermal storage, combined with off-peak period operation of the mechanical system's major electricity consuming equipment, can lower peak …

The Compatibility Of Mild Carbon Steel And Water In A Heat Pipe Application, David D. Kenney Dec 1979

The Compatibility Of Mild Carbon Steel And Water In A Heat Pipe Application, David D. Kenney

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The phenomena that govern the performance and affect the lifetime of heat pipes are reviewed. The phenomena include the corrosion of metals by aqueous solutions, the diffusion of gases through metals, and the effects of hydrogen on metals. Heat pipes of 1015 C.D. carbon steel were fabricated and operated with a control group of 304 stainless steel heat pipes over the temperature range from 140° to 300° C. Results indicate that carbon steel/water heat pipes perform as well or better than 304 stainless steel/water heat pipes over the temperature range covered in this test.

State Estimation Using Parallel Extended Kalman Filters Of Nonlinear Measurements, Thomas Carlyle Sheives Dec 1979

State Estimation Using Parallel Extended Kalman Filters Of Nonlinear Measurements, Thomas Carlyle Sheives

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The extended Kalman filter applied to state estimation using nonlinear measurements has demonstrated divergence in many applications involving large initial uncertainties because of "invalid" linearizations performed by the filter on the nonlinear measurement functions. No quantitative results can be found as to how invalid these linearizations must be before divergence occurs. This report attempts to fill this void by deriving the extended Kalman filter as an approximate nonlinear least squares estimator, through the minimization of a measurement squared error function. The convergence of the extended Kalman filter is then determined by examining the squared error function and verifying the usefulness …

Lee's Moment Method Applied To Binary Flow In Jet And Channel Devices Used For The Aerodynamic Separation Of Uranium Isotopes, Edward Eugene Holcomb Dec 1979

Lee's Moment Method Applied To Binary Flow In Jet And Channel Devices Used For The Aerodynamic Separation Of Uranium Isotopes, Edward Eugene Holcomb

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Lees' moment method is applied to the problem of compressible, binary flow of uranium hexafluoride gas through a parallel plate channel. The time-dependent numerical problem is solved to yield the steady state solution. The results obtained are preliminary to the solution of the flow field for the curved nozzle and colliding jet devices used in the aerodynamic separation of uranium isotopes. Lees' concept of two-sidedness of the distribution function doubles the number of variables required to describe the system, and the resulting set of moment equations is not easily solved. The assumptions of isothermal, hydrodynamically fully developed flow are made …

Theory And Design Of Cyclotron-Wave Traveling-Wave Amplifiers, Arthur H. Gottfried Oct 1979

Theory And Design Of Cyclotron-Wave Traveling-Wave Amplifiers, Arthur H. Gottfried

Dissertations

A theory and design procedure for traveling-wave tubes using cyclotron-wave interactions is developed. An analysis is presented of the energy exchange mechanism and the axial beam velocity spread induced by the r.f. interactions. The analysis of the energy spread in a realistic model of the beam with nonzero size and nonzero space-charge density shows that higher maximum efficiencies at higher power is attainable (with collector depression) in cyclotron-wave amplifiers than in synchronous-wave amplifiers.

A one-watt, and a ten-watt cyclotron-wave amplifier at 3 GHz, utilizing bifilar helix circuits, scaled from a 2 kW, 5 GHz design, were constructed. A computer was …

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro Oct 1979

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro

Theses

The relative adsorption capacities of seven toxic, volatile organic air pollutants of either proven or suspected carcinogenic potential were tested on various adsorbents. Tests were run at flow velocities similar to those set in field sampling. This allows for extrapolation of test results to actual ambient air sampling systems. Experimentation was performed using a gas chromatograph (G.C.) equipped with a flame ionization detector. Sample introduction was carried out using the "displacement method" where the sample is introduced to the adsorbent cartridge as a plug.

Incipient elution volumes (VN), normalized for bulk adsorbent packing volume, were obtained at various …

Optical Fiber Dispersion Characterization, Alan Edward Geeslin Oct 1979

Optical Fiber Dispersion Characterization, Alan Edward Geeslin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the dispersion of optical pulses in fiber waveguides. Procedures for determining the transfer function of an optical fiber using either time domain measurements or frequency domain measurements are given. A test set is described which uses time domain measurements for dispersion characterization. Complex transfer function data are presented for various fiber lengths as well as optical connectors. Prediction of bandwidths of long fibers from bandwidth/measurements taken on shorter length fibers is discussed. A relation between the bandwidth of cascaded connectors in terms of the bandwidth of a single connector is obtained.
