Seismic Performance-Based Design Of Bridges With Quantitative Local Performance Criteria, M Neaz Sheikh, Frederic Legeron Jan 2010

Seismic Performance-Based Design Of Bridges With Quantitative Local Performance Criteria, M Neaz Sheikh, Frederic Legeron

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Performance based design of bridges for earthquake resistance is still not explicitly used in design. However, most codes specify a level of performance for bridges under various earthquake inputs. In principle, design rules suggested in the code should meet stipulated performance criteria. However, it has been highlighted in the past that design rules are not directly related with stipulated performance criteria. After the presentation of performance criteria and their relation with post-earthquake functional requirements, the article examines the case of the Canadian Bridge Design Code (CAN/CSA-S6-06). Performance of bridges designed with this code is predicted and compared to expected levels. …

Significant research efforts have been devoted in recent years to the development of displacement-based seismic assessment and design methodology, recognising the shortcomings of traditional, code-specified force-based procedures. Recent advances in direct displacement-based seismic design of columns rely on the estimates of yield curvature for determining seismic design forces to satisfy the specified seismic performance levels. This paper presents simple expressions for estimating the effective yield curvature for normal- and high-strength circular reinforced concrete columns based on moment–curvature analyses of a large number of column sections. Such expressions can be programmed into spreadsheet format and can be used for the direct …

The research presented here is an attempt to use a very basic, low cost and non-specialized microcontroller for image processing tasks. The applications emanating from such an attempt will result in inexpensive face detection, intelligent motion sensors to low cost vehicle counting systems. We have been able to develop a system based on Microchip dsPIC microcontroller that implements edge detection of still images. Hardware-based signal processors such as Texas Instrument DSP (Digital Signal Processing) or Field Gate Arrays (FPGA) are generally an expensive solution for image processing applications. On the other hand a conventional 8-bit microcontroller doesn’t have enough capability …

New Policies Create A New Politics: Issues Of Institutional Design In Climate Change Policy, Henry Ergas Jan 2010

New Policies Create A New Politics: Issues Of Institutional Design In Climate Change Policy, Henry Ergas

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Institutional design focuses on the task of providing accountability and effective monitoring of decision-making by bodies vested with the coercive powers of the state in a context where information is inherently limited, costly to acquire and asymmetrically distributed. This paper focuses on issues of institutional design in the context of climate change policy. It examines proposals advanced in the June 2008 Draft and Final Reports of the Garnaut Climate Change Review (‘Garnaut Reports’), and in the Government’s July 2008 Green Paper and December 2008 White Paper on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (‘Green and White Papers’) with respect to how …

A typical Australian 3–5 Mt/year longwall requires 9 to 15 km of roadway to be developed every year (G. Lewis and G. Gibson: Proc. 13th Austr. Tunnelling Conf., Melbourne, Australia, May 2008, ATS, 317–326.). One of the major challenges faced by the Australian longwall mining industry is that roadway development has been unable to keep pace with improvements in longwall extraction rates. This has affected the profitability, viability and future of underground coal mines (M. Kelly: 'Coordination of roadway development strategy', ACARP report no. C5013, ACARP, Brisbane, Australia, 1997.). Gibson (G. Gibson: 'Australian roadway development– current practices', ACARP report no. …
