Flood-irrigation is primarily a system of irrigation which utilizes a part or all of the surface run-off is diverted from contributing watersheds and distributed over the fields by dikes or ditches. Diversion is accomplished through the use of a dam or of dikes if the volume of water diverted is not too great. There are thousands upon thousands of fertile acres throughout the arid and semi-arid regions of the Great Plains which could be materially benefited if bolstered by a little additional rainfall.
