Mixture Models With Grouping Structure: Retail Analytics Applications, Haidar Almohri

Wayne State University Dissertations

Growing competitiveness and increasing availability of data is generating tremendous interest in data-driven analytics across industries. In the retail sector, stores need targeted guidance to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of individual stores based on their specific location, demographics, and environment. We propose an effective data-driven framework for internal benchmarking that can lead to targeted guidance for individual stores. In particular, we propose an objective method for segmenting stores using a model-based clustering technique that accounts for similarity in store performance dynamics. It relies on effective Finite Mixture of Regression (FMR) techniques for carrying out the model-based clustering with …

Modular Product Architecture’S Decisions Support For Remanufacturing-Product Service System Synergy, Johnson Adebayo Fadeyi Jan 2018

Modular Product Architecture’S Decisions Support For Remanufacturing-Product Service System Synergy, Johnson Adebayo Fadeyi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Remanufacturing is identified as the most viable product end-of-life (EOL) management strategy. However, about 80% of manufactured products currently end up as wastes. Besides other benefits, the product service system (PSS) could curtail the main bottlenecks to remanufacturing namely quantity, quality, recovery time of used product, and negative perception of remanufactured products. Therefore, the integration of PSS and remanufacturing has been increasingly recommended as an enhanced product offering. However, an integration that is informed by mathematical analysis is missing. Meanwhile, the variables that bolster the performance of PSS and remanufacturing are substantially influenced by product development (PD) decisions. Among the …

Integration of algae cultivation with wastewater treatment has received increasing interest as a cost-effective strategy for biofuel production. However, there has been no full assessment of algal biofuel production with wastewater on macro-scale by taking into account wastewater resources, land availability, CO2 emission resources, and geographic variation. This research addressed and evaluated the use of wastewater for algae cultivation, in terms of modeling and laboratory experiments. The first goal of this research was to develop a spatially explicit lifecycle model, by integrating life cycle assessment (LCA), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, for the evaluation of the environmental and economic …

Reliability Analysis By Considering Steel Physical Properties, Wujun Si Jan 2018

Reliability Analysis By Considering Steel Physical Properties, Wujun Si

Wayne State University Dissertations

Most customers today are pursuing engineering materials (e.g., steel) that not only can achieve their expected functions but also are highly reliable. As a result, reliability analysis of materials has been receiving increasing attention over the past few decades. Most existing studies in the reliability engineering field focus on developing model-based and data-driven approaches to analyze material reliability based on material failure data such as lifetime data and degradation data, without considering effects of material physical properties. Ignoring such effects may result in a biased estimation of material reliability, which in turn could incur higher operation or maintenance costs.

Engineering Hyaluronic Acid Carbon Nanotube Nanofibers: A Peripheral Nerve Interface To Electrically Stimulate Regeneration, Elisabeth M. Steel

Wayne State University Dissertations

Peripheral nerve injuries annually affect hundreds of thousands of people globally. Current treatments like the gold standard autograft and commercially available nerve guide conduits (NGC) are insufficient to repair long gap peripheral nerve injuries. NGCs can aid recovery but lack key microenvironment cues that promote nerve regeneration. We hypothesized that providing topographical, mechanical, and electrical guidance cues through a nanofibrous composite biopolymer would result in improved neuron growth metrics using an in vitro model. We embedded hydrophilic carbon nanotubes (CNT) within hyaluronic acid (HA) nanofibers by electrospinning. The aims of this study were (1) to define the topographical, nanomechanical, and …

Study Of Mri Signal In The Presence Of Discrete Spherical Magnetic Particles, Paul Kokeny Jan 2018

Study Of Mri Signal In The Presence Of Discrete Spherical Magnetic Particles, Paul Kokeny

Wayne State University Dissertations

Simulating signal behavior in Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) is often a necessary step in being able to understand how signal relates to certain physiological parameters. One such parameter of interest in the body is magnetic susceptibility since it is related to iron content. The bulk magnetic susceptibility of an object is a property that describes how magnetized it becomes when placed in an external magnetic field. When the bulk susceptibility of an object arises from the presence of discrete magnetic inclusions, the MRI phase signal inside the object can no longer be determined analytically by assuming it has a continuous …

Analysis Of Micromixers To Minimize Scaling Effects On Reverse Osmosis Membranes, Jeremy Walker

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

ANALYSIS OF MICROMIXERS TO MINIMIZE SCALING EFFECTS ON REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANES

by

Jeremy Walker

December 2018

Advisor: Dr. Shawn McElmurry

Major: Civil Engineering

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Structural elements, typically mesh spacers, are required between membrane leaves in spiral

wound elements to ensure flow through reverse osmosis (RO) modules. The standard diamond-shaped

mesh spacer results in non-ideal hydrodynamics that can lead to fouling, which ultimately reduces the

flux of water through the membrane and the operational life of the unit. Additionally, traditional mesh

feed spacers do not allow for reverse flow cleaning due to obstructed flow paths and, once …

Detectability Of Fuzzy Discrete Event Systems, Ahmed Mekki

Wayne State University Dissertations

Dynamic systems that can be modeled in terms of discrete states and a synchronous events are known as discrete event systems (DES). A DES is defined in terms of states, events, transition dynamics, and initial state. Knowing the system’s state is crucial in many applications for certain actions (events) to be taken. A DES system is considered a fuzzy discrete event system (FDES) if its states and events are vague in nature; for such systems, the system can be in more than one state at the same time with different degrees of possibility (membership). In this research we introduce a …

Enhancing Set-Based Design To Engineer Resilience For Long-Lived Systems, Gregory Hartman Jan 2018

Enhancing Set-Based Design To Engineer Resilience For Long-Lived Systems, Gregory Hartman

Wayne State University Dissertations

At the heart of Set-Based Design is the concept that down-select decisions are deferred until sufficient information is available to make a decision, i.e., a set of possible solutions is maintained. Due to the extended service lives of many of our current and future systems, the horizon for accurately predicting the system’s requirement is shorter than the service life, so the needed information to down-select to a single optimized solution is unavailable at the time of fielding. Set-Based Design can, however, be extended to explicitly carry a set of possible solutions past the point of the initial fielding of the …
