We present a novel paper-polymer hybrid construct for the simple automation of fundamental microfluidic operations in a lab-on-a-disc platform. The novel design, we term a paper siphon, consists of chromatographic paper strips embedded along a siphon microchannel. The paper siphon relies on two main interplaying forces to create unique valving and liquid-sampling methods in centrifugal microfluidics. At sufficiently low speeds, the inherent wicking of the paper overcomes the rotationally induced centrifugal force to drive liquids towards inwards positions of the disc. The glass-like vortex distribution in pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7 − x thin films is observed by scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy and analysed for ordering after cooling in magnetic fields significantly smaller than the Earth's field. Autocorrelation calculations on this distribution show a weak short-range positional order, while Delaunay triangulation shows a near-complete lack of orientational order. The distribution of these vortices is finally characterised as an isotropic vortex glass. Abnormally closely spaced groups of vortices, which are statistically unlikely to occur, are observed above a threshold magnetic field. The origin of these groups …

Vapour phase polymerisation (vpp) of PEDOT to incorporate high levels of a sulphonated manganese porphyrin yields a vivid green conducting polymer that, under illumination, catalyzes selective oxidation of water from seawater from ca. 0.40 V (vs. NHE; Pt counter electrode) without observable chlorine formation. This onset potential is comparable to that of certain metal oxide semiconductors that achieve higher photocurrents but are not capable of selectively oxidising the water in seawater.

The feasibility of using Tandem Gas Metal Arc Welding (T-GMAW) to produce full penetration butt welds in 5mm ship panel steel plates has been assessed and compared to the current Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) process. Experiments conducted show that the T-GMAW process is feasible and demonstrated a significant improvement over the SAW process in several areas including higher travel speed, a reduction in filler material, significantly lower post weld distortion, and a smaller Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), while maintaining similar microstructure and mechanical properties in the weld metal and HAZ.

The effects of boron doping on the itinerant-electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition and the magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) in the cubic NaZn13-type La0.8Gd0.2Fe11.4Si1.6 compound have been investigated. The Curie temperature, TC, of La0.8Gd0.2Fe11.4Si1.6Bx compounds with x=0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.2 and 0.3 was found to increase from 200 K to 222 K with increase in boron doping, x. The maximum values of the isothermal magnetic entropy change, ΔSM, (derived using the Maxwell relation for a field change ΔB=0-5 T) in La0.8Gd0.2Fe11.4Si1.6Bx with x=0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.2 and 0.3 are 14.8, 16, 15, 7.5 and 6.6 J kg−1 K−1 respectively, with corresponding values of …

Different types of superconductors have been investigated at small magnetic fields (Ba) over wide temperature (T) ranges at different Ba orientations. It has been shown that the temperature dependence of the characteristic field (B*), separating the Ba-independent critical current density (Jc) plateau (single vortex pinning regime) and the region with Jc(Ba) (collective pinning), can be attributed either to the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth for Nb-film and MgB2bulk superconductors, or to thermally activated processes for Bi-based superconductors and YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting films. Yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) film was synthesized by a metal-organic deposition (MOD) process with fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor. The precursor solution with Sm addition enabled further improvement of the thickness and uniformity of precursor films. The calcination and firing processes were studied, and the precursor film was successfully converted to dense and uniform YBCO film on LaAlO3 (LAO) substrate after annealing in a wet Ar and O2 atmosphere. The measured critical current density (J c) value was about 80 A/cm-w (2.66 MA/cm2). The trifluoroacetate (TFA) reduced MOD process has the advantage that it has a larger tolerance for …

Successful synthesis and investigation of a new material that uses copper-metal–organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) as the template for loading LiBH4 are reported. The nanoconfinement of LiBH4 in the pores of Cu-MOFs results in an interaction between LiBH4 and Cu2+ ions, enabling the LiBH4@Cu- MOFs system to achieve a much lower dehydrogenation temperature than pristine LiBH4.

MgB2 samples were prepared by using 96% boron (B) powder with strong crystalline phase that had been ball milled for various times. We observed samples that contained ball-milled 96% B in comparison with one made from as-supplied commercial 96% B, with the results showing a significant enhancement in the high field critical current density (Jc) due to small grain size and better reactivity. Specifically, many grain boundaries for MgB2 could be acting as strong flux pinning centers. Based on Rowell connectivity analysis, when the ball-milling time increased, the connectivity factor, described as the active cross-sectional area fraction (AF), was decreased. …

Based on a model appropriate for “marginally type-II” superconducting system, we study the dynamics of vortices with competing interactions by Langevin dynamics simulation. In addition to pinned states and plastic flow, we find that the moving vortex system forms ordered bubble configurations and stripe structures, depending on pinning strength and driving force. The vortex system exhibits a marked hysteresis in its velocity-force characteristic, which results from a dynamical stripe reordering due to intervortex attraction.

The structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of the manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 have been studied. Change in the giant magnetic entropy was observed without any noticeable magnetic hysteresis but with small thermal hysteresis losses. We observed a first order magnetic phase transition around 251 K. The magnetic entropy change observed in this work is estimated to be 5.27 J/kg K for field changes from 0 to 1.5 T based on magnetization measurements. This value is about twice as large as those for other perovskite manganites and is even larger than for Gd-based magnetic materials at low fields. In addition, the entropy change …

Acidity generated from the oxidation of pyrite and other sulphidic compounds that exist at shallow depths in acid sulphate soils (ASS) presents a challenging environmental problem in coastal Australia. The generated acidic groundwater can adversely impact coastal ecosystems, aquaculture and agriculture. Groundwater manipulation using weirs and modified floodgates in creeks and flood mitigation drains in ASS-affected farmland, which has been practiced for over a decade for preventing pyrite oxidation, is not effective in low-lying floodplains due to the high risk of flooding. The issue of ensuring that growing communities in small island countries have access to safe water and adequate sanitation is examined in Kiribati, whose islands are spread over three million square kilometres in the central Pacific. Positron emission mammography ("PEM") is a breast imaging modality that typically involves the administration of relatively high doses of radiotracer. In order to reduce tracer costs and consider PEM for global screening applications, it would be helpful to reduce the required amount of administered radiotracer so that patient dose would be comparable to conventional x-ray mammograms. We performed GATE Monte Carlo investigations of several possible camera configurations. An experimental program was instigated to investigate boundaries in low-velocity slug-flow pneumatic conveying. Two straight horizontal pipelines of L = 21 m were set up for actual conveying trials using two different wall materials, stainless steel and aluminium. Observations of the pneumatic conveying tests were used in determining the location of boundaries and verifying the theoretical predictions.
